  • Welcome to this Intro to the Scandinavian Portuguese Variation, a sharp option coming out of the Modern Scandinavian coming from the moves 1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Nf6 3. d4 Bg4!
3...Bg4! ignores being a pawn down as well as the threat of Bb4+ and hits the queen with tempo. In this intro we venture into the mainline which goes into something called the Portuguese Gambit and it gets a bit crazy. Still not sure if I want to see this line on the board, but it would be fun. :) Hope you enjoy.

Thx Stacia. Great stuff out there. I was analysing the complex Nf6 Scandi and then caught your vidéo. The Portuguese Gambit is à cool choice between the dangerousJadoul Gambit ( played by Carlsen ) and the venimous Icelandic Gambit ! Nice vidéo, il love the way you comment this line ! U hav à new sub !

I'm glad it was helpful and glad to have a new sub! Thanks and enjoy playing the Nf6 Scandi! I no longer have it as my main weapon but that means it is now a secret weapon. hehe :)

Thanks, me too although I must admit this is my placeholder opening and I do intend to play 1. e4 e5 at some point this year. Shooting for April 1st so far.

Thanks for sharing this variation. I need to play a bit sharper myself. As a Scandi player myself, maybe I'll give this a try.

interesting video - one observation though - none of my opponents ever play d4 with the pawn on move 3. Also castling king side looks safer if you can find the time to move the f bishop of its start square?

Delightful and honest. For me, as a beginner for years now, haha you point the way toward adventure and after all its only a game. Im just now crashing and burning learning Scandinavian and Icelandic. Thanks for taking the time to share it.

So where are you going after 4.f3 Bf5 5.g4 - g6? to keep B on nice diagonal or d7 or c8 in order to keep an eye on e6 ? Engines show 5..Bg6 as best

Thanks for watching! And I would say yes. I think as you get stronger at chess you are less scared of weird pawn structures bc there is often also increased piece activity and initiative which can offset the structural defects. But it depends on each position if that activity is enough or not. Isn't chess great? :)

Is the Portuguese variation still possible if white plays 3. Nc3?

      No,that will transform to Alekhine.
      It's like
      1.e4 Nf6
      2.Nc3 d5
      3.exd5
      Or
      1.e4 d5
      2.exd5 Nf6
      3.Nc3
