  • I reviewed and tested the Origin8 2.4 GHz Wireless NES Controller by Retro-Bit for NES, Switch and USB compatible systems like PC and RetroPie.
    I tired it out with my Nintendo Switch and Retro USB AVS as well as my NES and Famicom AV systems. I even play some Street Fighter II' with it via USB. Made a comparison to 8BitDo N30 2.4g and the original NES controller.

    Awesome controllers, you got the 2 best one's, the 3rd origin controller should of been the famicom color scheme with that burgundy and gold not the red and black but well it is what it is. Enjoy!

    • @8bitjoystick
      @8bitjoystick  Před 8 měsíci

      Well, the black and gray one is the same color of the AV famicom which you can actually use it with. But I would really like is a decent 2.4G wireless controller for the OG Famicom.

      @@8bitjoystick yeah that's what I meant to say you got the NES scheme which I like as well as the Gameboy scheme which I also like but the 3rd one that has a silver d-pad is the one I believe that should of been the family computer famicom one!

      Now that I think about it, an OG famicom themed one would be pretty popular in Japan. When I was at Portland retro gaming Expo, I spoke to the guy at the retrobit booth and he was talking about how they can't officially sell their wireless controllers in Japan because they'd have to get them licensed and approved by the Japanese regulatory agencies but their fans that want them and have been buying them on Amazon and having them shipped to Japan, which is funny because I buy retro stuff on amazon japan and get it shipped to the US. We actually have it pretty darn good for retro accessories and retro systems in the west right now.

    Looks like a pretty good controller. I'd get one if I didn't already have the N30 for my switch, the two extra shoulder buttons are great for stuff like Panzer paladin

      I don't play NES and SNES games on my Switch (I have a Switch Lite) but if I did this would be great. It was a little overkill for me to order two but I love me some NES.

      I just got my Origin8 GB Grey edition in the mail today. Overall i prefer 8bitDo's 2.4G 'N30'. Why? Because it has the better and more authentic NES D-pad, the B&A buttons feel just a touch more premium and snappy, and there's no shoulder butters that get in the way if you're using this exclusively, like I am, with the NES.
      But I'm loving the Origin8's GameBoy aesthetic, and I prefer the feel of it's start & Select buttons over the N30's. Latency wise, haven't tested it out just yet. But that alone could easily be a deal breaker!

  • @NeonPizzas
    @NeonPizzas Před 2 měsíci

    Totally random, but does the AVS still do firmware updates? If they added a CRT interpolation/Softness Depth slider to go along side the Scan line depth slider I'd be over the moon. :D

    • @8bitjoystick
      @8bitjoystick  Před 2 měsíci

      It is possible to update The firmware but there hasn't been any new versions in a while

    • @NeonPizzas
      @NeonPizzas Před 2 měsíci

      @@8bitjoystick Bummer! A CRT/Interpolation depth slider, imo, is the main missing ingredient with the AVS. But, it's 720p cap(instead of 1080p) should make the image look a little softer when upscaled to a 4K OLED TV, and messing with the scan line slider should help out even further.
      I really wish they'd do an AVS 2. Throw in a softness depth Slider, add 1080p, Make the console itself a lot smaller and turn it into a top loader. As of now, I'd rather buy an Nt Mini, but they're going for nearly 2 grand on eBay...And i doubt Analogue has any plans on doing a revision.

    Hows the Turbo frequency on the Origin8? My only complaint with the 8bitdo is how slow the turbo frequency is compared to old 3rd party wired controllers from back in the day.

    When you say the dpad feels "mushy", what do you mean? Is the dpad harder to press or lighter to press compared to the original nes controller? How different are the buttons?

