- STING - bürgerlich Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner - gehört zu den wenigen heute noch aktiven Pop-Superstars der 1980er Jahre.
Geboren am 5. Oktober 1951 als Sohn eines Milchmanns verbrachte Sting seine Jugend in Wallsend in der englischen Provinz. Anfang der 1970er Jahre absolvierte er eine Ausbildung zum Lehrer für Englisch und Musik. 1977 gründete Sting mit Stewart Copeland und Andy Summers in der Zeit der britischen New Wave die Band The Police. Das Konzept, das Sting für The Police ausrief: konventionell geschriebene Songs, gespielt mit zwei damals wichtigen Elementen der Popmusik: Tempo und Reggae. Dazu die sehr individuelle Stimme von Sting und seine Fähigkeit, eingängige Songs zu komponieren.
Der Rest ist Geschichte und nicht nur die von Sting. ’Roxanne’, ’Message In A Bottle’, ’Every Breath You Take’ u.v.m. waren weltweite Nr. 1 Hits und katapultierten Sting und The Police in die erste Liga der Popmusik. Für Sting folgte die unvermeidliche Solokarriere mit Hits wie ‘Englishman In New York’, ‘Fragile’ und ‘Fields Of Gold’. Sting hat bis heute alles: Talent, gutes Aussehen. Präsenz, Eloquenz und Souveränität in allen Lebenslagen.
Im Zentrum des Portraits steht ein ausführliches Exklusivinterview mit Sting, in dem er über die vielen Stationen seines Lebens erzählt. The Police als Superstars der 1980er Jahre und Stings Solokarriere. Sting hat sich Gedanken um seine Zukunft gemacht und beschlossen, unnötigen Ballast abzuwerfen. Sting will sich für den Rest seines Lebens nur noch mit den für ihn wichtigen Dingen beschäftigen. Seinen Lebensrhythmus beschreibt Sting mit “Wandern und Träumen” - eine Erinnerung an die Jugend, als Sting jeden Tag vor Sonnenaufgang mit dem Vater die Milch in seiner Kleinstadt verteilte. Das Portrait enthält außer dem zentralen Interview mit Sting ergänzende Statements zu den verschiedenen Stationen seiner Karriere, u.a von Stewart Copeland, Dominic Miller, Eberhard & Stefanie Schoener, Jools Holland, Phil Sutcliffe, John Watts und Rhani Krija. Und natürlich werden die vielen Hits von The Police & Sting im Film zu sehen und zu hören sein.

Very interesting and good documentation. Sting and Police were excellent and great musicians. Sting's voice is unique. He can play and sing all: Rock, Jazz, Classic.
His 1985 tour was amazing. I was ten then. I wish I could have seen him and the band in Paris. "I burn for you" with Kirkland and Marsalis is the best live performance I have ever heard.

Sting was never as good beyond The Police. There must have been a certain fusion to the talents of the trio. Their success was not simply based on Sting's obvious prowess as a songwriter.

@@stretch54 A few are ok, but I just like the chemistry of the Police better. I mean no disrespect to Sting. Like I said, the man is tremendously talented. It's just that his solo stuff isn't for me, that's all. My opinion means nothing in the grand scheme.

The most important element is surprise? But covertly, he has toured for the last 40 years under the guise of a solo artiste selling concert tickets by performing the very same polite material. So he wants the best of both worlds but he can’t reasonably hold the middle ground by expressing his desire to sway towards an element of surprise only to do something entirely different which is neither original nor surprising. Merely hypocritical
I loved The Police and I understand why he left and did his own thing. But I couldn’t get into his solo work. Stewart’s drumming and Andy’s guitar were perfection. His solo work just lacked their touch and was a downgrade for me.
