Whatever Happened to NBA TV'S 'The Starters'?

- Bloopers have always been a part of basketball. But it wasn’t until the release of the NBA’S 1989 direct-to-video release ‘Dazzling Dunks and Basketball Bloopers’ that in-game fails became almost as popular as spectacular highlights.
However, despite the popularity of the lighter side of the game of basketball, it wouldn’t been until the early 2010s that the NBA would produce a regular program that revolved around celebrating the lighter side of the league with ‘The Starter’. The show covered the game from a fan’s perspective and soon established a cult following. Then… it seemed to just disappear, leaving a significant hole in the basketball world.

Between 2013 and 2015 I watched this show all the time. It was unique and entertaining and kept me up with what was going on in the league. Sad to hear that it’s not on anymore.

I really enjoy watching/listening to these guys. All other NBA shows seem to go the same way: former players talking about how much better their day was, or journalists screaming hot takes at max volume.
Normal conversations about basketball while cracking some jokes? Great.

When I was young, I was always watching this show in NBA TV every morning just to catch up with the games that I missed to watch. This was a great show
Since I live in the Philippines, the Starters has always been played on NBA TV around 5 or 6 AM which made them my Morning Show when preparing to go to School. This video brought me a good closure as well as nostalgia because I stopped watching TV when ours got too old and the rise of streaming started.
Same! It’s a daily dose of NBA before going to school. Kinda remember High school days and looking up here if they’re still around.
Easily the best show about the NBA, at least for me. They are fans more and then media members and that made the show relatable. They legit love the game. Still enjoy their show No Dunks Inc.

The starters was better than most current nba shows. No bulshit hot takes and fake trade rumours. Much better than anything from Skip Bayless or Stephen A
The trade deadline story on espn was “what should have happened that didn’t during the trade deadline”
Their consistent content regardelss of the platform is remarkable and commendable. They have been extremely successful at making their own path with their own style and have kept it going for over 18 years now.
They are a massive success and should be celebrated for offering a different perspective on NBA content!

This show is what got me into the NBA! I used to watch it every morning while eating breakfast. I still miss it! None of the other nba shows are as funny, relatable, and compact as this one. I had all of the merch and would do anything to have it back!

The Starters was my favourite show when it was on. I still listen to the no dunks podcast every now and then but it’s obviously not the same. Hope the show comes back one day

I am from Germany and they got me into NBA with the Starters. I watched it every day as a ritual. Really miss it. I sometimes listen to No Dunks, but it isn't the same unfortunately. Still love those guys!

I STILL miss The Starters! My favorite episode was when Trey Kerby interviewed Robin Lopez dressed as Batman's twink Robin wearing a Sideshow Bob wig! It was hilariously brilliant! I read Trey met his untimely demise in a penile pump explosion. Death comes for us all.

What killed this show is social media. For example, On a Tuesday night show they would talk about what happened on Monday night, but what happens if you’ve already watched the games, watched ESPN talk about it all day, and been on social media where it’s getting discussed 24hours a day, why exactly would I need to watch the starters? So for a segment like ‘the meme team’ or the ‘bloopers of the week’ I’ve already seen those clips over and over by the time I watch the show.
I wouldn't deny that but from the reported reason why they cancelled the starters is because the NBA tv/turner/ at&t is losing money, but they still kept on supporting wnba which is the reason why they're losing so much money in the first place.

As an 80s/early 90s kid, I feel like the Starters were the modern version of the “inside stuff.” And I loved them for that. Basketball is meant to be fun as well as serious. There’s room for both!

When I got back into NBA basketball in 2016, this show was my daily window into the league. A real shame it died, I hate having to rely on random tik tok accounts to upload short snippets of stolen analysis videos.

What better way to get your basketball entertainment than with a bunch of guys that havent been in High School Varsity team on any sport... they look like the guys thats too good in music class... but yeah I watched them and even saw when they were let go... Man I miss the starters, nodunks is good but wish the NBA kept them going instead of supporting the wnba which they were losing money on.
I always love to watch them every pregame days on NBA TV. But it seems like they're shadowed by the more popular "Inside the NBA" somewhat when it comes to entertainment.
Everyone can understand that they are not the most popular and maybe ratings are getting low. But from what ive read the nba cancelled them cause of financial issues and thats fine and all... until you realize that they wanted to cut some expenses but still left the wnba running. If the nba really want some more cash they should throw their money drainer named the wnba.
