when I was younger and didn't have a computer that could run half life 2. I played Half life 2 first on the OG Xbox
Same. I would love a video on it.
Me too.
Same here. It was great being able to basically get most of the big PC games as ports on the Xbox and I certainly didn't feel cheated. I know PS2 was the king of that generation but for their first home console, Microsoft really delivered a killer console. To this day, I've not had one issue with it. I can't say the same thing about my 360. And don't get me started on the exclusives. Damn that was a time...
@@TheLeevoy My brother N law has 6 Xbox 360s, after a while microsoft refused to fix them, so they just stacked up over time. (Mabye 3 years of playing after school)
It was laggy
Man I really enjoyed this generation of consoles. in my opinion I feel that this was when 3D gaming really became a great thing. There was a level of polish and realistic graphics that for me anyways made me feel like I was in another world. I truly felt emersion while gaming I'd never felt before. The textures were might higher quality, better polygon count, actual reflections, shadows, lighting, it was the real deal. I remember when I first played Gran Turismo 3 which was my first time playing a next generation game, my Dad and I were BLOWN away. Anyways, thanks for the nostalgia, I loved this generation of gaming and it's very important to me. Great video!
Gamecube was extremely impressive if you look at what came before it.
And the games were also more creative and focused on gameplay, rather than graphics still. Also, no Microtransations or crazy DLC
@@memebot6490 dlc wasn't even a big thing but the dreamcast had it surprisingly.
The good thing about the Dreamcasts DLC was that it was free, mostly just little addons/tweaks. I remember my brother having the "themed"(Halloween/Christmas) Station Square in Sonic Adventure. Also trying and failing to get the Detonator Pak for Dynamite Cop. Also first console we owned that was played online(ChuChu Rocket!/Phantasy Star Online)
Mike Hawk my favorite 3D game of all time was in that generation: Metroid Prime on the GameCube
The Chronicles of riddick: escape from butcher Bay is one of the best looking games on the OG Xbox.
And due to it's at the time amazing dynamic resolution tech, it can also be the blockiest game on the Xbox at times.
@@dalton2k538 It was ahead of its time, in that regard, since modern games now heavily use dynamic resolution to maintain frame-rates at all costs. Doom 2016 did it to maintain a frame-rate on the Xbox One.

One of the best consoles of all time. Multiplatform games were amazing, exclusive titles were usually VERY good, the PC ports were fantastic feats and the homebrew scene is the second best in console history. Thanks for the video!
Sore Throat What do you consider the best?
@@Sniper257 personally i think the Wii brought everything to another level, specially when talking about emulators. Running GameCube games was awesome!
@@reisu_3708 The Wii runs gamecube games natively, it's the same powerPC architecture as the gamecube and didn't require any emulation...that said I would argue the homebrew on the Dreamcast is better than any other, there are still new homebrew games being released for it.

64 Megabytes probably wouldn't power a game's loading screen these days...

Got an OG xbox ages ago from a teacher, once I got the wire to display an image, (just came with AC power wire and controller) it worked fine, and was loaded with a ton of games as apparently it used to be in a pub...
First Xbox was a BEAST, I remember that GTA SA was more beautiful on it than on PS2.
Sypher Ti yea but it didnt release until years later
It had terrible controls though.
@@megami215 It came out in 2005, just one year after the PS2 port. Sony had the shared timed exclusive rights to it along with PC when it released in 2004.
The ps2 was a weak console though it had nasty graphics and was basically no better then a gameboy
@@theghost7277 PS2 is a complete boss, I have all the consoles from this generation modded and setup currently. PS2 kills them all... Easily. I actually rate them PS2, Wii, OG Xbox in their modded state. PS2 can go all the way from 240p to 1080i + VGA modes plus it feels way more arcade solid.
This inspired me to install my old xbox again, runs like a clock, not bad for a almost 20 year old console this advanced, sits next to my one s
If you want to ensure the xbox doesn't die, you need to remove the clock capacitor. Over time they leak and destroy the board.
Vad faen 😂😂😂
For a 2001 console, it is very impressive. In terms of power for the most part, it's at the very least slightly above average. The GPU is impressive though. In terms of games, it pushes the limits. I love it. Also, your videos must be doing something right if you keep my attention.
@Disappointed N64
Yeah never heard the term average used to describe the Xbox, even from developers at the time.
@Disappointed well by kinda average i mean at the very least slightly above average instead of below
@@RoxNoAnne That makes no sense. Its just a weird way of saying it was actually powerful. It just was, no way around it. Developers from the time said it. Running Doom 3 and Riddick at that time was bonkers.
My first and only original Xbox was a softmodded Xbox, lol. Had a whole bunch of games on it that started off my enjoyment on a lot of series. Halo, Dead or Alive, Timesplitters, Blinx the Time Sweeper, PhantomCrash...
Good times.
Phantom Crash Gang rise up xD
Panzer dragoon was very visually pleasing as well as the original onimusha on Xbox.
I remember playing Doom 3, with co-op over XBL. That was good times!
I played it as a kid on desktop with my brother. Scared the daylights out of us!
Morrowind took advantage of pixel shaders which many people on the PC didn’t even have at the time of release.
I remember being mesmerized the first time seeing it, that particular effect could only be done on the Xbox at the time.

