Marzanna was the Slavic goddess of death and winter. Traditionally in Poland, around the first day of spring, an effigy of Marzanna--a humanoid figure made of straw and decorated in rags and ribbons--is carried through the town before being burned or drowned in a river or pond. The destruction of this effigy is representative of the banishment of winter, in turn welcoming the re-birth that comes with spring.
