His mother is South African. Not "African". And even calling her South African isn't specific enough. We have 11 official languages, if which 9 are fully African.
There is no one such thing as "African". People use it as a designation in the US because of the horrific history of slavery. Records of where slaves were taken from were virtually almost never kept, so AA peoples' ethnic identities have literally been erased. That is the only reason the term "African" American was needed. More recent immigrants, from what I understand, will refer to themselves as where they are actually from, eg., Nigerian American, Somali American, etc.

Trevor better get a pass, he's an actual African. Unlike pretty much any black people in the US, they're Americans, period. To be an African American you would need to have dual citizenship.