Really well done mate. I'd love to see one on the Nintendo GameCube actually. For the time with it's Ati graphics, it was something to behold. Having really enjoyed Metroid Prime which had a lot more to offer visually than most other titles of that era on the NGC it was something to behold. Again, well done mate. Cheers...
Yep, totally agree - It is so powerful, yet compact and well designed! In my opinion the most impressive out of the bunch.
Good to see you back! Even though I was a PlayStation guy back then, the OG XBOX has always intrigued me with it's PC components. Also nice to see a framerate overlay overlay on the recorded XBOX footage, nicely done!
Only game missing in this video is Black. PS2 version of this game is impressive, but XBOX one is on another level in terms of graphics.
Saw it for sale when I was making this video but didnt pick it up, will keep that in mind.
It's enhanced for the XBX as well, only a shame it's not a full 16:9 ratio.
Black Is pretty on xbox
@@theghost7277 doesn't matter what it's on, I've seen both versions and they're both stunning. The broken glass effect on Xbox is a little weird to me though (big chunks of it instead of small pieces on ps2).
@@markjacobs1086 because the graphics processor on a ps2 is still working with octagons like a dreamcast used to whereas the xbox is actually useing pixels to create an image like a pc would. Never made a proper console video? Had me fooled, because it was fantastic. I also have lots of love for the OG Xbox, great system, and awesome to see some coverage on it!
I know you struggled to fit a pc inside the case of the xbox... Its now time to do the easy build with much more room... Put a pc in the controller
@MarcoC978 I think even a full raspberry pi should fit into the Duke
You could put an Intel compute stick in it.
Now that's a life hack! I'm sure the controllers are cheaper than two full towers. And had just the same amount of space.
No words. I remember the video you did on the broken Xbox's GPU.
Knowing about the RAM and CPU upgrades makes me wanna track one down and give that a try. It could also (probably) benefit from an IDE->SATA converter and then a solid-state drive.
You can upgrade the CPU too?
From experience in trying a SSD, Solidstate doesn't really offer any benefits over a standard sata HDD, the problem is the bitrate of the IDE interface isn't fast enough to even fully saturate a slow 5400 rpm platter drive, let alone a SSD.
i would love to see a HL2 Original XBOX video, it was my first HL2 Experience too

Seeing someone who actually knew what Phantom Crash was let alone played it and enjoyed it has to be one of the rarest things possible. Game was a hidden gem and honestly I had to pick my jaw up off the floor after you mentioned it.
I'm still impressed how alot of the games still look so good and perform on the original Xbox, it's clearly the best of the three when it comes to playing playing third-party games where the PS2 and GameCube can fall behind.
Definitely was the most powerful console of its generation. When I first played GTA: San Andreas on Xbox, the draw distance was unbelievable compared to PS2. I would sadly never get to try the golden days of Xbox Live as I didn't have internet as a kid.
Half-Life 2 blow my mind back in 2005 had great fun playing games such as Fuzion Frenzy and Halo CE also Driver Parallel lines love the original Xbox.
@KaheeroZ Sure did you can get it on eBay for cheep.
Steel battalion on the original Xbox is a marvel to behold it really is and it still impresses me to this day the same way from when I brought it on release. The original Xbox is my most played console, I absolutely love the thing.

Chronicles of Riddick Escapee from Butcher's Bay was easily my favorite og xbox game. The second game was meh but it came with a remaster which made it worth it!
Bloody worth it and I have to agree the Xbox was and still is a great system and I miss having one in my collection. As a whole the 6th Gen of games consoles will always be my personal favourite along with the PS3 from the 7th Gen.
Nice video! I like how in depth this video is, it gives good detail
Love the video, excellent work as always Hamish! Would love to see a video like this on the Wii
Most surprising thing about this video, you managed to not put any Sega GT 2002 music in despite the Xbox being its exclusive console.
I enjoyed the effort you put into this video so you earned a subscriber.
Yooo, Phantom Crash was so dope. Loved that game, especially the soundtrack! Also loved the vid!

Probably my go to console out of all in my collection. The 4 joypad support out of the box is a big plus. Had a few great nights with 4 player arcade emulated fun.
Good video man, thanks for doing this.
The original Xbox was the first console I actually thought about buying (but didn't). I remember seeing one of the Gotham Racing games and wanting it so bad!
This was a good video on the subject! I actually had no idea HL2 was ever ported over, that kind of made my jaw drop.

