- In 9AD, Teutoburg Forest was the scene of a crushing defeat for the Empire. Masterminded by Arminius, the son of a Germanic chieftain taken as a child and raised as a hostage in Rome, the battle saw his betrayal of the Roman general Varus.
Arminius united the tribes, ambushed Varus' Legion and struck a fatal and shattering blow to the Empire's expansion.
Teutoburg Forest features as a playable historical battle in Total War: ROME II, and demonstrates some of the game's thrilling new features, including our true line-of-sight system, deployable battlefield technology, and our tense new style of ambush scenarios.

"GIVE ME BACK MY LEGIONS" I yelled when the Civil War broke out ......
What civil war?
He is reffering to the ingame civil wars.
Never use generals of other political parties
@@danielblom391 exactly
imagine the effort raising them to be seasoned veterans and losing them because of the stupid senate... i ended up using my spies to poison them
Can we stop for a moment and appreciate how this voice actor made the best 'Give me back my legions!' in history?
Hundred percent dude, gave me chills
"Varus, Quinctilius Varus, give me back my legions!" Favourite line in Roman History.
Yes
Maybe things would have been different if Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo were there.
Why would that be?
(Rome Fan here to)
azteca ddress Maybe the Romans could have won or at least manage to escape with the bulk of the army intact.
Well then but what would be Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo's part in the battle?
azteca ddress High-ranking officers
Oh..
I die a little inside when i read the comments prior to the release.
"They trusted you .. with all their money, and YOU .. let them down".
Ironically, Rome II was the total war I enjoyed the most.
CA? Betray us? I think not
"why the bloody hell does makarov know you?"
Varus, oh.. Quinctilius Varus, give me back my framerate!
According to a Roman historian, apparently Emperor Augustus upon hearing about the defeat, was so shaken by the news that he stood butting his head against the walls of his palace, repeatedly shouting "Quintili Vare, legiones redde!" ( "Quintilius Varus, give me back my legions!' )
Yep and also getting Varus's own head.
Everyone gangsta until the trees start speaking Proto-Germanic.
The battle of Teutoburg single-handedly drove Augustus to the edge of insanity, and permanently made three legions disbanded as they became a symbol of bad luck. The battle had HUGE significance to Rome's attitude to the North, and arguably had a greater impact than the defeat of Carhae.
The defeat of Carrhae was from Republic era, so of course Augustus doesn't give two shits about the era haven't even ruled yet.
Completely stopped Roman conquests into Germany
"Quintilius Varus, give me back my legions!" -Octavian Augustus, first roman emperor
Assembly.........Oh,CREATIVE ASSEMBLY GIVE ME BACK MY DOLLARS!!
Seriously, start blaming Sega for rushing Creative to release an unfinished game. Just be glad that CA is working really hard to get the game working for everyone.
Oh, I will love this game!
Funny facts btw:
- When Arminius shouts "Germania will be free", he is refering to a territory that was actually formed 70 years after his death.
- When Arminius is talking about "my people", he speaks for just 1 of the about 103 german tribes (and these are just the west-german tribes... not to mention the east- and north-german tribes).
Yep, applying modern standards to the past, better called historicism, is something a lot of people tend to fall into.
Well it's still a very cool line
Where did you find that number for the German tribes-American Italian/Mexican girl here, who fell in love with Deutschland.
@@stormysmurf Hi there,
may I ask how you found this video/my comment?
To answer your question: Of course, these numbers are an approximation/estimation since the sources we use (mainly Roman and Greek authors) are not always reliable. Sometimes for example the name of a tribe matches the name of a region/village/territory and can be confirmed, while other tribes may rest speculative. To make things even more difficult, some tribes merged/confederated and formed new tribes (as it is known from the Franks).
So what people have done is excerpting all German peoples/tribes from the contemporary authors (mainly Tacitus, Caesar, Jordanes, Ptolemy etc.). The result is many many entries in a very important Encyclopaedia which is called “Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde”. If you want to know more about early German history, I can highly recommend looking up topics there.
Now, you can look up the tribes/peoples in the index/register and count them. However, it might be faster counting the entries in the correspondent Wikipedia article which is called “List of early Germanic peoples”.
