  • Are the Seymour Duncan SPB-4 Steve Harris signature a worthy upgrade if you have Fender stock pickups on your Precision bass? The Fender stock pickups are from a Made in Mexico Duff McKagan signature bass. Let me know. Also, tell me which other comparisons you would like to see and I'll do my best!

    Another helpful video. The SH is noticeably louder clearer when you play fast it's very clear. Stock is damn close in some test but in in all the SH is the better pick up. It's like the stock version on steroids imo.

    I bought a P bass from my guitarist when the pandemic hit. He put a set of the Steve Harris SPB4 pickups in it and I love it. I got a great price for the bass too!

    This is a really useful comparison. The SDs make a big impression initially, but the longer I listened the more I preferred the stock Fenders. They seem more balanced across the set. The SDs by contrast seem to emphasise the lowest and highest strings at the expense of the middle pair. Of course, this may seem like an advantage if you're looking to cop Steve Harris's tone. The SDs's clarity was also apparent when playing above the 12th fret.
    Using the Harris signature Tech 21 rig exaggerated the differences.

    I have the SPB-4 A little thicker with much better midrange. The stock Fenders are good. They may have a little more treble and high mids but when you run them with the tone wide open they are thinner. This is why Steve wanted this pickup. He runs his pickup right into the jack and needs a slightly overwound pickup.

    SPB4 sounds good, and is definitely thicker, but tbh, I think I like the stock more. I've thought about this alot with my Player P. I like the idea of trying some different pickups, but ultimately, there is nothing about the stock pickup I don't like. Honestly, with a pick and the the tone dialed back just a touch, it gets thick and grindy in a way that I love.

    bella deja-vu!
    ho sentito ilo video dalle casse Bose del pc e l'SPB-4 mi sembra più pieno, con outuput maggiore e (credo) medio basse.
    mi piacerebbe un confronto con una distorsione un po' più spinta, picchiando più o meno forte, sia con le dita che con il plettro (dico questo perché con la distorsione vengono fuori cose che normalomente non si sentono)

    • @OliverTobyn
      @OliverTobyn  Před 3 lety

      Sì, il Fender è abbastanza neutro a livello di risposta di frequenze e infatti mi trovo a doverlo equalizzare molto per ottenere i suoni che mi piacciono. Gli SPB-4 sono più cicciotti sulle basse e hanno più spinta sulle medio alte.
      In effetti si, magari proverò ad usare più overdrive e distorsione nei futuri video, già col preamp che ho usato emerge qualcosa in più

    Steve harris uses flatwound strings. I think these pickups were meant to be played with flatwound to get a brighter sound out of the dull flatwound sound. It's for people who prefer the comfort of the flatwound but want more treble imo.

    • @OliverTobyn
      @OliverTobyn  Před rokem +2

      I've used them also with the signature flatwound strings, I feel the pickup has a lot of midrange both upper and lower, and maybe a hint of brightness.
      They are great pick-up even with roundwound strings but I feel that the true Harris tone comes out when you pair it with the SH1 preamp, that's where the brightness really emerges

    • @mirak63
      @mirak63 Před 7 měsíci

      The Steve Harris signature flats are not dull because they have a heavy gauge.
      They do sound dead quickly though but you can revive them with that technique czcams.com/video/s8OYeN9mAL4/video.html
