    Love you guys bringing the F-4s back to life, brings me back to the years of 1960-63 when i was a plane captain at Pax river naval air test center Maryland . At that time we were required to pull flight time. Needless to say, i climbed into the back seat of the F-4 PHANTOM we were testing. The test pilots i flew with had no trouble giving us the ride of our lives. After one of the flights i was given a gold mach two pin provided by McDonald Douglas for being one of the first ten people to fly mach two in the F4. What a rush!!

    As KC-135 Boom Operator in the 60s and 70s I refueled the F-4 probably over 1,000 times and mostly in Viet Nam. You are correct that you can fall in love with that plane. The sound of the engines when it was taxiing is a sound I will never forget. Glad to have been around at that time.

    Well in reality only the frame is an F-4E internally it's a completely different aircraft as all Greek F4s have been upgraded by the German DASA and have received: the Hughes APG-65GY radar (the same one fitted on the F-18C/D), the Honeywell H-764G navigation system combining LINS & GPS, NAVCOM AN/APN-232 CARA radar altimeter and Elbit Modular Multi-Role Computer (MMRC). The cockpit has been enhanced with Elbit MFDs, new DTS & the imaging system V-80AB-F. The upgraded Greek F4 is capable of carrying the AIM-120, AGM-65G, AGM-130, and various targeting pods

    Today in 2023 there's no mission that the Phantom is BEST at. There's always a better choice for any mission from an efficiency perspective. But we keep Phantoms flying because, simply.....WE LOVE THEM. There are still some Air Forces in the world that find ways to justify keeping them flying and it's probably more of an emotional decision than a practical one. But I'm glad for it. Because Phantoms are AWESOME. There's no other fighter, ever, that has a more intimidating, "I was made to kill and destroy enemies" look about it.

    What's the leakage from the wing? At 7:17 and takeoff too? The Phantom is a beauty but my knowledge is sorely lacking about them...

    • @trespire
      @trespire Před rokem +3

      Looked like excess fuel discharging via the fuel dump. The main wing section, not including the outer folding wing section, is an integral fuel tank. These Phantoms were flying with all 3 external drop tanks, yet no ordinance, which seems odd. Looks like they were either on a long practice flight, or just burning through a lot of fuel.

    • @bearowen5480
      @bearowen5480 Před rokem +3

      @@trespire Correct. Also, pressurization of external (i.e. "drop" fuel tanks) at liftoff causes a momentarily visible puff of fuel vapor.

    • @tomsherwood4650
      @tomsherwood4650 Před rokem +2

      @@bearowen5480 They used to fuel them up at night when cool. Then the heat of the day would cause the fuel to expand and come out the vents. They had hoses and drums sometimes to catch the overflow which was not reusuable and people with oil furnaces would take it home to add to their tanks.

    Does the Greek airforce actually use the arrestor hook of the F-4?

    • @Epicaviation47
      @Epicaviation47  Před rokem +2

      Is functional but nope they don't

    • @trespire
      @trespire Před rokem +3

      The arrestor hook on land based Phantoms will be used in a runway over run emergency situation. Near the end of the runway there is an arrestor cable, and as a last means of stopping also a special net.
      As the Phantom was originally designed for carrier operation, it's arrestor hook and landing gear are beefed up for slamming into ships at sea, so it's no problem if the hook is used.
      The arm of the arrestor hook is a heavy titanium structure.

    • @bearowen5480
      @bearowen5480 Před rokem +2

      All land-based operators of F-4s in the case of landing with one or more blown tires used an approach-end hook to cable arrestment to prevent a long rollout without proper tire/wheels. Successful approach-end arrestments will typically stop a Phantom in about 1,500 feet of rollout upon engagement.