A final remark: “Germania” was a description used by the Romans, not by the Germanic tribes/peoples for themselves at this time.
Hopefully this helped with your question. Best regards from Cologne
@@GuentherShadow I am always soaking up Teutoberg forest info wherever I can. Thank you for the book, that was incredible to see. I think its a failing of my imagination but I had a hard time imagining them ever being able to get a number on something like tribes. And I understand the problem with getting your info from the enemy. =p
Who's here after seeing Barbarian on Netflix? 2020!
Me
Same lol
That, would be me
ave
I didnt know what it was until two days ago it said it was about ariminus and varus I got so hype this is my second favorite military battle.
Quintilius Varus, give me back my 60 dollars!

*QUINTUS VARUS*
*GIVE ME BACK MY LEGIONS*
Quintili Vare, legiones redde!
Jacob Snyder accurate
MUH LEGIONS
oh varus give me back muh legions
giv bac muh legion ok?
I don't know why, but this "Give me back my legions" give me chills
Too damned right.
A tragic moment in history.
But the men were avenged. Germanicus went back to that forsaken hole of a place and put a boot up the Macromanni asses. Took 2/3 of the Eagles back and Arminius's head for good measure.
At least those men's families could rest easy, and take comfort in that fact.
too bad Germanicus died before he could continue his punishement of Germany
@Thirsty Sexpert Arminius was killed by roman assassins? It would make sense, considering he was harassing Germanicus' army for so long. But yeah ultimately the romans weren't victorious, and even at the end of their empire the germans dealt the killing blow when they decided to mass-invade them. I see people often claiming that the germans lost vastly more, even though we know romans are unreliable when it comes to battlefield casualties. I can imagine that they drove the germans off in most engagements though, because they didn't want to get involved in prolonged melee. But counting more than a few hundred bodies at most in a forest while you're constantly on the move or on watch or in an engagement is practically impossible. Too much chaos.
And then Rome burned for its transgressions. Sic Semper Tyrannis medscum.
@Thirsty Sexpert Arminius wasn't killed by assassins. He was killed by other Germans. One was his father in law, whom he married his daughter against his will. He's the same man who warned Varus about Arminius.

My first Total War game was Medieval, one I kept returning to and played for ages. Have loved every Total War game since ,truly appreciating the different settings and feel of the games (even if the core gameplay remains recognizable ...which is -good!-)
Rome II I got very late because I had to have the Collector's Edition, have started playing and I'm loving it to bits :)
Teutoburg was a bust! Damn you for eternity, Varus!
"Yo baby, you ever been to the Teuroburg forest? 'Cause I'd like take my javeling to your face."
Although the video and the battle moreover have a power all their own, I can't get over how much I love the "Caesar-Augustus" narration at the beginning
It's been like a year since this trailer came out, need the official version!
I think unit leaders shouting orders out in battle would be fantastic. Also I hope warhorns are done well , they really add good atmosphere in SPQR mod be even better in Rome2. I hope the battle music more intense too, could do with more epicness in battle. Maybe music could blend between who's winning and losing.
Half of these animations dont even exist in game.
Okay, so I have Rome Total War I and am considering getting the second one. I know it got a lot of flak when it first came out, but I also know that it has been updated a lot since. Is it worth buying now? It's still the full $60. Should I wait until the price goes down? Any opinions would be helpful. Thanks.
David Jones don't get total war rome II
The Emperor edition is great you wont regret it ;)
The Creative Assembly has to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest game developer of this time. I tend to hear a lot of criticism at them, but when you look at the sheer technological innovation that goes into each game - every single one has a massive graphics overhaul, a massive AI overhaul, and countless other improvements - you can tell when these guys go to work each day, they put everything into it, and I think they should be seen as an example to be followed in the gaming industry.
This was one of the best trailers I've ever seen
2013 is the year of horror,To my wallet
Glad we can come to terms.
It was great debating with you.
