I'm introducing 3 dogs tomorrow by myself since i don't have anyone to help. New one is leash trained and old one is a spaz leash hater. Going to have to find a way to introduce in my back yard.

I wish it was that easy for me. My situation is really difficult. Bcz I have a 12 yr old male chihuahua/pug I had him for 12 yrs. Then I bought a 2 yr old dog (rat terrier/jack Russell mix) into the home, but they got along immediately. No problem, there. But JUST 2 DAYS AGO I found a stray limping in the street, cold outside I just could not leave this dog in the streets cold & limping. I took him home. I kept them separate. I'm afraid there'll be fights. I believe the stray dog is mixed with American Pit Bull & some other dog, he's bigger AND much stronger - this dog is a SWEETHEART. He took to me right away. My 12 yr.old dog was barking & growling at him. My 2 yr old dog barked a little - the stray tried to mount the 2 yr old ( female). I walk them separate bcz the stray is VERY strong I need my whole upper body strength bcz he pulls sometimes. I don't know how to bring them together but I KNOW it's not gonna be easy like it looks in this video. I also have to drive a distance for wide open park spaces, we live in the city in a 2 bedroom apartment. I don't know what to do ... please help. ANYBODY - HELP lol

I like to think of myself as extremely intuitive when it comes to the animal kingdom. Animal body language is very easy for me to pick up on. It's always paid off when introducing our pup to another person's doggo. However for the first time my family is considering adding a second pooch to our pack so I've been watching instructional videos for the last hour and a half. This is the first one that gave more than one or two tips period but a ton of very helpful tips that actually make sense. Thank you!

I'm a dog trainer as well and I'm about to introduce another dog to the household. Your video was great summary of everything that's important and just proved me that I'm also on the right track with dog training. Would also like to add, avoid feeding at the same time or in the same place to prevent food aggression until both dogs are comfortable with each other and don't show signs of being possessive. Would you agree?
Absolutely - I'm very careful with resources until I know the two dogs won't have any issues, and I continue to feed high value resources in crates, depending on the dog/situation.

Thank you for this video. We have a slightly different circumstance and could really use your advice. We have 2 big dogs (Labrador retriever and a German Shepard both female). We are looking at adopting a German Shepard mix (male). We introduced them last week and it didn’t go so well. The new one is about a year and doesn’t really know how to be social yet and plays a bit to rough. First we parallel walked all three of them. At first, the new dog barked quite a bit. The lab and the German Shepherd barked a couple times. We walked them until barking was nonexistent and then we went inside the foster mom‘s house. We introduced them separately first. Our lab pretty well ignored him and eventually they both just went and laid down. We then removed the lab and introduced the German Shepard. It took a couple hours but they began showing signs of play. We then brought the lab back thinking she would just be ignored as before but the new dog showed a particular interest in her and began trying to play (biting at the scruff of her neck, pouncing, and nudging at her back legs). The lab tolerated this, but the our german Shepard didn’t like the new dog being that aggressive with the lab and would growl and show teeth. She even nipped at him at one point. We decided to give it a rest and try again on a different day. What advice do you have for our next meeting. We would love to have this little man join our pack, but want to at least see some improvement in the dogs relationship before we commit to adoption.
Hi Macie - I would get a trainer in with you for the next go around of introductions. It's really hard to help you without seeing the subtlety of the dogs interactions, so i would hire a positive reinforcement trainer with multi-dog household experience to be a part of your next session to help you decide whether or not this is a good fit for your household dynamic. Sorry I can't be of more assistance!

