Here's what I learned from this, since I also do YT and Twitch. You gotta put in the work if you want your name out there. Put the content out as much as you can and when you get some viewership you better capitalize on it. Being a content creator needs a lot of luck, but it also needs hardwork. If you do not have the drive to even put out consistent content, don't even bother to try. Taking huge breaks like 2-3 years apart is way too long to keep the content coming. Put your name out there even if nothing gets views. As an FGC content maker, what I've realized is like Bri said, we're so niche in the gaming sphere. Overall, it's just down to luck, tenacity, and consistency.
Thank you for the tips for us regarding this subject Brian. We appreciate you a lot.

One of the biggest things people dont often talk about is the leverage you wield on youtube as opposed to streaming. Streaming is 1:1 so 1 hour in is 1 hour out for content, but with youtube you can put in 10 hours of work and get hundreds or even thousands of hours of watch time that make your growth explode, the better your content the higher your ratio of leverage on the youtube algorithm.

Something to note is that not everyone is a "doer". And just because you're a top competitive sponsored player, doesn't mean you are exactly interesting to watch or even have that sort of drive and ambition to create content. Some people are just complacent with competing and not portraying their personalities out into the world, and that's perfectly fine. Not everyone wants to be a leader. But obviously call out the people that say they want to be a content creator but don't have any drive to do the work, sometimes people need a push in the right direction. IMO

That discussion on clip channels bringing in people who have no idea who you are is how I became a regular viewer. Got recommended a few clips, watched them, and then when I got recommended a video from your main channel I had an idea of who you were and decided to stick around. Been watching you pretty regularly ever since. so at least for me your clip methodology worked to get a pretty regular viewer. But again I'm mostly a CZcams viewer, I've popped by the stream once or twice but streaming content is just not something I have the time to sit down to watch when its live. It's a really interesting discussion point to listen to and get an idea of how the creator side of the industry works.

I feel like the "How to grow" goes similar to the "Just pick a top tier" discussion, you want to win? Pick a top tier and put in the hours. Want to grow? Play the most popular games and put in the hours. At the end of the day chasing the top tiers have greater potential, if you choose a low tier (or in this analogy, a specific niche) you will have to put in more work to match other's result, and even then you will have to accept the limitations of your choice.

My two cents to add: I agree on consistency plays a huge role, but another important factor when it comes to content is the "Value." What Values can you offer and bring to other people? You, the content creator need to bring value(s) and if you nail that part, You can always find an audience, You can grow that audience, and have newer audiences come in, and essentially they will watch your content regardless. Some say that Quality over Quantity or vice versa is important, but if you don't bring in that "Value," then none of it will matter. And it becomes harder to grow etc etc.
    Take are Brian!

I have a 5,000,000 view video on my channel (not an original creation and not FGC related, it's just a clip from The Boondocks). It was stagnant at 200k views for literally 9 years (2011-2020) and 2 viewer spikes happened in a span of a few months growing it to several million. It's an 11 second clip and it's responsible for 2.5k out of my total 2.9k subscribers.
Which is to say Brian is right, youtube gives creators 24/7 advertising and does all the numbers, while twitch busking is a fool's errand without an existing solid viewer base. My $20 copy of Vegas from humble bundle has been doing the heavy lifting for all my video editing nowadays. Most of my longest time to edit videos are passion projects with no views, whereas I found that my 30 second, low-effort, whack-ass shorts generate a few thousand viewers just because I tagged them with broad topics like anime or gaming.

If they can get people to watch shot like chess, any game can survive. It's just that you have to combine forces with other people and the sanitized LCS type stuff just does not fly with the fgc. It's not even like there aren't people pushing the limit all the time between politics and irl stuff, but I think the constant social game you have to play is too annoying for someone who also wants tournament results.