I grew up playing the original Shogun and Medieval. Rome I was a breakthrough game for me as a kid and I remember watching the History Channel's Decisive Battles series promoting the game. I remember being a freshman in high school and I gave my mother money to pick up a copy while I was in Algebra class. When I heard that Rome II was to be released, I built a PC and ever since then I have played most, if not all, of the TW titles since then. Thank you C.A
armenius didnt kill varus, like its been shown in the game
true, he took is own life
Am I the only one who walks around yelling "QUINTUS VARUS GIVE ME BACK MY LEGIONS!!!" randomly during the day?
Out of curiosity what factors do you take account of in order for a faction to be considered "powerful" by your definition? What does it take? What requirements have to be satisfied to meet expectations?
The oldest finds of chain mail was in a Celtic chieftain's burial located in Ciumeşti, Romania, about the 3rd century BC.
Dude I'm still playing the first Rome.
Oh how hyped we were for this game...
I sincerely hope that they will have those general speeches at the beginning of the battles again.
CA When will see this graphics in actual game ? patch 25 or 30 ? orrrr 44 ?
this is possibly one of the most beautiful games iv'e ever seen, arrow trails aside we see in stunning detail roman armor and weapons, every individual soldier has his own AI soldiers will have looks of terror on their faces if their buddies are run over by elephants, battle cries when an enemy group routs, realistic naval battles, ramming, siege battles with siege towers, real siege weapons, units stay in real formation, armies of up to 40 legions/units, diplomacy, internal politics,...
Well, alot of bits look smoother than others in this trailer. My guess is that the smooth stuff is made in the engine, with the animations they'll use, but not directly what it will look like in the game.
Its nice to see Lorica hamata being used as well as Segmentata
Arminius = Quintillius SEGA successfuly ruined RTW2
General Varus = Creative assembly trying to resolve the situation
Germania = Angry fans and customers Revolting after they bought RTW2
Adiutrix Pia Fidelis
Wellington give me back my army!
Napoleon Bonaparte lmao
You mean
Ney! Give me back my Cavalry Ney!
To Total War Official :
I suggest the Menu of Historical Battles must have Battle of Angrivarian Wall , Battle of Idistaviso and Battle of Long Bridges .
that cinematic scene in the end is it from a movie or series?
It's from a game
we won't alexander dlc now!!!! not now. NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Top 10 anime betrayals.
I wonder what the combat animations are going to look like. Shogun 2 and Empire had some pretty awesome animations.
That's the problem. While a legion could very well have quickly re-deployed as soon as a gap was no longer needed, the phalanx would probably take more time in doing so, especially if they used the sarissa.
I'm not surprised that they started using thorakitai in their armies.
AAAHH I can't stand it! Creative Assembly give me back my legions!
whos here becuse of Netflix new show
It is such a different game now. And I just love it
The impact could have been enough that he loses his balance enough to fall off, since he doesn't seem to be holding on to any sort of reins. He also seems to go down at an angle instead of getting blown clean off the back of the horse.
Just wondering if a gtx 680 would play this on max settings with 60 fps ?.
If its not possible then what card would you suggest a gtx 690 ?.
What Genghis Khan had was heavily armored cavalry (both horse and rider armored from head to toe) that was comparable to a cataphract. The Cataphract was originally used to describe Persian/Middle Eastern heavy cavalry. But the term was expanded to include most of Eurasia, including the Eurasian Steppes. The late Western and Eastern Romans had heavy cavalry that were called Cataphracts...so the term is more or less correct when describing Mongolian or medieval Chinese heavy cavalry.
If this is the actual gameplay footage I really hope they give us the same camera tools that they use.
This battle is depicted in plenty of movies/documentary already. This is one of the more famous battle involving the Roman.
Not a cellphone in sight, just men enjoying the moment
What is the little video at the end is that the game or a film
yes, you can play as each faction in the grand campaign.
I heard you guys whent to Rome recentley are you going to put any of that in the game?
I love 1:10 - the Legionary goes for an epic Hollywood (Latiumwood?) charge moment and the Germanian's all "let me sing you the song of my people!" *SPEARINDAFACE*. Yeah, that was awesome.
This game is supposed to go from around 270 BC (the start time of the first game) to early 1st century AD. There doing a one turn per year thing this time.
Exactly, that is what I have been trying to tell this guy, but he seem to be suggesting that in order to be a great empire you aren't supposed to have big annihilating defeats.