Hey i got a question. I brought a new dog to the pack shadow he was going to be taken to the dog pound n was mis treaded. His was about a yr old. He was in back of my pickup up. My only male dog alex went to him n they smell each other. N then my 1st dog gave him a lil bit. So i kept them apart. So i tryed to introduce them. I got a muzzle on alex n put him inside the dog cannel. N let shadow run around. Alex was wiggling his tale with no hair standing up so i let him out the cannel he run to him because shadow was running i. The yard and alex managed to get him down with his chin. Now shadow is scared of him.
@@a.o.sanchez7751 this is complicated and requires more help that what can be found on the internet. It would be best to start by repairing the relationship with lots of parallel walking and also getting a local positive reinforcement trainer in to assess the situation and help you with next steps.
U right i had them running around get them run around. I put a muzzle on alex. Shadow with a trying leash. Shadow was nervous like he was trying to run off. My adrenaline when up a lil bit alex tryed to luanch. But i pull him. Seen his body as his adrenaline went up too. After i got shadow right. They started doing good. They tryed to sneak a sniff. Got home alex did not wanted to walk inside he was waiting for me to get him out too
What notice is like shadow dont make eye contact with alex he walk off just notice him doing a small growl
What is the best way to introduce a dog that barks at their new playmate? Even when they’re not in the same room. I’ve introduced both dogs but one won’t stop barking at the other one.

If you're struggling with inter-household conflict I would find a positive reinforcement trainer in your area to help you troubleshoot the situation. Having a professional check out what's going on will give you a plan to follow to help create more harmony in your house.
I have a question about using a muzzle is this something that most trainers don't do when introducing dogs. I'm just a little surprised and watching videos no one seems to be talking about them

Very amazing video! My three month old cockapoo will be joining the family alongside my 2 year old GSD. How would you go about this? In your video you do recommend parallel working. But the dog won’t be fully vaccinated to go on proper walks. How do you approach this now?
At three months old your pup should be able to go on short walks in areas that aren't highly populated by unvaccinated dogs, but you have to do what you're comfortable with. I would follow the procedure outlined, keeping in mind that I'd do it in an unpopulated area (ie. not a dog park). Then I'd do lots of pen time/baby gate separation in the house to give the older GSD a break as needed and the puppy some much needed rest time.

Yes - separating the two dogs while you're not home is definitely the best plan. Crating one and leaving one loose can cause stress so try to separate in different rooms if you don't use crates with no contact, or crate/gate them so they have no contact while you're not supervising. Happy Training!
Thanks for the tips! Very helpful with all the details. We have a fearful aggressive Chihuahua mix (7yo) and will be adopting a papillon mix (3yo). We won't be able to give them time to meet outside and separate over a longer period, as we have to take her home right away. We will give them a chance to meet out in a park at first and follow the advice as much as possible, but we're taking the papillon home right away and they won't be going home to the foster home after the initial meeting. How long does it typically take for total comfort between the two, where you know they will both be safe alone together?
Hi Monica - unfortunately, this has a lot to do with the particular dogs involved. I would keep them separated for quite a while if you're not able to supervise them. It could easily take 6 months or more for a fear-aggressive dog. Highly recommend crate training as well so they can be crated individually but next to eachother comfortably but also be safely left in the same area. It's a great way for them to get to passively get to know eachother without risk to either dog.

Hi Laura. Thanks for the video. We have 2 dogs at home who have lived together for about 3 years. A new roommate is moving in with her dog in about 3 months but she lives in the area now. We have some time to start intros - thanks for the tips! - but should we take our dogs out individually - one at a time - on the intro walks w/new dogs? I think they would be overwhelming to the new dog if both my dogs were there at first b/c they get each other going but is there anything troublesome about taking each dog solo while doing the walks? My 2 dogs are almost never separate unless one is going to the vet and I have a big fenced in yard so they usually play out there and don't often go out on walks. Should we also have one-on-one exposure to the new dog when meeting in the back yard? If yes, when in the process do we let the 2 house dogs go together to meet w/ the new dog? thanks for your help
Individual walks and individual meet-ups, for sure, ideally at a location that isn't your house.
I took my 2 female dogs to a shelter to meet a male dog I want to adopt. One stayed in the car while the other one went to do the meet and greet with the shelter dog. I went in the play area with my dog and then the staff employee went in with the shelter dog. The staff girl let go of the shelter dog's leash and he just came running towards my dog, he wanted to play, but play rough. It scared the crap out of my doggie and the whole thing went down hill. I was so mad as they immediately said that adopting him was not a good idea because he saw my doggie petrified. She is shy he plays rough. They never followed this advice! Like they have no clue about dogs! 😡🤬

