The Maloof family is finalizing an agreement to sell the Sacramento Kings to a group that hopes to move the franchise to Seattle for the 2013-14 season, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The deal will sell the Kings for approximately $500 million to a group led by hedge-fund manager Chris Hansen and Microsoft chairman Steve Ballmer. The group is seeking to relocate the franchise to Seattle's KeyArena for the 2013-14 season.
The Seattle group's plans, with support of the NBA, is to play two seasons in KeyArena before moving into a new Seattle arena, sources said.

I agree that Sacramento has great fans (not necessarily better fans), but that doesn't matter to the NBA's revenue model. A lot of their money comes from vendors linked to big city stadiums and TV marketing. Seattle's was 13th highest around the end. Sacramento is around 20th now. So, while Sacramento loves basketball, the NBA doesn't love Sacramento. So all those Kings fans were better off buying something from the stadium and then heading home to watch the game. That's just real.
Seattle is Sacramento compared to San Francisco so the same year they open the doors to the new arena in Seattle San Francisco will have out shined them with what the Warriors will unveils right on the bay.
It's just a name for a multipurpose building. Chicago Bulls played at Chicago Stadium from 1967-1994. Detroit Pistons played at Olympia Stadium 1957-1961. So, while they do play basketball in stadiums, they won't be playing basketball in Sacramento. Go Sonics!