    • @8bitjoystick
      @8bitjoystick  Před 7 měsíci +2

      Well, I think the original Nintendo d-pad actually raises a little higher and this is a little flatter. It has a good center in the middle, but it doesn't have the arrows that the original Nintendo d-pad had. It is still pretty darn good. I just wish that they would have made it a little closer to the original Nintendo d-pad but it still feels great and I'm glad that I bought two of them

      So overall the N30 is the winner? I DO like the look of the game boy inspired Origin8, but if the D-pad is mushy than i think i'll just stick with the N30. I wish there was a 2.4G controller that looked nearly identical to the original NES controller. N30 doesn't look quite as nice imo, since it's mostly just black and lacks that iconic look of the OG.

      @@8bitjoystick Just ordered the GameBoy inspired Origin8 yesterday. It's always fun getting brand new revised or unique products that try and improve on old wired controllers. Love the look of the Origin8's 80's inspired NES styled spacey' box too. I think may just keep it. :P And I'm totally cool with the D-pad not feeling entirely identicle to that of the original NES's. It would get a little stale if everything tried to mimic the exact same layout and look, at least for me personally. As long as it's not too mushy, i prefer the tactile feeling of the original, or what 8bitDo did with the N30 2.4G.
      I wish RetroBit would release a wireless 2.4G DogBone NES controller, but with the B&A buttons being slightly closer together and placed straight across instead of diagonally. Blows my mind that Nintendo released the DB as is. It's so awkward when you're running in a game while down the B button, and simultaneously pressing A to jump which forces you to arch your thumb up diagonally, that, combined with the two buttons being spread out further is a total deal breaker depending on the NES game.

      After comparing my Origin8 against the N30, It's the N30(2.4g) all day and every day. The only redeemable thing(s) about the Origin8 are it's awesome GameBoy variant inspired aesthetic and just how great the Start & Select Buttons feel, which feel far better, better than the original NES pad's as well. Yet the N30, as ugly as it looks, has a much nicer D-pad that feels closer to the original NES's, the B&A buttons feel a touch more premium & snappy, there's no awkward L&R buttons to get in the way when playing NES games AND it doesn't rattle like the Origin8. Plus, the Origin8's D-pad feels just a little on the mushy side and it doesn't help that it's too sunken in. Overall it just feels like a cheaper controller, that I'd rather just look at. :P
      An original NES controller with Console5' replacement silicone button membranes is still my preferred way to play(as lame as the top left cable placement is), then the N30(2.4g) which comes close. I just wish the N30 2.4g looked better. Going with a nearly all black design was a bad idea imo. Where's the early 90's totally rad & awesome custom Nintendo Power NES decal sticker when you need it? lol

    I bet this could be made Bluetooth with the Hyperkin SNES to Classic Mini controller adapter and the Retro Bit Legacy 16 Dongle. You could probably use the Legacy 16 Dongle for Consolized GBA as well and have the perfect amount of buttons like using the 8Bitdo SNES Dongle and the NES Online Controller. It's perfect for it.

      @@8bitjoystick No I sound a bit confusing but I wasn't wanting to use it on the SNES Mini. I was just saying to use the Hyperkin SNES to Classic Mini adapter to plug into the 8Bitdo GBros adapter and use the SNES Legacy 16 Dongle so you have your pins for your shoulder buttons. I would mainly be using this for GBA. The Origin 8 should work fine with that Legacy 16 Dongle and give you your buttons. Sorry I sound so confusing. I definitely want it though because I think I can use it with my Consolized GBA using the Legacy 16 Dongle. I wish I knew for sure if they worked together. Can you comment on receiver fitment in your AVS? I bought a pair of Origin8 when they first came out for my RetroUSB AVS and the receivers literally fall out when you put a cart in the AVS. The connection is super loose. The internet is full of similar comments. I wrote retro-bit and they wouldn't admit to anything being wrong and offered no solutions. An original NES wired controller fits lit a glove in the same port, while neither of my Origin8 receivers fit well at all. I see in this review on your boxes they say "v2 receivers" and I want to know how well these receivers fit in your AVS. I'm betting they finally fixed the loose receiver for v2. If so, I want to pawn off my old ones for new ones. Amazon purchase?