Had a similar experience today, but it was just small nips saying "don't get that close please" but nothing crazy. Adoption center said it was too dangerous and we couldn't adopt it. It was ridiculous and we hardly got a chance to try to properly introduce them.
What if you don’t have access to a neutral outdoor/off-leash area? Will the yard of one of the dogs work as the introduction area? I have successfully introduced a couple of dogs using different methods, and going on body language to determine if the dogs were going interact well, but with a newer dog to our family, I feel way less confident about reading her body language. I can set up parallel walking with someone, but don’t have access to a neutral outside/off-leash area that isn’t the yard of the other dog.
You definitely have to make due with what's available. I would make sure you do a LONG parallel walk before introducing them in the yard to be able to feel out their body language. Don't be afraid to keep them separated for a bit and do parallel walks for several days if you feel like they aren't as comfortable with eachother as you'd like.
Good video. I'm picking up my first foster in two days. I gave a 2 yo rescue pittie (60#) that is sometimes aggressive but usually to males. I have a 9 yo lab That is alpha butt very sweet. I've had her since she was a pup.
I am picking up a 5 yo female pittie from a shelter in two days to foster. Didn't want a second pittie but it literally saved her life. By the way, it's my first foster. Thinking I should muzzle both pitties to begin with.

Training them both to safely wear a muzzle is definitely a good plan. I would give the foster a few days separated from your crew to decompress before having to navigate the dynamics of the other dogs in the home.
I live in a 2 bedroom apartment so i don't have the resources/space to separate the 2 dogs properly. My dog does accept the foster one when we walk and in the yard, but in the house she keeps barking at her, making her stay isolated in the kitchen. Treats/food are not an option as my dog is very protective of her food usually. Do you have any advice on how to socialize them?

This seems like something I would get a professional involved in (in-person) as it's hard to make suggestions over the internet. In the meantime, if you have two bedrooms, I would have one in each bedroom so that the resident doesn't continue practicing intimidating the foster in the house. Sorry I can't be of more help!
Hi, thank you so much for this video. We recently introduced our dog to my mum's dog using all your tips, and it went really well. They were playing together, went to sleep in the same room, had no issues at all. Unfortunately just as my mum's dog was about to leave they had a scuffle/fight, growling and snapping at each other. We were close so managed to separate them after about 4 seconds, neither dog was injured. We have no idea what caused it, one second they were fine the next they were going crazy. Do you have any advice at all on what might have happened? And on what we should do better next time? I think maybe one dog jumped up in excitement for putting the lead on, and other interpreted this as an attack? But it was so quick. Earlier in the day the bigger dog was standing over the smaller dog while she was lying on the ground, could this have anything to do with it? Like a dominance thing? Any thoughts would be very appreciated :)
I'm so glad you found this video helpful! Unfortunately, without being there, it would be hard for me to know what triggered this scuffle. Perhaps one was startled from being asleep? That being said, it sounds like you left them together for a long time. If they are new to being together, I would go for shorter, positive interactions, so maybe long walk together, 30-60 minutes of play/coexisting and then separate them by leashing them to separate ends of the room and let them chill that way. Shorter positive experiences will help build on your success. Hope that helps!

