All diseases with guaranteed death or near guarantee should require zero approval for patient access but FDA should monitor patient disclosure and data tracking.
It's too obvious that FDA is way too strongly involved in profits over benefits... You need to try to understand the profit motives first then fight those first!

My Mom died from this disease 26 years ago. It is one of the most devastating and horrific diseases out there. And not much has changed in 26 years. It is very progressive, and sucks the life blood out of a person. This disease destroys the body, but the mind is intact. My Mom could not move, eat, swallow or breathe. She was on a ventilator. But her mind was still present. She had told me when she could no longer communicate to let her go. Taking her off life support was the hardest thing I have EVER had to do! It literally broke my heart

My Mom keeps going to the emergency room, because she can't breath. She went last night at Duke Regional ER. She has a feeding tube, but the muscles in her neck are causing the breathing problems. I wonder why ALS patients are not being told about the successful Japanes work with high dose injected methylcobalamin ? The trials do not go far enough though. One needs to inject the hiogh dose MeCbl DAILY, and. use neurological support nutrients like ALA and benfotiamine and phospholipids. The FDA cannot stop you accessing this treatment!

Sleep paralysis-when you're mentally aware but cannot move or speak-is scary. But the idea of this being a permanent state is so frightening.
I also can sympathize with the argument the guy made that the FDA shouldn't lower standards, but rather also consider how few treatments there are of a 100% fatal disease. He argued that patients should be given the choice to take potentially effective meds or acquiesce to ALS. It's hard not to be sympathetic to this argument, but thus far, it seems like the meds just simply may not be effective enough to even warrant the FDA to consider this approach.
This is a tough situation. Those with ALS are brave. I'm not sure how I'd handle such a diagnosis.

If there is only a small percentage of people with ALS I do not think there will be a cure. The fact is companies are always looking for the biggest profit.
And even then Companies tend to fail. Look at Cancer. The majority of folks will get some form of cancer in their life, but there is still no cure.

More definitely needs to be done for those suffering this condition. Keep fighting! I truly believe investment needs to be made in prevention for those with familial history. The Wahls Protocol and Dale Bredeson’s The end of Alzheimer protocol both show that there are lifestyle interventions that can prevent, reduce, and even reverse neurological disease processes. I believe there’s hope that similar approaches can work to prevent the onset of ALS and even slow progression in the very early stages. Don’t think that a miracle drug is the only way. While hope is essential, having the FDA allow the release of ineffective drugs only does harm as it gives false hopes and gets in the way of finding remedies that do work. A treatment that really works well will give strong, lasting results, not just maybe make a small but statistically significant change in blood values for a couple of months.
yeah that didn't totally sit right with me either. Yes we need to work towards finding treatments, but if a drug is ineffective in a large double blind stage 3 trial one shouldn't be administering it simply because no other ones exist.

Finding the cause should come before the cure..
makes for a lousy business model unfortunately. Reality is most chronic diseases we already know how to prevent, we just continually choose not to. Dentists for example could have been marching in DC decades ago to get added sugar taken out of foods, instead dentistry is a high paying exceptionally stable job, just like most healthcare jobs
This story kind of focused on the genetic components of ALS as if they are 100%, but it totally ignored the lifestyle factors, a sad commonality with most diseases.
