Yup the irony is a z pinch device DOES require powerful magnetic fields, usually supplied by a pulsed electromagnet. I doubt it could create stable power generation level fusion as the power needed for a "neutrons as the goal" version was pretty extreme. Several KW of power in for excitation and cooling for maybe 100mW yes miliwatts worth of neutrons out. Also a power generation z pinch machine would get dangerously radioactive very quickly 😂

The simplest fusion device is the neutron generator used in rusdian nuclear devices. It literally is deuterium filled tube with a semiconductive zirconium tritride cathode and a central anode pin. The HV pulse accelerates the deuterium ions into the target. Its used for neutron generation. It does not use magnets at all. A z pinch device does by very definition use a very powerful pulsed electromagnet, and they can make enough neutrons to do a lot of fun things with besides starting a chain reaction.

Pretty much every other fusion technology under trial "does not use magnets" - they use electromagnets.

@ic7481 yup, you are 100% right. Anything designed to make sustained power must use a powerful magnet, usually a superconducting electromagnet