Maybe I'm just a creep, but I like small channels on Twitch. There is more interactions with the streamer when the person isn't bombarded by 100 messages a minute. A small joke here, a question answered there, etc. It's nice. (Of course there are channels were I like to enjoy passively as well. Variety, spice of life, etc.)
Of course, the real point is that it's hard to grow. I can see how that's a problem, if one needs the viewership to make a living. Seems sucky unless the person really does love the attention and don't mind the hard work to get those eyeballs, and it's rather unfortunately Twitch isn't good at delivering viewers to anyone who don't already have plenty of those.

it really seems like a lot of would-be creators have a very rosy outlook on how things should work and little understanding of how it works. whether this is a culture thing or how services like twitch and youtube completely obscure the process im not sure, probably some combination of both. but too much of what brian said sounded like it was hitting for the first time, from little things like making clips at least 30 seconds to big things like how limited the pool of potential viewers is on twitch and growth is impossible without moving outside of it
im glad brian is taking this huge initiative to raise all the ships in the harbour and literally grow the audience. it's very clear that twitch and YT are not communicating clearly to give people like kami the actual information they need to grow so it seems like it's gonna fall on people like brian to go grass roots and teach the craft of gaming the algorithm for all our benefit

Having to do 3-4 videos a day to stay relevant seems like a huge issue with the platform itself to be honest... Though I guess that's why I am not full time on youtube or twitch due to my work. It's understandable to do as much as you can to get yourself out in these platforms but I feel that is a double edged sword and will cause a burn out of some sort. It was what Super Eyepatch Wolf had talked about in his recent video that made me think of this.

    • @Brian_F
      @Brian_F Před rokem +7

You cannot compare uploading a Twitch download directly from twitch to the long form actual "art" and high quality stuff super eyepatch wolf puts out lol. Uploading 3 clips a day, even with some minor thumbnail, takes at makes 45 minutes of your day. A huge valuable 30 minute video can take months to make. Not comparable. We're talking about the lowest effort pipeline for competitive gamers to monetize and grow their brand on youtube

YOU ALWAYS WANT TO LEAD PEOPLE TOWARDS WHERE THE MONETIZATION HAPPENS.
Stream on Twitch > Have an editor create digestible content for upload on CZcams > Use Twitter, Facebook, and other social media sites to reach potential consumers you wouldn't reach on Twitch and CZcams...and constantly refer them towards Twitch and CZcams where the monetization happens.

FGC streamers also have the disadvantage of the viewership for fighting games being very low unless it's a new release. Maybe an FGC category on twitch would help.

I don't watch anyone on Twitch, that I don't on CZcams. In most cases for me it's not worth watching them on twitch. Cause like you said, you have to be on when they are streaming. And on top of that it's the best bits that they are going to upload. So unless i've got time to kill or just wanna be able to say I was there. I don't go scrolling through Twitch for content. I go there cause I know someone is going to be there.

One thing to note about the Rallied comparison: CoD is a saturated market in content creation. The FGC is a drought. I mean, just search for iDom v Daigo match analysis. One of the guys starring what's arguably *THE* most famous e-sports moment of all time versus one of the current top 3 best players in the entire world. You'll find two results, you, and Sajam. lmao. iDom himself needs to improve his metagame a little bit, his own video doesn't show in the query (and he doesn't really talk much, which is fairly in character tbh).
So yeah, if anyone - literally anyone - wants to get in the content creation the FGC, they don't have as much competition on the youtube scene. Especially on the SF side, which is surprising to me. The anime side is a bit more active with both meme/WTF content or analysis and technical content. If you're Master rank or you're a nerd with frame data and odd interactions, you have a gig on youtube explaining and creating tutorials. Rest easy.

I don't 100% agree that Twitch can't blow up. I found you thru twitch search, and you were on the 2nd row with a couple hundred viewers before you blew up in 2020. I think a lot of the reason there isn't growth is the people who stream with low views are boring. The amount of times i've seen someone host a less than 10 viewer stream, and get a 1k viewer bomb, but still act like the most boring drivel possible is impressive. If that was me i'd start screaming in the mic, and acting like a dumbass because this is my chance for huge growth.

CZcams helps in the long term. You get money and views from old videos. On Twitch if you are on a niche game, you would never get discovered. If you Play League of Legends you CAN become big only on Twitch. Not the same for FGC content. Also, free games are more popular. With Project L maybe that could change for FGC content.
