Hi Kalungi. I am a native swahili speaker from Tanzania. I propose you visit the country for you to perfect your swahili. Alternatively try to access online swahili material (Songs. News, etc) it will help you build vocabulary and understand grammatical nuances of the language

Tysm this kinda helped as well that u xdid spell some of the words wrong but it was a help and some of the words are weirdly spelt like "kuoeliwa" in swahili if I were to say it it would be saying to kill someone instead of saying to be married so it should be spelt with no "e"
Hongera

Question: 1) How commonly spoken is Swahili in East-Afirca? Wikipedia states that it is widely spoken in Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. On the other hand, a friend of mine who spent a year in Kenya said Swahili wasn't commonly used. She said something to the extend of "Swahili is born in Tanzania, is practiced in Uganda, and died in Kenya" :'(
+Jake Wolford She's right! There's a standard joke that goes something along the lines of "Swahili was born in Tanzania, raise in Kenya, traveled through Uganda and died in Congo." It varies depending on the person telling it! - Tanzania is pretty much all Swahili. There is English in the tourist areas (Dar, Moshi, Arusha, Zanzibar and a bit in Mwanza) but outside of that be prepared for a lot of Swahili.
- Kenya - there is Swahili but most people speak a slang form of the language mixed with English to create what they call "SHANG". I speak English and Swahili but am totally lost in Shang. They also speak a lot of tribal languages in Kenya so Swahili is definitely not as common.
- Uganda- is similar to Kenya. Some people will have Swahili but mostly English and tribal languages.
- DRC - there is Swahili but it's mixed with French and depends more so on the area of DRC
- Rwanda - Some people will know some Swahili especially if they spent any time in refugee camps in Tanzania or - Congo. Overall, it's not too common (more Kinyarwanda, English and French)
- Burundi - haven't been there but I imagine same as Rwanda.
Swahili varies and even though we have sheng we still speak swahili. It's just the same as English. Uk, Australia or USA have some differences when it comes to their English.
Your fried lied to you. Kiswahili is spoken in almost every corner in Kenya. There are a few sections that you can come across , though not spoken but if you speak it you are definitely understood and the fellows we reply back in a somehow a broken one. Non kisanifu au ukosaji wa ufasaha na nasaha busara ya lugha ya kiswahili.
Unajitaidi sana mwalimu
I’m swahili myself but my swahili is not nearly as good as yours..Thanks for the detailed video
