A little bit about us...
We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream!
Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, fifteen months after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia.
We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way.
Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is!
As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. But for these people it's a dream, or may not even be a dream.
We will look around and when the opportunity to help comes we will put our hands and hearts in to it.

Just ordered one from Mike, I really like the idea if using a pressure washer, especially the idea of putting the membranes out of the way and using the pressure washer hose to feed them. The K5 pump is even quieter. All at about 1/5 the cost of a conventional system! Thanks for the info in your video :)

You could get a second membrane and housing, and then get my suggestions in the video for pumps, and you could get up to 55 gallons per hour. No biggie. When the Karcher dies go to the video and you can get the pump and motor for 600ish US plus shipping. Ceramic piston pump...your choice of 12 volt dc or 120 volt ac or 240 volt ac motors.
Thanks Simon for your Technical Video on the installation of the Seawater Pro Deselinator at a righteous price! I reply to the comments below that question how the Karcher will hold out in a saline environment I simply say at around £100 new it is not exactly a big ticket item to fret over in the grand scheme of things. Way to go - I'm now ordering the same from Mike at Seawater Pro.

Well that looked like it went pretty straight forward and the obstacles that came up were easily surmountable.
Interesting that you used a straight forward Karcher, my thoughts on that was how will it bear up to salt water and I see others have wondered that as well.

Many years since the video. Out of curiosity, how long the pressure washer lasted on this setup? And the reverse osmosis membranes? I love the solution for a cheaper watermaker!
Love the system. Love the comments. I do have 1 suggestion - add another activated carbon unit after the particulate filters. It will help with the taste and also provide insurance against sea water that is not particularly clean.

the cool thing is, you still can use the karcher to clean your boat. only be careful in winter, the karcher pump can crack if its frozen
Super job! May be you can give me more information about the equipment you use. That’ll be very helpful for me and the other bluewater guys. Please let us informed about your experience. You are assured that the Karcher is long term seawater stable? Or do you flushing it also with freshwater? What about maintenance? How often you have to change the filters? Excited for more information
No problem, We don't know how long the karcher will take to pack up, but it is not expensive and very easy to find at any supermarket. I guess we will find out how long it will take at some point. We flush with freshwater, but they say you don't need to as long as you use at least once a week. We bought extra filters because it will depend on how clean the water is. So, again we will find out. We bought an extra Karcher too that we use to clean the boat for now and in case the oner one needs to be replaced we already have one. Cheers

I wonder how long the karcher pump will work with seawater
Our problem with the karcher was the pressure pipe, had kinks and it’s not easy to get replacements over here
Remember to collect fresh water before shut down feed back into pick up line to clean it out salt water 10 ltrs will do it good
just see you push the 10mm feed into a push fit. most push fit pipe generally requires an insert for cold or hot flow. just pointing that out as I couldn't see one, I guess that's more relevant if under pressure.
It came with the Kit, so I suppose it will be fine. Thank you anyway. Cheers

im thinking if you put the name and type of each part/connecters eta you could buy the bits over a long period and then fit it as you buy, awesome job by the way i already have the power washer and should be a easy job to un hose it and use it as a power washer also.Win Win Thanks guys

Personally, after reviewing the Seawater Pro system, I think I like it better than ANYTHING on the market. EVERYTHING except the RO cannister-filter is off-the-shelf at your local hardware store! It's a 600-gpd system, and if you break-fail-crack-lose a component, you can run down to your local hardware store and buy a replacement INSTANTLY! Keep a spare cannister and a couple of RO elements in-stock on a boat, and you have AMPLE water! $1495...with full install instructions. It just doesn't get 'more economical' or common-sense than this!
And no complaints about it, it's working just fine. Cheers
Is the Karcher still working? I realise lots of things have changed over the years, with more bespoke high pressure pumps being now available, but I wondered how long you got out of the Karcher? The biggest downside I imagine is the noise.....pressure cleaners are not noted for their quietness.
maybe remove the pressure washer pump from the large case, and use the wast salt water output and wrap a steel line around the motor housing to keep it cool

Awesome job. Curious how long the Karcher pressure washer will last in the salt water environment. Looks like a wonderful job.
We will see Tom, we bought an extra one that we are using to clean the boat at the moment but it is the replacement one in case that one decides to pack up . They are quite cheap anyway, but we will let you know. Cheers

any long term reliabilty issues with the pressure washer in salt water ? these type of pressures washers dont seem to last very long in home use . usually motor faillure is the issue

Easy (somewhat) installation of a DIY water maker. I am going the same route, and have sourced the parts, except the high pressure pump, and find your solution with the high pressure washer fantastic. Easy and cheap unit to renew to save cost.
My question is however; the data page for Kärcher states a pressure output 20 - max.120 bar, i.e. 290 - max.1740 psi. How do you limit the pressure to steady 800 psi?
PS I have a pressure washer at 1500 psi, would love to be able to use it.
Hi, that is somewhat beyond me, but, you control the pressure with the master valve. You set this so you are making around 90lt per minute.
The Karcher did work well but the endurance was not great. We went through two in a year living onboard and using it most days for an hour. In the end we bought a proper pump from Sea Water Pro. Then it was all a dream for hours, and alot quieter.

This is an interesting video on the installation. I assume the Karcher high pressure pump runs on AC power and the low pressure water pump runs on DC power? So if you are operating this system while away from shore power can you run it exclusively off battery power?
3kw inverter will smash it of shore

The SeawaterPro website that sells this kit has this to say: "Draws about 900 watts at 800 psi and will run with a Honda EU2000i (1600 watt) generator."

