40 years since the closure of Cortonwood Colliery in South Yorkshire

  • It was on this day, in 1984 the National Coal Board announced the closure of Cortonwood Colliery in South Yorkshire.
    This strike spread rapidly through the coal fields, polarised the country, and left a legacy in the former mining communities.

    Crazy, considering the resource that they are mining is still needed to this day. Rather cart it across the globe than support it's own industry., This country sucks.!

      Open cast system nowadays, no need to crawl about underground, we have massive heavy machinery nowadays. madness not to use it.@PJ_CJ

    Remember back in the 80s most of the public were on the side of the miners. If these mines were here today Just Stop Oil would be demanding the mines be closed.

      @@PaddyDoesasia-bj3bb Old enough to read history thatcher was just carrying on with pit closer from Labours Harold Wilson and heath who close double the amount of pits to thatcher in there time in office , Look it up. the only thing thatcher did was bang the finale Nail in its coffin

    The torys have always split the working class and are very good at it ,all because the working class let it happen. The real enemy of the working class are themselves, I should know im one of them and I see it . Today we have a tory MP in Don Valley, glad my mam and dad are no longer here to see it .

      Thatcher shut more productive capacity.
      She also shut more Grammar Schools, Docks, Shipyards, Steelworks, Factories and Military bases.