I would get an in-person trainer on board, but in general, lots of parallel walks outside the home, baby gates and separation inside the home, don't be in a rush, on leash hanging out watching tv together. Lots of parallel activities.
My new dog barks like mad when he sees another dog bit wags his tail and I can’t tell if he’s being aggressive or just super vocal wanting to play 😬
Hi Gillian! It could be barrier frustration (frustration on the leash) or it could be fear/anxiety about another dog approaching, or a variety of other things. I recommend you get a positive reinforcement in-person trainer on board to observe the behavior and help you with it. Tail wagging does not necessarily mean friendly intentions. There's lots of types of tail movement. Good luck with your new pup!
Hi! I have a rescue fully trained service animal who’s a little nervous. He was attacked rt b4 I got him. The Shepard that went after him was new to the “pack” he was raised/trained in. The program was a prison based program and they have multiple trainers so it was very controlled. My dog was not the main aggressor, but his confidence isn’t what it should be now. I can tell he misses other dog’s and he’s played very well w/my neighbors pit mix.
We have for the time being kept him separated from the larger males. What can I do to build his confidence so he’s reassured that we are safe? I wld love him to have more play dates w/his new pack. He did great w/a larger female both at my house and hers! But, not so much w/the chiweenie. He kinda got bit again by the little dog, but played fine afterwards and didn’t defend. My poor bby is going to take a while to integrate into the new world he’s living in. They told me that bc of the time he was surrendered to the pound then of time he was institutionalized it wld take about 3/6 mo. I have no prob. keeping him under control but he is a little scary now around new dogs. Esp. males, but he cries and misses being around other dogs. Thx.
This sounds like an issue that you need to get addressed by whatever organization gave you this dog, asap. This is not something that can be addressed by an online dog trainer.
@@DoggyU I’m still wrkn with the trainers that raised and trained him. I have instructions for what to do and not to do now. The prob is not my dog, it’s that other dogs are not trained. Their owners do not keep them on leashes, nor do they make them behave. I have been instructed to keep him on leash. I also know how to properly introduce him once we feel he’s ready. Dog fights can happen, especially in a pack. I understand what ur saying though. My dog’s trainer has witnessed him in higher stress situations and he has done very well. They never just throw a dog on someone which is not trained. They also check in on a regular basis. So, I am choosing to continue to train him. However he has to be introduced to the “outside” world. Thank u though. I do enjoy ur videos and content.

As outlined in the video above ... breed doesn't matter. But it is always good to hire an in-person professional if you have questions!
What is the dogs are very different sizes? We took in a large dog and have a chiweenie. We are keeping them separate at the moment and starting parallel walking.
Same advice applies with a bit more watch for the smaller dog just so they don't accidentally get injured. But parallel walking is a great start! Greeting through a protective gate can also be helpful (like the large dog is in an exercise pen and the chiweenie can approach as they become more comfortable, as long as there isn't any barrier aggression.
@@DoggyU Thank you! So far so good - my chiweenie is just showing "lip" now, understood because he's the size of Chance's (new dog) head lol... I probably won't ever leave them together unsupervised but at least we can all be in the same room now. Chance has been such a great sport about it though - he just wants to play but doesn't know his own size.
What if a dog it's in a fence? Would that be a good way to introduce them? Because my neighbor has his dog and I'm going over there today to introduce him together. But he's going to be an offense. Would that be okay
Highly recommend you do parallel walking off your neighbors property first. It will make the introduction go much more smoothly!
I have a question, your video seems very informative. My question is this: how come when you take your dog to a dog park and it gets to meet other dogs they have never seeing before, and all they do is just play, and play without any issues. why is that, please explain.
Hey thanks for reaching out! I think you're asking why some dogs are okay at the dog park but not at the house? It's kind of like if you go out to a party, you're happy to socialize but if that same stranger showed up at your house, you might feel differently about it. Being in the home vs. on neutral ground can change a dog's behavior.

