  • Prince William has paid tribute to the Windrush generation at the unveiling of a new statue to commemorate those who came to England from the Caribbean after the late 1940s.
The Duke of Cambridge said "every part of British life is better" because of the Windrush generation, but also acknowledged the future "they sought and deserved has yet to come to pass".

They was glad to come here. I feel more for our soldiers who fought and died for our country and never got the chance to live in the country they fought for.

This is the modern day narrative that we are all supposed to buy into; that the Windrush brought all these selfless people who just wanted to help Britain rebuild itself after the war. Theres not an ounce of truth in it. The truth is the situation in the Caribbean was rather dire in terms of mass unemployment and a rapidly rising birth rate, and the authorities there were worried about civil unrest. They approached Britain , and Britain felt an obligation to help.

I'm a British national of part-Baltic origin. Can someone inform me of the location in London of a similar statue, unveiled with comparable fanfare and royal presence, to Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians who came to Britain shortly after WW2? They displayed a good work ethic, integrated well and had a negligible crime rate. If the West Indians get a statue, the Balts surely have one too, right?

Which is why the Labour government (in 1948) opened the door to people from the colonies and offered them right of entry and residency. Churchill himself expressed concern at the amount of Brits going to start a new life in Australia and Canada, and that it left us with 1.3 million jobs unfilled.
