  • The complications of laparoscopic hernia surgery and cost of hernia surgery cost are two aspects that go hand in hand because of the high frequency of recurrence of hernias following surgery.
Among the major complications of laparoscopic hernia surgery or a hernia repair is a recurrence of the hernia. A hernia comes back either due to patient-related factors or surgery-related factors. The next major complication of laparoscopic hernia surgery is the displacement of the hernia because of inappropriate size or type of mesh used. very often this is a direct result of the effort to reduce the cost of hernia surgery. Laparoscopic repair of a hernia increases the cost of hernia surgery or repair quite considerably as compared to the cost of hernia surgery by open hernia procedure. This is because the mesh used in open hernia surgery is quite different from the mesh used in laparoscopic hernia surgery. The cost of mesh used for laparoscopic hernia surgery is higher. However, the major increase in the cost of hernia surgery by the laparoscopic procedure is due to the tackers that are required to attach the mesh to the body tissue from the inside. This is over and above the suturing, that is required to attach the mesh.
The cost of hernia surgery must take into account the complications of laparoscopic hernia surgery vs open hernia surgery. The rate of complications of laparoscopic hernia surgery is much lower than in open hernia repair. Therefore, although Laparoscopic Hernia repair is a costlier option, because chances of hernia recurrence are lesser, in the long run, it is the lesser expensive option. Many patients try to save cost and land up with open surgery under compromised conditions. This usually leads to complications like infected mesh, displaced mesh, etc. The surgery has to be re-done, increasing the cost to the patient. Moreover, re-do hernia repair is more expensive. therefore common sense suggests that Hernia repair should be performed by surgeons well versed with laparoscopic hernia repair techniques. This will help avoid complications of laparoscopic hernia surgery.

Sir, If laparoscopically implanted mess is required to remove then is it possible ? and in that case what is best option for redo mesh removal surgery (open or laparoscopic) ? Titanium tacks are used to fixing the mesh. Is it possible to do MRI Scan in future if required?
