      He mentioned it during his appearance on Inside the Actor's Studio. He described his discharge as (somewhat paraphrased) the Air Force saying "If you don't mention that you were here, we won't say anything either."
      Although at the time, he would have also been subject to the draft...

    Frank Zappa (Spin Magazine July, 1991)
    Civics was a class that used to be required before you could graduate from high school. You were taught what was in the U.S. Constitution. And after all the student rebellions in the 60’s, civics was banished from the student curriculum and was replaced by something called social studies. Here we live in a country that has a fabulous constitution and all these guarantees, a contract between the citizens and the government - nobody knows what’s in it. It’s one of the best kept secrets. And so, IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOUR RIGHTS ARE, HOW CAN YOU STAND UP FOR THEM?

    • @bluesrocker91
      @bluesrocker91 Před 5 lety +4

      Just be grateful your constitution is a single, clearly set out document. Here in the UK, our constitution is spread over hundreds of individual acts, collected over the course of 800 years. There's no safeguard to prevent parliament from trampling over all our basic liberties, and in the last 20 years, they've done just that.

    • @mardasman428
      @mardasman428 Před 2 lety +1

      Social studies has a very similar curriculum than civics had then. Don't portray this as this kind of insanely dangerous conspiracy against democracy, it was just a renaming of a class without any major change of its content.

    • @KonElKent
      @KonElKent Před 2 lety

      My high school combined English and the Social Studies into one course called "Block" which was 90 minutes every day for all four years; ninth grade was focused on State History, tenth grade was "world cultures" (sarcastic quotes required, it was a lot of Reader's Digest overviews with a LOT of "white guilt" tossed in. My first degree is in Anthropology, I have little tolerance for the overly sanitized view of spiritually pure cultures that were ultimately corrupted by the colonial powers. But I'm getting off on a tangent...) Eleventh grade was US History and Government. Twelfth grade was "Modern Civics".
      It's been 19 years, and I can still remember Mr. Kreutz, my eleventh grade Block teacher, making us go line by line through the Constitution and Amendments, and randomly assigning us research papers on topics we'd encounter in the real world.

    Quarantine has become Socially Distanced....

    • @KonElKent
      @KonElKent Před 2 lety

      They're still different things; quarantine refers to being completely separated from the group (ie; staying home upon exposure or showing symptoms). Social distancing allows for interaction with the group, just not engaging in direct physical contact and keeping some space between parties. Ted has to stay home for two weeks because he was with a lady of the evening (again! Geeze Ted!) and might have been exposed to tuberculosis; he needs to await a clear test. That's quarantine. Bill and Joe run into each other in the Home Depot, chat while keeping a few feet away from each other, and never shake hands or hug. They're social distancing.
      And if people hadn't have been frickin' stupid about them and related matters over the last two years, the Pandemic would be over by now.

    • @KonElKent
      @KonElKent Před 2 lety +3

      "Shell Shock" as used in the First World War was a medical misnomer. It was hypothesized, especially early in the war, that the constant concussions from the exploding artillery shells was actually causing neurological damage. Essentially the idea that modern warfare was doing horrible things to the soldiers in the trenches (well, technically, they weren't wrong). Common symptoms like tremors, motor function impairment, and speech problems lent some credence to the idea. The data of the time didn't quite support the base hypothesis in the long run, but the brass also used the term as an assault on the character of sufferers. Turning it into a synonym for fear or simply being crazy.
      The term actually made something of a comeback for brain injuries in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars.

    Yeah and the reason they called it shell-shock is because they thought the concussive force of the artillery barrages was temporarily shutting down portions of their brain, not exactly. So to be fair, calling it Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a whole lot more informative, especially when the cause isn't high explosives detonating in one's vicinity. And it becomes a handy little acronym to boot, PTSD, 4 letters down from 10.

    Playing devil's advocate, disabled is a better word than handicapped or crippled. I'm all for honest language, but not when it's mean-spirited, and because people are crass often so too are the words they use.

    As an English major only about 20% of his jokes landed. Almost all languages have multiple ways to say something. Not to mention most of his examples could still be referred to as the former, e.g. house trailer/mobile home, medicine/medication.. all are totally usable. I'm all for simple direct language but one of the beauties of the English language is how specific you can get by adding a word or two.

    • @gtrhro1119
      @gtrhro1119 Před rokem +1

      His point is that there are multiple ways to say something and some of them are worse, because they conceal the reality of the situation and keep people from having to think or feel things about it.

      Poor thing, Carlin's main point went right over your head. Being an English Major doesn't make you automatically smarter than the rest more so in common sense.
