    I should've said Lynx and Sweet got bored easily.... in other words, they were super smart. Not a good idea having a beginner trying to teach herself something on them 🙅‍♀🤣

    Daniel.....your story about barrel racing was great! And by starting the way you did may have been tough but not a bad thing. Every rider is develooed by experience and every horse teaches us something! You learned a lot and from what I have seen of your videos barrel racing on Czar and your sorrel horse. You are doing just fine. We can learn from experience, and tweek what we learn from others to work; as it applies to what horse etc being trained. You will never quit learning! That is " the horsemanship" journey" for every rider no matter what kind of riding they do. What works for one horse may not work for another.....recognizing that is what makes a good trainer!

  • @WhittleDude
    @WhittleDude Před rokem +3

    This the first video I've watched. True horsemanship. I like to see people who know how to "Speak Horse". By that I mean you know what horses are, how the act and react to the world around them. You are clearly the alpha/leader and know how to communicate that to the horse. Every horse has their own personality, but at the end of the day you are their alpha/leader and they know it. Its not easy, but easy is boring and not fun. I'd rather have a challenge, have to work both my brain and body. Its hard work, exciting at times and fun. Great horsemanship.

  • @donnac.1609
    @donnac.1609 Před rokem +2

    I just had to watch this twice....on my phone than stream on my tv! Johnny is so typical in so many ways. As a stud, does not have his mind in the center so to speak! Once he does I think Hensen will be able to get him in balance. He is built to do most anything....and I think Hensen has some surprises coming. The Ranch bred colt is equally nice, just hard to see thru the color. He too has promise to do most anything! Trainers work hard to bring the best out of each one and every one is different. A 90 day stint of training is a good start but no horse is near finished at 90 days! Getting the horse back for more training is such a good move!

  • @tracyjohnson5023
    @tracyjohnson5023 Před rokem +2

    My 2 cents worth is that trainer is great with a stallion. He definitely has a great feel for necessary correction versus unnecessary roughness.
    I've had horses for 57 years and have figured out most people that handle and train stallions should not. I can handle horses and have ridden colts and stallions, but definitely don't have what it takes to be as good as I should with them. So I don't. Such a fine line between too much and not enough.
    The ones that are the best with stallions are usually the first to say he'd make a better gelding. They know that to remain a breeding stallion, they should be the best of their breed. Too bad many owners don't listen.

    Johnny is a good looking stallion. His dished face and delicate features denote strong Arab blood in there somewhere. Johnny is not a forward horse and is what I call lazy horse which in itself is not a bad thing when they are young. He may develop into a great all around horse.

    Your story about catching the barrel racing bug reminded me of wanting to learn to decoy for French Ring Sport practices, except there were no women, only men who wore the bite suit. But what an adrenaline rush to have a huge working line dog (the canine equal to a cow bred horse) run at you and trying to pull your leg back so the dog grabs the suit, I still got bruises, those dogs hit like freight trains. The last month I've been working with my new dog, she's a Belgian Malinois. I would like to get her Brevet qualification in French Ring Sport, look it up, the dogs are amazing, but it depends on Maxi's natural prey drive inclination which is just starting to show itself.

      @@PaintedDesertRanch Yes!! I adopted Maxi from a shelter 5 weeks ago, so many Malinois end up in shelters because they have too much drive for a person who doesn't have the time to work and train them properly. I had been looking for over 6 months, but I've wanted a Belgian Malinois for many years.

    Your PDR Halter looks good on Johnny the Bay Stallion. Looks good also on Flicka. Thanks for your Barrel Racing story Danielle. Does Henson ever use a 3 piece snaffle bit on the colts or just the tradional normal 2 piece snaffle bits?

    • @PaintedDesertRanch
      @PaintedDesertRanch  Před rokem +2

      He will use a variety of bits- all depending on what the horse needs. Sometimes he will stay in a halter for a while like he did with Flicka and sometimes he’ll go to a harsher bit much faster if the horse is super stiff then bring it back down and try a snaffle again… always depending on how the horse responds… ideally, it really shouldn’t matter what is in the horse’s mouth really. Dibs, for example, can work in anything!
