Part 1 Sewing a Structured NCW With No Interfacing

  • In this video I'll be showing you how I switched the pattern up a bit to make my card slots out of waterproof canvas. By doing this, you don't have to use interfacing because the canvas is thick. I LOVE the NCW but hate the card slot part of it. Pros are: less prep work (you don't have to cut out interfacing or adhere it to your fabric), you don't have to use interfacing which is an added cost. Cons are: custom wallets (if you are making a custom wallet, you can't find waterproof canvas in lots of prints. So you wouldn't be able to make the card slots out of a custom print. They would be a solid color) Although, www.fabricwholesaledirect.com does have some waterproof canvas in prints. Just not a lot to choose from. My suggestion for custom wallets would be to make the exterior flap out of your custom print and interface that part only. Then continue with vinyl on your exterior body and waterproof canvas for the inside.
    Dimensions for the card slots:
    Use two of the card slot backing piece that comes with the pattern
    Card slot #1 is 8 x 8
    Card slot #2 is 7 x 8
    Card slot #3 is 6 x 8
    Waterproof canvas can be purchased from Amazon or at Fabric Wholesale Direct www.fwd.com.
    The vinyl I used in the video was from Walmart.
    Hardware was from Lauren over at www.moremekow.com
    My machine is a Juki du1181n. I would recommend purchasing it from www.sunny-sewing-machines.mysh...

    Ren, I'm about to make an NCW for the first time in a couple of years, so I watched a few of your videos for a refresher. Thank you so much for your genius hacks. I miss your videos so much. I used to watch them immediately after you posted them. Please consider doing some more in the future. By the way, because of you, I figured out how to do the card slots using my embroidery machine.....nice straight lines! Yayyyyyy!!!

    Thank you so much for sharing. I've been holding off making the NCW because I really wanted to use the WPC for the interior, but was afraid of the potential bulk. Now I know what I'll be doing this coming Sunday afternoon! Also love that you pay attention to the sewing detail and don't try to sew at 1000mph. I'm a little too OCD. Thanks again!

    oh I like this way Ren, great ideal a lot easier than measuring out and folding making usre its all straight, but does it add bulk to the slots ? I would like to see a double zipper pocket for this, could you please do one of those thanks

    • @renpuffinberger6664
      @renpuffinberger6664  Před 4 lety +4

      Actually it doesn’t add bulk at all. That’s why I like it. Your not using interfacing, so the little bit of bulk helps it to be sturdy. I’ve never done the double zipper. I’ll give it a try and make a video when I’ve figured it out lol

      Thank you! I bought my Juki machine from Gold Star Tool. There is also a place in Chicago that sells them. I’ve heard a a lot of mixed reviews about Gold Star. But personally I didn’t have any problems with them. I think the place in Chicago’s called Steve’s Sewing Machines. I could be wrong. My husband went there without me to surprise me with it for Chrismas last year so I didn’t actually see the place but he said we’d definitely go back if I needed any other machines. I’ll ask my husband what the name is and get back with you.

    I watched your video today about the uninterfaced NCW. When you were doing the flap - did you use the template or did you change it? It looked bigger than the template. Also, which side of the waterproof canvas is the right side?

    • @renpuffinberger6664
      @renpuffinberger6664  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey there. I add an inch to my flaps when I make them. They snap a little looser this way and gives me more room for my stuff. Lol. The right side of the waterproof canvas is the fabric feeling side. The wrong side is the rubbery feeling side.

    • @renpuffinberger6664
      @renpuffinberger6664  Před 3 lety

      My domestic sews through waterproof canvas with no problem and vinyl with my Teflon foot attached. The only issues I have are sewing the guts in at the end. That’s a lot of layers to sew through. The walking foot does help. I’ve never used the Juki TI 2010Q so I cant say if it’ll work or not. My opinion would be to just give it a go and see what happens. Good luck!

      The Ottertex® waterproof canvas fabric is 61/62” wide, 100% polyester and approximately 0.55 mm thick.
      I copy and pasted that from www.fabricwholesaledirect.com website under their waterproof canvas description. That’s where I purchase mine from. I’ve also bought some from Walmart. It isn’t as thick but works just the same in my opinion.
