If you find a pickaxe in a chest, this might be even a very good seed, since the loot in ancient cities are decent.

Tbf, pickaxes aren’t really in most loot pools, the only tools ancient cities have are hoes
Well they do mostly have armor so that would help you survive from most types of mobs.. just not a warden

You can get everything you need to escape in the ancient city! There are little structure bits made of dark oak logs and planks, and you can find glowberries and bones in the chests for food. You can mine the wool by hand to sound proof the shriekers and sensors to get into the chests without triggering anything. 100% doable if you do some studying of the deep dark mechanics, I've done it multiple times now, i love the ancient cities so much :) If you think a next action might spawn a warden, look for an escape rout beforehand, so you don't get stuck while blinded by darkness. I've never died unintentionally to a warden yet :)

Actually, there is a section in the ancient city that has dark oak wood, so technically, if you’re careful, you could escape without having to punch deepslate.
Another solution is gathering a bunch of wool and pillaring upwards.

There's also wool everywhere, and apparently ladders and wood structures. The chest loot also doesn't contain that many useful things for escape, from what I've heard.

Remember the days when minecraft updates meant anything. Like adding tons of colored blocks, many new biomes, overhauling the ocean. Now it's let's change how caves work. Not like the whole progression of minecraft is to avoid wasting time mining and automating as much as possible. But we're so out of ideas we're gonna drag out this cave update over 3 different updates.

There's a ton of wool to mine that doesn't alert the warden(s). Two wool makes 3 carpet, which can be placed on top of each other. You can even loot some of the chests nearby, run off, wait for the warden to despawn (approx. 3 minutes), then rinse and repeat for a few more before towering up to grassy land. 1 hour at most, and you get a bunch of loot. Ez
