Quartz vs. Granite Countertops: An Easy Guide to Understanding the Difference

- Hello! Steve here, and welcome to another video from Granite & Marble Specialties on quartz vs. granite countertops. Quartz is a manmade material, roughly 93% ground quartz with the remainder being epoxies, binders, fillers, and colors. This makes quartz a very strong material that doesn't need to be sealed as it's nonporous and stain resistant. Quartz is appropriate for more modern kitchens, especially with the wide range of monochromatic quartz available from Granite and Marble Specialties. Finally, quartz seams perfectly, making it perfect for large, complicated countertop designs or blending with other materials.
Granite, on the other hand, comes directly from the Earth - we cut every slab to fit the project. You'll also find that you can get much larger sheets of granite than quartz. This can make a big difference in your project, especially considering whether it will be completed using one slab or two. Due to the large slab size, many of our customers prefer granite over quartz for large kitchen islands.
One big difference between quartz and granite is burning. While granite can withstand heat from a hot pan for a few minutes, quartz can burn under the same stress. Fortunately, Granite & Marble Specialties can simply buff out any damage (including chips from falling objects) on site.

What a lovely interesting video, we are going granite splashbacks (a feature wall) and were originally going for quartz worktops but now going with granite for that too, templating done, fix is next week, nervous yet excited about it!

Thanks for the great comparisons! I'd smack anyone upside the head that put a hot pan directly on ANY countertop though.... Use a cork trivet or something else to protect your countertop if you have to put a pan on it, or move it to a cool, empty burner.
Chibi Muffin, I totally agree, unfortunately, with kids, they don't watch what they're doing. You can tell them constantly & they'll still "forget" and do it ugg! I'm scared out of my mind that one time forgetting & it's ruined. :(

I install granite countertops everyday. And quartz... this man is on point. To me quartz is somewhat plain.. granite has all great (sometimes not) colors.

learn about that expensive garnet kitchen tops . what my neighbor did..1. split wine -stain it..she had to pay extra $$$ for contractor to come back and put on a sealer ? 2. the color.. dark parts of the rock..she had mice droppings -MICE - poop and could not see it .
LOL,those stone is indeed beautiful, but it take more in maintenance,but is hse can offor it then,it should not be a problem for her,but still, its previous protection is done not good enough.

don't burn. does require resealing over a period of year., comparing to quazts. That don't Burn nor stain, and scratch. granite is more expensive.
Granite starts much cheaper than quartz and end much higher than quartz. Far broader price range.
quartz is actually not all good as not stain, scratch, it still need good quality level quartz to reach, not any manmade quartz

depends which species you choose. rarity, complexity, and crystal size are factors that determine cost.
If it looks amazing, it's probably more expensive than quartz.
Don’t forget, Quartz contracts and expands with temperature. Granite does not.. Quartz can with stand heat no higher than 200 degrees. Granite can withstand heat up to 1200 degrees...

Some clarifications:
The oft repeated 93% is weight, not content.
Tenax makes a sealer for engineered stone. I wonder why.
Since each engineered stone manufacturer uses a slightly
different formula, invisible repairs are IMPOSSIBLE.
Granite, Marble and Quartzites are repairable.
A good granite sealer lasts years and years, unless
you are selling sealers.
If you pick a dolomite or quartzite, they can't be sealed.
Same for Soapstone. Sits on top, won't go in.
Trying to heal a few of the 'truth chasms'.
I'm a bit confused: "...quartzite, they can't be sealed." vs "Tenax makes a sealer for engineered stone. I wonder why."

what is granite sealing? he said it needed to be done annually.
it's basically a chemical that you spread onto the stone. it penetrates the stone and hardens, filling the pores

Do I need to use rods around sink cut out of 2cm quartz? I know that granite can break in half just carrying it to install.

Great Video. To the point. Question though..which is better for OCEANFRONT HOUSE...in terms of longeivity and durability? Lots of sea and salt erosion.
Quartz will fade if exposed to sunlight, I.e. underneath windows and skylights. Granite will not, and I have worked for fabricators who keep their stone outside. I have 5 years experience with granite and quartz countertops. Most cemetery headstones are granite for this reason.

