    What a treat! As part of the Martin series I was lucky enough to get to play some very cool guitars. I started out with the Signature series Jorma Kaukonen "M" size guitar with the enlarged sound hole. An awesome, big sound performers' guitar. This Tasty Riffs video also features two BareFoot MusicNews Exclusives. As far as we know, Dan Grigor was the only player at NAMM 2010 to play the museum piece double-neck and the hundred and ten thousand dollar D-100.
    We had a great day with Martin seeing their entire line and talking with Chris and Jorma Kaukonen but the highlight of the day was playing these guitars.
    How cool is that?
    For those curious about the songs
    Hiya Collin, There are 3 songs here, all mine.
    The first one is Enjoy and you can find a full version here
    • Grigor Reviews the Bed... .
    The second one on the double-neck is Altitoodles full version here
    • Altitoodles - 12 strin... .
    The last one on the D-100 is a previously unreleased song of mine called "My Heart Out."
    I sorta forgot about that song. I'll have to record it, It sure is a fun song to play.
    Thanks for listening!

      the inlay must have taken so many man hours, to say it's not worth 110,000 dollars means that you cannot compare the man hours it takes to build a 300,000 dollar house and then come home to a 50,000 dollar house and still have time to do what you love for an hour or two...

    Why make an instrument if it's just going to be thrown into a museum. Guitars aren't furniture.. Play them

    • @picketf
      @picketf Před 9 lety +3

      Very valid point. Also most museums don't have enough money to preserve such pieces (a near vacuum or special gas mixture tank would be ideal) instead they slowly rot in a glas shelf. Also too bad that synthesizers rarely get the right to name their sound patches after the instruments (brands) they are recorded off, that would actually be sweet if you could pay a few bucks and get a version of the sounds this guitar produces recorded in surround SUPERnatural from Roland to play on your regular high end $ 800 midi guitar (hooked to a 1,5k synth-rack and 2k speakers)

    Dan Grigor, a 12-string virtuoso, has been playing guitar for more than 50 years. This season of his life has brought a new twist to his music. Tapping out melodies on the fret board with the right hand while chording with the left is a popular electric guitar technique. When taken to the acoustic 12-string, it requires an additional level of skill and talent, but as the finger ballet unfolds, it brings about a delightfully visual listening experience. Refreshingly smart poetry accompanies the music and touches places in our hearts, our minds and our middles. Known for his wordplay and lyrical vocabulary, Grigor creates songs that say with few words the things we all feel. If you get a chance to see a live show, do it. The funny and incredibly talented Grigor entertains us by being himself. You feel as if you’ve made a new friend, or found an old one.

      Paying for a $110,000 guitar is excessive commercialism at it's finest, there is absolutely no way any guitar is worth $110,000. It's only worth that much because the people wanting to sell it say so.
      There is no way the sound difference between a $2,000 and an $110,000 guitar is worth $108,000 - that's a completely ridiculous notion.

    A guitar only worth this much if it induces orgasm, vomit, and bloodspurt from the eyes when its tones hit the eardrums. Otherwise it's just a piece of over appreciated wood and a few metal pieces.

      If it were a one of a kind owned by Hendrix or Elvis then I can understand the value behind it. The kind of guitar that sits in a museum or in a vault somewhere. I bet there's a regular bicycle out there with 100k price tag, boasting how it was made from jet airplane parts and junks. Oh well...buy it and smash it, because it's worth it.

      The people who would spend the 100k on this are the same people who wouldn't hesitate to drop even more money on other collector items. This isn't "I want a guitar to jam on, let's see what's out there" -- the most likely scenario is this will go behind glass in a climate controlled room and bring profit one day when it changes hands.

      hey if they made it and hung it in their own museum they could say it's worth a zillion bucks... Not sure they would sell many of those. the point is the serial number. If you actually listen to the video you'll find out that they made two of the double-necks. Showpieces to show what the custom shop can really do. If you held this and were having them make you a custom guitar this would be impressive. You would be convinced they could do it down to the most intricate details. It is the D-100 the third guitar in the video that is worth $110,000 the double-neck is not for sale. It's in a museum now... with a long gray beard hair in it.

      Well, perhaps one that was played by a famous person. I can see that. But just because it's the one millionth instrument made by a particular maker without any famous person ever having owned it or played a historical concert with it or recorded a historical album with it or done something out of the ordinary with it is just presumptuous on the part of the manufacturer. Guitars like that I can command much higher prices. Usually museums or very wealthy collectors are the ones that buy them. For example, Maybelle Carter's guitar or that belonging to Segovia or Jimi Hendrix.

    You got that right! As for the pick, I do use a bit of first finger curl. My first finger bends at the tip just a little, and a right angle at the middle. The thumb is parallel with the back of the first. Making the OK sign with the pick perpendicular to the strings. The key to me is relaxing your pinky and other fingers. Making a fist tenses muscles you really need to have loose. Relax the other fingers and stroke like shaking off a ring.

    I was Dans cameraman that day. We saw and did so much crazy stuff that day, I didn't even give much thought to Dan playing the most expensive guitar in a building filled with THOUSANDS of guitars. Dan was handed the guitar because he had just smoked the strings off a Martin moments before, barefoot, in the middle of Martin's camp. I asked him off camera what he was going to play, and he just shrugged and said "I don't know, something silly I guess. It is about the guitar, not me". That's Dan.

      me too, ist already hard enough to tell how great these guitars sound because its tricky to capture the real tone with mics then look at the mics on cameras people use for youtube, and after compressing the videos, not to forget i am using built in speakers on a computer,
      i do have a studio with dynaudio bm6as but the sound of this video is horrible

      @ver2oso  Před 10 lety

      Fat Lip The real problem there is how loud that place is. 250,000 people and every possible musical instrument you can think of. There isn't a quiet place to take it and if there was I'm not sure they would have let me take it there. Still, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity I had to try something! The artistry was worth the video, the sound, well, you'll have to trust me, oh and Martin and Co. they make a pretty good guitar on a regular day. These were kinda special.
