Drawing a proportionate cube in perspective

- One task that a lot of artists struggle is drawing a seemingly perfect cube in perspective. Being able to draw a cube in perspective is important, because if we can master this ‘simple’ shape, then we can apply this knowledge to drawing more complicated objects.
All too often, a cube that we draw doesn’t always look like a cube at all; they can look too wide, too thin, too narrow, and this can result in a lot of frustration for the artist.
In this video, I propose a method that I believe will help you to draw better looking cubes in perspective.

Beautiful. I’m just starting to get into perspective drawing and very quickly ran into the problem of needing equal measurements in all directions (I.e. a cube). The first videos to come up on the matter are complex formulas using stage points, vanishing points, random lines… it’s insane that this isn’t more widely known
Interesting method. Useful for ensuring squareness of the cube using the square cylinder. But a few observations:
(1) it's not clear how the widths of the minor axes of the cylinder are chosen wrt proximity to the horizon
(2) it makes an incorrect assumption that the center of the ellipse is the same as the center of the original circle (intersection of square diagonals). To be correct, the method should shift the initial front facing square back (compensating the foreshortening of the circle to the central VP)
(3) in the demo, there's obviously reverse perspective issue on the back plane (not because the back edge is not shorter than left, but it's not shorter enough, which causes the illusion of reverse perspective)
(4) to help prevent reverse perspective, it would make sense to extend each edge at least half its width in all sides. Also show and compare top and bottom diagonals. Make sure all real-life parallel lines converge to the two imaginary VPs of the horizon.
(5) not sure that the center lines and X's on the sides are much helpful. They could be de-emphasized in favor of the side extensions and top/bottom diagonals for their correct vanishing.
this is the best tutorial i watched on youtube amazing tutorial, should deserve more recognition
I'm really inspire your presenting skills
Thanks for the lesson!
You’re welcome! More videos to come
10:59 We need a more in depth sketch tour man!
all your drawings looks so dope
Thank you! I will save this as an idea for a future video
Best videos on perspective drawing I've seen on youtube! And thank you for using simple traditional mediums (not digital)!
Thank you! I struggled with the intricacies of perspective for many years, so I’m glad I can share some of what I learned with people around the world
@@thomasalexander3630 I just bought your perspective course on Gumroad; The information you share is golden! Did you study these concepts with the Russian Academy teacher, Dmitri Anisimov?
Hey guys! Thank you for the feedback. I’ve just uploaded another quick video demonstrating this method. It’s a close up view of the drawing, no talking in the video, and is easy to follow along. Enjoy!

Can you reupload this in full normal speed? It is a great video, you are quiet a good teacher, it would be nice to enjoy it at its fullest.
Thank you for your video.
I try to sketch some situations but I begin to struggle on the view and perspective.
Your video is awesome. New direction in my training on my drawing.
I’m glad you enjoyed it! In the next tutorial we will learn how to reverse engineer this method
Here we go sensei!!!
Hi I love your videos and starting my art journey. Can you provide any resources towards architectural drawing. I love your drawing style and trying to understand perspective myself!❤
Wowww, it's just amazing 😍😍, thanks for this video !!! 🙏🙏 I love your channel and I subscribe for this video!
Thank you for your comment, I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
very cool trick I will try using ellipses to construct cubes myself
thx for sharing :3
Thank you for watching!
I did 2 pages while watching you draw.
I’ve never seen cubes constructed with ellipses before. Thank you for sharing!
On another note: the captions for the segments where you talking is sped don’t show up until after you start the main tutorial. I didn’t get the joke until then, hahaha
The middle cube on the left I can see it in perspective, then goes out of perspective, then it goes back into perspective my brain doesn't work what a trip
16:40 so in this step, we can arbitrarily put the height of minor axis?
Ciao Thomas complimenti ma hai costruito un cilindro con piano sagittale non hai tracciato prima gli assi di simmetria?
there's an issue with the sound Thomas in certain points. Too bad, sounds like a very usefull video - can you please correct it?
I’m just starting out in drawing ✍️ and this is blowing my mind 😅 I’m sure it’s not a big deal to you, though
This method was a big deal for me when I first found out about it! Always something new to learn. Good luck on your drawing journey
good vid but this method isn't for me because I tried for 4 days with no luck with this method.
The part of the center of circle/box and also the lines that touch the circle at around 35:00 is not clear.
Can you further clarify?
Also when you say that it makes proportion easy - can you elaborate more or zoom in a little?
A general tip, when you explain something, it's good to give concrete examples and elaborate than just through an explanation.
Other than that - good video. :)
Hi Avi! I’ve just uploaded another video of this method which might be easier to follow along. Check it out!