Look fucking awesome!! But do they need a near 1 minute outro?
"VARUS! GIVE ME BACK MY LEGIONS!"
"No"
Not everyone lacks in education. Mostly everyone has quite the WPM these days 'bro'. You're so epic and original with your comeback, please share more creativity I'd love to learn more from you.
If you want info go to game's forums and see some new features
-Facial expressions
-New ambush system
If you are into tactics and or roman history yes, if you act fast you can get the Greek city state culture pack before next Tuesday (labor day/ third of September) also the neat TF2 items!
"Horses? Bah, who needs them when you've got a nice row of highly-trai-- OH FUCKING SHIT A CATAPHRACT!"
Please tell me you are thinking of porting for Mac??
the thing that made me love the first RTW game was the varietu and number of factions and units if they remove that it will make the game a lot less replayable
Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai introduced 40 unit armies. No doubt CA is going to implement it in Rome 2. Its good. It means I can make full compliment legions, lots of siege equipment if need be and extra spaces left over for reinforcements arriving into the battle.
What makes you say that? It will be pretty much be a rework of the same historical battle that was in the first game, except with a new engine, and some new features.
It is, in fact. You're free to point out the differences between the Battle of Teutoburg forest in Rome: Total War and what is shown in this trailer, I look forward to hearing it.
the beginning it's like the kill of the 9-TH from the centurion movie
TRUE. Especially the Cimbri. I would love to see that in some historical battles or so. Would be awesome and a perfect carry-over to the marius-reforms.
BTW: See -> Germania inferior -> Germania superior -> Germania magna.
сцена взята из фильма "Центурион"
scene taken from the movie "Centurion"
this needs to come out sooner
If you take the sheer scale of battles that will be possible, the graphics are pretty great.
0:46 Roman version of the square formation?
Gods, the music fits perfectly with the trailer! The level of epicness are at maximum!
Aged well
Considering the game is still in pre-alpha and that the battles consists of thousands of soldiers with new features making them interact with each-other and not just stand there, make these some damn good graphics.
''give me back my legions!'' pretty sure I saw/heard this on the national geographic channel.
I used to coin Shogun 2's "A cutting blooow!" and "A shameful display!" a lot to annoy people. Got a trend going in my school,
Line formations were still tightly packed units of men. Even a "square formation" is a tight close formation.
That is the best part. I get to make full complete legions now. (10 cohorts, 6 archers, 4 cavalry, 1 general) with extra space for reinforcements and siege weapons as needed.
I just hope the in-game economy system would allow the me and other players to be able to raise and support 28 Legions like the real Rome. :)
Hopefully we also get the option to name our legions. Historically, it was the emperors who gave legions their names and numerals.
0:33 is face is priceless!
Plus the Romance languages (Portuguese, Romanian, French, Spanish, and Italian) contain many of the same words that are pronounced virtually the same as their Latin predecessors. So in a more realistic viewpoint, Latin died as an official language (of a country), but has been reincarnated in many languages even in far off languages such as English. Fun fact: Angelo-Saxon (Very old English) is thought to have been closer to Proto-Iranian languages than German nowadays. (a.k.a Scythian/Sarmatian.)
it almost is. since well get our hands on it in a few months
They had the Barbarian Invasion expansion that represented that pretty well.
true =) that means Italian is derived from Latin in the same way American or British English derives from Old English. This means, even if the differences are great due to evolution of language, that Italian and Latin are the same language, evolved during the years (in a non-linear way, though)
Rome 1 had this battle as a historical battle separate from the main campaign
And the campaign in Rome 1 went from 270 BC to like 60 AD I think, or whenever the time limit runs out
that spear to the face was something serious
I know but they can do more and expand on it, in Medieval TW the map was just Mexico and some surrounding areas and the WTW map didn't go father west than the great plains and had only had the top part of South America. I feel like it's an important area of history that they just brushed aside as smaller side campaigns.
You can play as both. Find out which play style you like best and go from there.
I hope ur unit commanders get names and special attributes like generals . But thay probably die more often but you'd think twice on were and how you'd use them in battle.
when will all factions be revealed?