Wrong. Ive worked with Quartz and Granite everyday for the last 5 years. Quartz will stain just as easy as as granite. Quartz is good if your looking for a marble look with durability, but granite holds up just as well if not better. Remember,granite is a natural stone, and each granite has its own characteristics, in example, a scratch on absolute black granite shows up much more than on a white torronchino granite. And please, do not get quartz just because you do not have to seal it. DuPont sells a sealer that lasts up to 15 years, and I am sure that a granite company in your area offers a clean and seal service. I hope this comment helps guide your decision making, as I hope that you choose a slab that you absolutely love. Stone countertops are a great addition to a home and most of the people who work in the industry love what they do.

I agree to some extend, my friend.quartz is actually not all as good as their saying, just ads and promotion words, but mostly quartz is more stain resistance than granite, but quartz no need maintenance?forget about it, just less need than granite if good quality(many bad quartz now, and they are even easily stain than granite)

Your the only one who missed the point of the video. It wasn't a video about your selection choices for granite or quartz...it was a video explaining the difference.

Sooo..this is my dilemma. We redid our kitchen about 5-6 yrs ago & got granite counter tops. I love the granite, as far as durability, but because we were working on a budget (still are) we had to do things piece by piece & now the granite that I still love, as it is, does not go as well with our cabinets, it just all looks odd together. So we decided to redo our kitchen & do quartz this time. Problem is, I want an all white kitchen, which means white quartz. My fear, with quartz period, is the heat factor. Let's face it, those kitchens you see in pictures HA, that's not a normal working, KID-friendly kitchen. My kids are grown but STILL mess things up & ding things the same way they did when they were like 5! My question, I'm set on an all white kitchen, granite does not come in white, because of it's naturalness, it can vary big time, so I haven't really found a granite that's both white enough & costs less than a diamond necklace to get per sq ft. But I'm afraid of the 1st time one of my kiddos, not thinking, puts a hot pan on my new quartz, it'll be ruined for good. What's the odds of that happening? Should I keep looking for that white granite or go for the quartz based on that? If it does get burnt, is it permanent or is there something that can fix it & what? This is truly hard!
Susan it’s fixable but it probably won’t come out as perfect as it was originally, quarts is a lot harder to fix then granite is, and there are white granite slabs out there, I wouldn’t give up on granite
Go for G5 marble its an artificial ..taughest of all, mirror finished shine for lifetime, scratch less stain less material n no sealant require
Most quartz company's have up to 15 years warranty where most granite has no warranty at all

We had a quartz counter installed. And my mom would do a lot of cutting. There are so many scratches. I thought quartz was dutable ?

Granite starts as low as $35 a foot for builder grades and can run as high as $300 a sq for for exotics.
Quartz runs from $60 ft to upwards of $150 a foot depending on brand and color selection.

I think the Columbians installed a white granite countertop in my kitchen rather than a quartz countertop!! It stains like nothing else! A simple can of Nestea IceTea powder on the countertop creates rings! F-ckers ripped me off!

Quartz is 93% silica sir.
silica is quartz and sand. Silica is present in glass, cement, granite, quartz, and other natural stone and materials. Not harmful to the average homeowner, unless you take diamond tooling and grind your countertops often.
Quartz gives a more modern look. Granite was used in about 80% of kitchen remodels over the past 18 years... so, its everywhere and can look a little dated. And the radon they are finding in many granite slabs now is scary. Buyer beware!
the radioactivity in granite is not harmful to your health. There is radon nearly everywhere.
the radon levels (gasp) are approximately equivalent to those of concrete!

Probably... But for granite, the companies out there charge $36 per square foot, which also includes installation... I bought my granite at $10/ square foot. I used a diamond tip tile saw for two parts: A hole for the sink, and a cut on the left side... Took about an hour. Since the left side of the counter was not visible, and since I used a drop in sink, I didn't have to polish the granite. 14 square feet... $140, also looks good.
material cost on Calacatta or Statuarietto is more than $60 sq ft. You are looking at nearly $200 a sq ft for either of those in my area.
