  • Are you drowning in bikes? Does your spouse complain that it will never end? Do you always need just one more? .... or is it just me?
    Well hopefully this will help!

A fat bike with a second 29x3.0 wheelset for off-road exploring, bikepacking, off-trail exploring, snow/sand, and commuting. One note on your video, I think the fat bike is even more important in the deserts of the southwest United States than in the snowy north. If you’ve ever seen 6-12” of deep, dry, powdery sand or moon dust, you’ll know it’s true. That stuff swallows lesser bikes whole!
A 700c drop bar bike for gravel, touring, bikepacking, and commuting.
A full suspension MTB for when the boys & girls are feeling rowdy, bikepacking, and jumping.
A good trailer for converting any of those into a medium duty cargo bike.
When I hit 10 bikes, I realized I needed to reevaluate the n+1 philosophy. I started thinking, how FEW bikes can I have and still do all the different types of riding I love? The answer is one. I could do everything on a fat bike with the second wheelset. But you’d be sacrificing a fair bit in every discipline except off-trail exploring. So the number I landed on is those three.
As I get older, the MTB will go first, because it has the highest maintenance costs and introduces the most risk into my life. The gravel bike will be the next to go, as it’s the least stable and most limited. No matter what, the main thing I’ve learned is that when it comes to bikes, more is not better, it’s just more expensive and time consuming.

Mine are road, mtb, rigid trail (fat tire conversion) and gravel (two wheel sets). Gravel is good backup for road if it is down with mechanical. Rigid is good back up for gravel. Etc etc.

Just did a video on this... my personal conclusion is 2. Fat and gravel. But I’m open to a 3rd which would be a pub/commuter bike and I think the fatty is geographically dependent. Agree with pretty much everything you have said here!

The number of bikes I have is 7 and no room for more. They are as follows: 3 hybrids ((1 for road /commuting/ gravel 1 for various rolls / cargo 1 for back if either or both are down. )) cx bike 2 road bike ( not much use) finally 26 mountain bike That my friends covers almost the whole spectrum of cycling

Gravel and mountain bike are in my stable. I am going to turn my road bike in to a gravel bike. I would take as many as I can get!

I have a Surly KM and a 15 year old aluminum Specialized road bike with 28cc tires. The road bike is a harsher on the road than the KM on trails. I'd like to get a gravel bike but afraid of the speed loss on roads. What tires do/would you run on your Checkpoint to keep up with the rest of the boys. Let's face it road riding isn't that much fun and going slow on the road is even worse.

So Ive found that I don’t mind even just riding 45mm Riddlers on the group ride. But the fastest tires I currently run are 38mm Gravelking slicks, as they are still tough enough for a bit of dirt. That said alot of high end road tires come in 700x32 and that would be perfect for wider gravel wheels without having any noticeable speed loss.