Hi Ocean fox,,,,,,,,, been watching this excellent video ,, watched it first ages ago when it came out and put it in the back of my head for further examination and reference when i new i would need it ,,, which is now ,,, most of the vid i understand easily but have a few problems ,, 1 st ,, is the 12 v inlet pump supplied with the " seawater pro kit " ( 1200E ) ,, 2nd , do you use ordinary ( decent ) water hose on the high pressure output to the membrane and is that just ordinary hozelock connectors , i read in the comments that you have had some issues with kinking in this pipe ,, also am i correct in that you have had no issues with the karcher pump using salt water ,,, ,, love your vids ,,, thank you R
Hi, the 12volt lift pump comes with the kit from Seawater Pro.
They also send you most of the pipes that you require. You will need a pipe to go from the 12 volt pump to the first filter, and one from the fresh water outlet to your tank.
We did have a problem twice with the Karcher high pressure hose getting a kink in it. We also found the Karcher noisy. In the end we changed to the pump that Mike has (Seawater Pro). The system will now run for hours
Always give Mike a ring, mention us and he will be most helpful.

sorry to bother yo again Simon, is Seawater in Florida , i can not find any UK,, i believe this may involve some import tax , ( is that why you got yours into Gib ? ) , i watched their video and they have a dedicated high pressure hose from Karcher to membrane ,, ta Rod
roderick mchardy yes, they are in Florida. We got ours in Gibraltar just because we were there at the time preparing the boat for the crossing. So you might have to pay VAT.

We use the spare one to clean the boat and one day it will be on the water maker I guess. We bought that would be a good idea to have a spare one in case it brakes somewhere underway. Thank you. Cheers

Edit: joke aside, very impressive and thank you so much for putting it on youtube, some years ago I read somewhere that an Austrian guy built a water maker by using a pressure washer and he was saying that he had no remarkable problems.

We stopped in Tarifa instead of Gibraltar during our crossing from the USA to Turkey for we heard horror stories about the place, but we sailed right in front of it on our way to cartagena🙂

bizim eller we will be upgrading the water maker in Portugal as we got new parts and we will video working as well. Apparently is going to double, we will be making 180 litres an hour, which is pretty amazing
The Input to the Karcher shuld be where the output is !

Tell me, how is the flush (Raindrip) set up?
The flush took a water supply from the galley. Set the system to let water through each day for two minutes.. really is that simple. The Wast goes out over the side.
How much is the total cost for this DIY project.?
Hi Francis, the cost is on Seawater Pro website I believe. This was a few years ago so the prices are probably not the same we paid at the time. But I have to say that it’s probably the cheaper water maker you could have. Cheers
Why not capture the excess salty water in a saltwater tank before overflowing over the side. Then you have a source of clean saltwater as well as potable water. I love showering with saltwater, then rinsing with freshwater.
I did enjoy the video but if you go to all the trouble of installing it why not fit a quality unit rather than a home made job,I guess if it doesn't work out in the end all you have to buy is a quality high pressure pump and the rest is done
Absolutely, but so far is working very well, no problems at all.
you can easily retro fit a 'normal' triplex pump and AC or DC powered motor from Seawater pro, (they use italiam pumps and you can get US made Leeson motors or import motors... your choice, and still come up thousands cheaper. I know Mike personally and there are virtually no failures of the K4 watercooled motors even after over 3 years in service.

Not getting the need for the carbon filter on the right hand side? What is it trying to do?

@@SailingOceanFox so, I read on another channel that when you flush, you might have contaminants in your water system from shore water, like chlorine etc. That's the info I was looking for, because if you had clean water in your system, a carbon filter would be of no benefit.
I guess the best person to answer that would be Mike from SeaWater Pro but as far as I understand the carbon filter will filter that as well
@@SailingOceanFox the point I'm trying to make is that is the reason. "It’s for when the system flushes" isn't explaining the reason. it would be helpful if you explained why it was necessary. If you only have water in your tank from the RO unit, it would not be necessary. only if your water comes from suspect sources.
@@sspence65 well that’s a point, we use a mix of from the water maker and from Marinas. So we never really know about the ones at the Marina. But if you send an email to Mike, he is pretty good replying

How's that pressure washer still working?
Sadly they gave up after a year. That is two in twelve months. We now have a proper pump and it can make water all day long. It was a great way of making the watermaker work on a budget, and yes it did make totally fresh water

Why a watermaker in a boat this size surly there is enough tankage in there for two on long hauls
We have a 600l water tank, but we didn't want to cross the Atlantic without a water maker as everything can happen. It is always a good idea to have a plan B in case something happens.Plus that will allow us and our crew to shower everyday during the crossing. Cheers
You don't want your cat to be heavy so 600 ltr is already a lot
The guy who posted the whole idea of using a pressure washer pump took down his video not too long after posting it. Why? Because the pressure/g/p/m flow rate don't work. The membranes will clog as there is not sufficient flow rate to wash the solids out. A lot of work only to be undone. Buy the proper pump and motor! There is a reason proper systems cost why they cost.
The Karcher pump is not salt prove. It’s going to fail on you my friend.
More expensive, much larger, not integrated than Katadyn PowerSurvivor 40E (only unit that can be hand operated in case of emergency). So, I won't buy.
We didn't want an integrated one, so this one works perfectly. Cheers
