    The Ritz was simply next level, never seen anything like it. That was beyond impressive besides sheer raw talent the camera work is out of this world in its setup and execution.

    So...it's problematic for me to have "Still I Rise" used here. Maya Angelou's poem isn't about "diversity and inclusion". It's about discrimination and brutality against African Americans and how we survive and thrive and RISE despite it. If there were no Black dancers in the competition at that point; I don't feel the poem should have been used. It's a co-opting of Ms. Angelou's words and meaning. There are plenty of spoken word performances that can be used to speak to diversity and inclusion that don't require a re-articulation or manipulation of the author's words and meaning. Ms. Angelou's meaning is perfectly clear, and particularly now...today -- shouldn't be re-interpreted.

    • @kennydreadfuls861
      @kennydreadfuls861 Před 3 lety +27

      I totally thought the same thing. They could have done “On The Pulse Of Morning” which fits that narrative better without changing the intent of the original work. It’s short sighted.

    • @tofadeawayagain
      @tofadeawayagain Před 3 lety +88

      Seeing as it was choreographed by Sean Cheesman, a Black choreographer, I think your argument about manipulation of the author’s words and meaning is moot in this particular instance. There may not have been any Black dancers left in the competition, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still a Black voice and vision being represented here. Sean’s voice and vision matter, and his choreography and art should still be seen, regardless of the dancers he had left to use. It would not be fair to Sean to have to pull his choreography simply because there was no visible Blackness involved.

      @aaldelphia8272 Před 3 lety +8

      Beautiful choreography but to choose a piece of art so beautiful in its original form and convert it to a meaning not true to it impact and messaging seems to degrade one artist’s work in favor of another - an unfair, unnecessary choice. Let me celebrate and enjoy each, in their own right.