But a rtx 2080ti that is beat by amd (ati). At least during that time ati were better for quite a while. Nvidia was getting better during the gtx 600 series 11 years later. Xbox could've used faster ati chips that are also a bit cheaper but yeah...

I've got two softmodded original Xbox consoles. A 500GB 1.6 and a rescued 1.0 with a upgraded 2TB SATA drive. The 1.0 had a dying hard drive with the click of death. Both of their DVD drives were dead but luckily I had a friend sell me a 1.4 Xbox with a working DVD drive. Unfortunately that console was dead (probably clock cap killed it), but I was able to salvage the DVD drive to softmod my other systems, and I swapped the GPU heatsink from the dead 1.4 over to my 1.0 since the GPU fan was dying causing it to overheat. I'm so happy I discovered the modding community for these things. These old consoles are great with a few QOL upgrades.
Got a nostalgia feeling with an Xbox original and "Ty the Tasmanian Tiger" music in the background
So the whole main menu shifts a little on idle? That's so cool!
One of the best things about the Xbox was how easy it was to mod. Install the XMBC O/S (referred too as Kodi today) and it could stream media files over your home network, play online radio stations, backup you discs to the HDD to run from there, and you could install some emulators in XBMC and play any game from the 8/16 bit era and pretty every 2D arcade game ever made. It was the ultimate HTPC before HTPC was even a thing
This was absolutely excellent. You've been teasing about this Phantom Crash video for ages now...
Phantom Crash was one of my favorite games, there was a sequel for the game called SLAI that was for the ps2. Spent ages trying to remember name of the game. Thank you!
this is the comment I was looking for, also there was a recent game for PS4 with the same thematic tone called Hawken
@@amnottabs Hawke has been out on pc for well over half a decade. it's a shame the servers are awful or I would constantly be on it
I still am more impressed with what Sega dreamcast did with such a small package
Dreamcast was super efficient for what it was. It took awhile before developers got the ps2 running up to its potential, and before they did it was tough to look at something like Tekken Tag Tournament running next to Soul Calibur, because it made you wonder if the ps2 wasn't quite as powerful as we'd been led to believe. Then GT3 Aspec and SH2 came out and we sadly realized that our old friend the Dreamcast had finally been overtaken in the visuals department. That first batch of ps2 games definitely didn't meet expectations though!
did you know that, if Sega had gotten its head out of its ass and had worked on the Dreamcast instead of keeping the stupid Saturn alive, the Dreamcast could have been release in late 1997?
This was a great video! Thanks for the gen 1 Xbox love!
Amazing video. Absolutely top quality. The original xbox was quite the beast. This was the only generation where my family owned two consoles when I was growing up. For some reason, we had a copy of spiderman 2 on both consoles. It was the first time I really appreciated differences in actual console performance.
Please do a video on the porting process for HL2 on Xbox! I played it originally on a 3.06ghz P4 and 512MB of DDR2 and it struggled then
I played the game on a Celeron D 2.8ghz and FX5700 (Entire Combo was big purchase mistake, Should have went AMD and ATI). With 768MB DDR RAM running windows XP. I thought the game played pretty decent, granted I only had a 17" CRT at the time. 1280x1024. Had the game on the Xbox as well, and enjoyed playing it from the TV.
I wish I still had my old modded Xbox, even with the softmod you can still swap out the HDD. I had a 160GB HDD in mine, autobooting into XBMC. Which was used as a hub that managed all my content. Tons of emulators, and could connect to network drive to watch all the xvid avi Movies I had at the time. That Media Machine really did me proud for years. I was lucky Enough to have a old 32" CRT TV with Component jacks in the back. Wasn't until around the time xbox360 got its first dashboard revision that I stopped using the xbox as my media box.
Half life 2 didnt need a port m8 it was a late release if you can find it
I had the exact same specs and I had no problems playing the game in DX9 1380x1024 with a geforce5800 or so card. Also playable in dx8 mode in Intel GMA gfx (gma800 or so)
@@ayuchanayuko I didn't have dedicated graphics at the time 😥

Love the original Xbox. I wish it had 128MB of ram which was the original plan instead of the 64MB that we got!!!! PS2 had 32MB of ram so the Xbox only had double memory. Imagine 128MB of ram on the Xbox....the PS2 would have been in real trouble.

Kinda miss my xbox now, seeing as there so cheap might pick one up again. Just need to find a copy of Chaos Theory and a usb cable.
Not Chaos Theory, you want the original Splinter Cell for a softmod.
The original Splinter Cell's what I used to softmod my OG Xbox, back in 2018, had the game since my brother bought it for me years ago. Also had a USB to Xbox controller port cable for years before I finally got around to modding it.
At a yard sale they are cheap. But at local flea markets they normally go for 50 bucks. Local game stores recently jacked up prices for them to around 65 to 85. Your mileage may vary around you but for me it's hard to find serious deals on retro game hardware. Hell, unless I get lucky with a private seller, SNES systems go for 100 to 120 around here.