Okay what do you do when you don't have the ability to do open space play. Because we don't have that luxury. I brought in a foster dog to my house and it's being very aggressive to my resident dog. So they have barriers, but I feel like they are missing that play interaction outside.
I would check out @sniffspot locations near you to rent some outdoor area nearby. Alternatively, you could try finding a dog park that you could go to in off-hours when it's empty! Definitely more tricky when you don't have a yard, but getting creative about the situation can help!
@@DoggyU Sadly, the dog parks are not open to the public now after Hurricane Ian last year except one and it's always full of big dogs. We've made it work, though. I took away all the 'resources' worth 'guarding'. I walk them harnessed together in tandem. They play together now and exist more peacefully in the house.

I have here sharpei/canecorso kiddo that is supposed to get to know my big old strong and energetic bullmastiff. To these type of dogs you should not yell at nor show any force.
They may 'behave' at that moment, but loose respect and may become issue at some point.

I plan to introduce two street dogs to my home puppy. The street dogs are a pair. And I’m possibly going to adopt them. What should I be aware of?
First, give the foster dogs time to decompress separately and away from the dog you have at home for at least a few days. Second, do you have any indication that these dogs do well with other dogs? And finally, when you do start the introduction process, do each of the pair separately with your personal dog. The pair could easily gang up or make your puppy feel uncomfortable so do some parallel walking with each of the pair separately with your dog. Have a friend or family member help and perhaps hire a local trainer to get professional eyes on the situation. Take it slow.

My pup made sure to remain the alpha but the pups didn’t care and there were plenty of people to give them all love and attention that they all felt safe despite the transition. I have found them a new family. Thank you for the advice.

What should you do when one barks at the other on the walk?
Do they typically bark at other dogs on walks? Is it aggressive or frustration-based? When you run into issues, I highly recommend you seek out an experienced professional to help walk you through the process.
@@DoggyU yes she barks at every dog on our walks but she sometimes will not bark but i think it is because she is tired from the walk
@@DoggyU my mom wants to adopt another spaniel as my other spaniel passed away and she wants my remaining spaniel to have a companion but I am nervous she might fight with the new dog but she is not aggresive, she is just a really nervous dog

Hi Lisa! You could potentially hire a dog walker to help out or if you're good with double dog management you could put one dog on your right and one on your left.

I’ve followed your steps so far so good but very hard with a Great Dane/ lab and a Chihuahua, I’m at my wits in the Chihuahuas so confrontational and a hassle and the great Dane he’s not like that at all but he’s so strong when he pause at me to get my attention it leaves me with scratches and bruises that go all the way down my legs I even have some I currently

This really depends on the temperament of your current dog. But slow intros with lots of separate time in the same room using a puppy playpen can be helpful for dog-selective dogs. If you are unsure, always contact a trainer to help with the transition.

And what about if you are introducing a puppy that hasnt had vaccines yet
Puppies are a bit of a different case. If you're worried about introducing your puppy to your current dog, I recommend working with a professional to set up a management strategy to start. I often will have ex pens and baby gates to do a very slow intro for dogs that are unsure about a puppy. You can also go to a friend's yard and walk the perimeter, or go to a space without a lot of dog traffic. Puppies can't walk very far.

That’s exactly the type of video I’m looking for also. I’m trying to introduce two new German Shepard’s to the two I already have but they’re all older dogs and are very aggressive with each other
You might need to look for videos that fixes their aggression towards others dogs before trying to introduce them.

Hi prabhash - as outlined in the video, introducing the dogs in the house is not ideal. It is much better to go to neutral ground to do the introduction.
My sister will be visiting from out of town, so this wouldn’t work.
Who has time for all this really? This is a good video but not everyone has that much free time.
I think in general, we each make the time for things that we deem important. To me, introducing two dogs that need to live together to foster a positive relationship long term is worth the time it takes to do it right, which is why I made the video, to help others understand how I am able to make those interactions work. I recently introduced a veteran's new GSD guide dog to their family dog. The family dog was overzealous around the guide. We spent the time it took to do it right and now they're able to be friendly, play, and hang out at family gatherings together. This method works time and time again. Glad you enjoyed the video :)
