I have picked up side projects when I wanted to develop a skill, or build out my portfolio, with things I was not able to work on in my current job role.

How do you select the scope of your side projects? I tend to have several giant ones going for long periods of time and I’ve learned so much from them, but I don’t have as many finished products. I’ve thought of taking 6 months to do 1-2 small projects per month (keeping in mind my schedule how tiny these projects would be). This might let me explore more directions and end with several nice small packages to show. Though, I worry I’d feel more flustered and aimless.
