She explains that she won't join them in the costume contest until they see her as a person, and not a color. From 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun,' season 1, episode 6 of mixed-ish. "You only think I'm different because you won't talk to the rest of them." Yes.. Well said.
“You’re not like other black people” is something I heard way too often back when I was in school.
Same
Me too
Same girl same. That and "you don't act black"
Same, you won’t believe the things people have said to me.
“You’re not like the other ones, you’re...smarter”
It’s pretty messed up but I try to use that as a opportunity to teach and educate people who say things like that
😳rly, thats messd up.
That actress playing young Bo is perfectly cast. She cracks me up in EVERY episode!
Alex Starks I have never agreed with a comment so much before this
@Alex Starks I think that's due to the fact that the "fully" Black girls, who are more than likely complexions darker, are fighting their own insecurities. They probably feel that girls like Bo have it a lot easier due their lighter skin tones. I think one of the points of the show is to expound on the fact that they actually don't. They are faced with their own set of issues/ insecurities that I believe the show handles gracefully in it's telling/ execution.
@@yoalndawhitaker4539 Colorism is not an insecurity. Its literally related to racism. I guess pointing out racism is an insecurity too.
Alex Starks sorry but no one is expecting mixed ppl to stick up for fully black girls. Because in reality they don’t actually no one really does sooooooo
Alex Starks privilege for mixed ppl not only when white passing what are you even talking about. Lightskin black, mixed ppl have some type of privilege compared to darker skin ppl may not be white privilege but there is some & THATS reality
Even as a child, I can remember being the "Black Girl" for certain projects when I attended a school that was majority white in the early 90's. These skits bring back some old wounds that I thought healed. Wow!
BUTLERU same! Except it was the 80’s and I was the Asian one! I’m having to think hard about what being mixed means again because no one wanted to talk about it when I was trying to figure it out in the 80’s and 90’s.
@@mrs.castle8432 I agree. It's almost like the elephant in the room, but people pretended like it didn't exist. Also, it shows that people can be racist without knowing that they are a racist. These shows are necessary, and I'm glad people are talking about it. Hopefully, people will have a better understanding without being so judgmental. Happy New Year 🎉

On behalf of the lightskins, we don't claim her! (and girl, if she ain't for the WHOLE black community then drop her, u deserve better
@@leah4701 and um what the heck? How is she not apart of lightskins just because she can’t tell she’s being used. We should encourage her to value herself more instead of saying “we don’t claim her”. Also as a light skinned girl you don’t speak on behalf of me
My best friend is lightskin and I know for a fact if she met people like that she'd be ready to throw hands. Also you can't be letting your friend get manipulated so easily. Help her find the right path and to stop being their token black friend. If they don't see her color then they don't see her.
Good for her ... leveraging her higher percentage (or at least, phenotypic expression) of European DNA to get ahead. If you're a tawny creature in a savanna environment, you blend in. You don't stick with the more starkly colored creatures out of a sense of social obligation.
If you think change is coming because Derek Chauvin was prosecuted you celebrated prematurely. The White Supremacists have the majority among rank and file police and the rank and file military. I don't blame your friend for taking the path of least resistance, and I certainly don't think good survival instincts equate to "clowing". Hell, if I'd been born extremely tall and athletic I'd play in the NBA too. I wouldn't refuse to do so out of a sense of solidarity with short people.

I cannot explain how this resonates with me. As a black woman who is not mixed. But simply comes from a different country. I get this from my own race and from those who aren't. Just because I am agreeable to yo.. does not give you the right to compare me and place me above another black woman. They may have a different upbringing from me, values, and personality. But if you take the time to get to know each of them as a human being, you will get to see they have a whole soul that has nothing to do to with body or the skin attached to it. I get it - there are some common traits you find distasteful about my whole race, so can be said about yours. This show brings so much conversation about colorism and race bias in the open and shows you a first-person view on how it feels. I'm grateful that I am alive in it's generation. Even with this trump white supremacy madness.
Oh, lord, not a white supremacist! LOL. People compare each other all the time, it's not racist to compare. As you said, you've even had black people compare you to other black people. We need to stop being so sensitive.
I get what you mean. I've been told almost the same thing by other people who specializes with people on the spectrum.
Granted half of it is true, however there's always a diamond in the rough.
@@anonymousperson1327 did you read? when they make the comparison it is "you're so different from all the other black girls" and "i wish black girls were more like you" without even taking the time to get to know them, and deciding on them based solely on the color of their skin and any prejudices a person has against black people. It's not a sensitivity issue, It's a racism issue.
That’s guaranteed to happen to black people in in predominantly white spaces.

I've been told, "Oh but no you, you're different from the others"
They probably meant it as a diss.
I was the opposite. One of the only black ppl in my school. I suddenly became the voice/face of all black people and I would have to remind them that if I was into something atm then it didn't mean that every black person was into it as well, or if I did my hair a certain way then it didn't mean that it was the latest black trend.
I hope that people remember that the facts of life did an episode in the 2nd or 3rd season that focussed on Tootie being the only black girl.
@Little Dee me too.
Haven’t seen this before but I’m definitely going to now! Being mixed race white ppl always felt comfortable telling me things or asking me things they wouldn’t have asked someone full black it always hurt me and shocked me.
I remember one Halloween my friends and I planned on going as Disney Princesses and everyone thought/wanted me to be Tiana and I really just wanted to be Mulan
I remember when we had a Star Wars fancy dress party in church and I wanted to be Princess Leia, but people thought it was a crazy idea because I'm black.
If you were Mulan it wouldn’t be fair because white people aren’t allowed to be/play POC characters without it being called cultural appropriation or whitewashing and it should be the same both ways.
I truly don't got this whole cultural appropriation thing. People have been training cultures for thousands of years and never had a problem with it. All of a sudden, some people wake up and decide you shouldn't do it anymore because it is "offensive". If you want to dress like a person from another culture or learn their traditions, I don't see a problem with it. I think it is something that should be celebrated because of the fact that a person from another country of culture values yours and wants to learn and be part of it.
Um for the comments triggered by CA, calm down. Nobody mentioned it... but the ignorance regarding this topic is clear, I can't even get into explaining. Anyway, the main comments only point was that people assumed they wanted to be the only black princess when that might not reflect their personality or likes (no shade to tiana ofc).
@@Sam-nz3vj Mulan is Chinese and that's not white . But besides that it would be the best if people of all races could cosplay as any charecter despite their race.
It's a shame that some people get mad when white people cosplay poc charecters but if we don't allow poc people to cosplay outside of their race we'll only make the issue bigger.
So instead we should fight for white people to be able to play poc charecters instead of putting poc people down.
Because if we don't let poc people cosplay outside of their race too we will have the same problem.
I was "Black on the outside, white on the inside".
I still get " you don't look like you sound."
That was my entire childhood. But now I know how to pull a switch. I can "talk black" now.
I used to get that "You don't look like you sound" but in reverse, in college. I look the most like an Arab, but I speak English fluently. Not many people know that one of my parents was born and raised in the United States. I also have to tell people over here that the fair haired, blue-eyed woman is actually my mother. 😭
Honestly, I get it. I think there should be a conversation around how "blackness" is defined as a collection of stereotypical character traits and behaviors.
Black people keep telling everyone that they are NOT a monolith, but very few people take the time to see it for themselves.
Yup as a mixed girl unfortunately im always the “token” in relationships with white friends .

Grace x there’s no such thing as a fully black girl. Unless a dna test proves she’s 100 percent African.
Alicia Pink black and African are not synonymous. There are white Africans that are born and raised in south Africa.
I believe the commentator meant full black as in a person who has black parents/grandparents... or has no RECENT mixture in their bloodline.
Alicia Pink that wasn’t my point
Guilda Boots lol a dna test of a white South African/Namibian/ Zimbabwean would never say 100% African and you know that very well. North Africans are not Europeans either hence why their DNA is distinct from them but I’ve also never seen a 100% North African dna result because that area was unfortunately invaded too many times. Still fortunately there are 100% Africans all over the continent.
Why is it that you think the lighter girl isnt fully black? Is it because every black person looks the same? Looks like I've been lied to. Black people are not the most diverse
Why is she on skates at school? I would give her a dahmerit!

ehh, I was the token white kid in my school, 75% Hispanic, 20% African American, the rest white or Asian and my school had over 5000 kids in my high school. Lets just say, in a weird way I get this show sometimes.
Wolf Dreamer I understand you I’m the only black kid in an all Hispanic school like 1% not even 1% like there’s only five or 20 not even 20 less than 20 black kids I see
This is fascinating, neighborhood are so segregated now as they’re ever been.
For example, Little Rock high school, though they were forced to desegregate, they still managed to have self segregation. Mostly all the white kids are in the advanced placement classes on a different floor. While the black kids are in remedial classes on the lower floors.

Even from the context of The Facts of Life it is sad... They had Tootie as token diversity. The joke was on the producers considering that it is Kim Fields who ended up as the most successful post the show though.
Just what I thought! The Mixed-ish thing was just an excuse to not show BLACK actors and actresses. Here we go again, the light skinned saviour and representative to the black community. It's all done in deliberately. The light skinned actor standing up for black rights just an strategy to silence the ones who speak up against colorism in media. What's next, a light skinned singer singing about dark skinned girls?? Oh wait!
Bioko Malabo have you watched the show, there are a lot of black kids and adults in this show. First of all it’s called mixed ish, this is a show for mixed people.
@@Embraceyourcurls24 'this is a show for mixed people' you say. Well, I'm not mixed, not going to watch it, whites are not going to watch it , asians are not going to watch it... If the show is aimed at a certain ethnic group only as you clearly suggest, maybe that's why the ratings a so low.
Bioko Malabo lol it’s not low, the cast just celebrated being able to make a second season ✌🏼. Everybody hates Chris was aimed at blacks people and every other show with a black family. Get over yourself. This is representation for mix kids and what we go through.
@@Embraceyourcurls24 Typical! Mixed kids are over exposed in American media. That's my point! The media does not want to give that chance to black children or families and yes! The ratings are low, the aim of these mixed shows is to brainwash folks that's why they keep shoving them down our throats ! They don't have Friends numbers , do they? Look at the ratings of the current white sitcoms, that's what I'm talking about.
These type of shows will never succeed in and out of America. I recall reading an article about the flop of 'Empire' in Europe and they were trying to say it was down to racism as if the show was any good, now black folks are not watching it. "This is a representation of mix kids " you said. Almost EVERY sitcom aimed at BLACK folks has MIXED KIDS due to the colourism culture!! 'My wife and kids' 'The cosby show' 'The Fresh Prince' ' Black-ish' 'Grown-ish' and many more! Therefore your statement is ridiculous.
You can keep denying colourism in the entertainment industry but don't come crying when your mixed idols are ignored by Americans. Because this is a caste system, they constantly place them above blacks but they will always be below whites in America and you know it. Again, look at the ratings of the current white sitcoms.
Bioko Malabo now you sound stupid, those shoes are not mix representation. Representation is showing parents of two different races raising a family. Those shows are not mix representation, they all played black kids not mixed. As I said, get over yourself. This is a white dominated country, why would they put y’all on top with them. Black people tell us to get our own spaces and then we do. Now it’s still a problem. Y’all asses will never be satisfied. I can name so many shows that had a all black family.
