*WAS JUST INFORMED THAT ISO FILE PLAYBACK AND MULTIREGION SUPPORT IS AN OPTIONAL $99 FEATURE*
Ridiculous.
It's a simple firmware update, but they have to be greedy.
As if it wasn't expen$ive enough.
@@MrX-zz2vk I would like to know if this player yields better picture quality with 4k Blu-ray playback compared to the Sony players.
@@asafblasbergvideographer Good question. Idk.
Great to see companies still releasing disc players. The future of physical media still strong!
It wasn't strong enough for Oppo Digital, despite their undeniable technical chops. Most of us knew they were a screaming bargain and it's possible that the bean counters were driven to some screaming of their own ;)
â@@arthurwatts1680Magnetar is the same manufacturer đ
Just because the players are being sold today doesnât mean the future is strong.
@@martinlutherkingjr.5582 I have seen somewhere recently (if anyone could help me) that the end of solid support (blu-ray) is planned for 2027. That's a very short time.
May be that's why there is money to do just before the end ?..

Wow this is awesome! Never heard of this brand. Thanks for taking the time to do this for the community Shane! Much appreciated! đ
Glad to see a new universal disc player on the market.
Beautifully done review I just love how you showing similar products to whatever you reviewing now and comparing them at onces it's just picking one from the other much easier than before keep up the good work
Love your reviews buddy. Always thorough and explains everything about the product.
Great review. Very thorough and clear.
One thought for the future though. You should pick up at least one SACD and one DVD-Audio just to be able to prove that this player (or other devices tested in the future) function as advertised.
I have both formats and it plays them superbly.
Seems like a very solid player. Nice review Shane
Thanks for the video! Great info about the Magnetar.
I've been so happy with my Panasonic ub9000 I don't see upgrading for a very long time.
You are right
Keep it. Panasonics tonemapping is amazing.
Well, good luck to you - many find that Panasonic UB9000 to be quite glitchy - mine had to go in for service after only 7 months. Iâm hedging my bets by having the Panasonic and the Oppo 203 And the Magnetar 800 đ

In future reviews if you can, open these bad boys up so we can see what's inside. I always get very skeptical when something is heavy, and I've seen products where there's just a big metal weight inside and the heaviness doesn't come from super-industrial components or whatever it is they want a person to think when they handle a heavy disc player. I personally don't think a player *needs* to be heavy unless you're trying to watch a disc rolling down the road in an RV or something.
Wonât be a surprise when the chips are from Oppo. It seems Oppo sold there IP to Reavon and other small manufacturers.

@@GameSack Since the last great 4K players are supposedly being discontinued this year (Panasonic ub9000, and the 820) These Chinese Oppo knock offs are our final stop! I hope they last.
You can see the internal construction in this review: czcams.com/video/xXJqYBm8aH8/video.html
I have a Panny UB9000 and my trusty old Oppo-203. The UB9000 is a terrific disc spinner but has some real shortcomings when it comes to playing various combinations of video files (can't play back E-AC3 or lossless audio encodes for example) while the Oppo-203 is still a solid disc UHD disc player that can handle almost any combination of video/audio encoded files that you can throw at. It also has a very good zoom function which is active on any discs or files, something that the Magnetar doesn't appear to have. $1600 plus an additional $99 for ISO playback seems awfully steep. I was lucky enough to get the Oppo at its $500 price before the company pulled the plug on making disc players. While, over the past few years, it had some HDMI handshake issues when passing Dolby Vision discs to Denon AVRs (X3700 and a test with a friend's X4700) and my LG OLED C7 TV, much of that has improved with the latest generation of Denons, in my case the X3800. The HDMI handshaking when playing DV is now more consistent with far fewer signal drops.
That's very nice. I really would like to get a 4k player maybe one day.. Great review like always...đđđŒ
This one is very expensive. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a lot of money to spend.
Thank you for the thorough review, Shane. Looks like a great product but Iâm sure a lot of folks will be wary of an uncommon brand. Still loving my Panasonic UB820. đ§đŒâđ
Brand aside, it's also like 4 times as expensive as the Panasonic UB820, the 4K blu-ray player that's universally considered to the be best value for the money. And when it comes to watching 4K blu-rays... the upscaling tech and HDR improvement tech are still better on the Panasonic UB820. So... if it's just a 4K blu-ray player you want, this isn't the device for you. And even the UB820 might be overkill. Most movies have Dolby Vision and the HDR improvement stuff only works for regular HDR, so you'd be just as good with the UB420 or the Sony equivalent for most movies.
@Federico Giuliano I love my 9000u Just wish I could afford more 4k movies. I was at Walmart yesterday and there 4k section is not to bad. To bad Best Buy is trying to shaft the consumer with their TotalTech garbage.
@Federico Giuliano Those are good spots but I was surprised by Walmart's 4k selection. Hopefully DVD 4k discs are not dead. What brand of DVD player do you have?
Overkill do not waste your money
@@MrJustmitch Some people like "Overkill" Look how many millions of people pay way over overkill for the wheels they drive. Plus, this unit evidently plays I believe every known file out there. That is pretty impressive to me.
what made oppos great was the 7.1 analog output paired with an HDMI input letting the unit double as a full surround pre/pro.
...especially the HDMI INPUT. Up to the 20x mocels they actually offered TWO inputs. For someone like me with an all-analog rig and ARC-only TV, they are absolutely vital to obtain full uncompressed surround sound.
Sadly...for some reason only Oppo has ever offered them....even the top-dog Mag UDP900 does not have these inputs :(
I'm on a lookout for a new player , this one seems really good the only issue is not enough USB ports ,there should be at least 3 or 4 for that price ,since I've got alot of movies on my external drives.
I used to use thumb drives but bought a dell 2tb external drive and that is what i use for all my stuff for my rips and it works great with my oppo and I actually bought another 4tb one for my computer. Western digital, 2tb is $70, 4tb is $130. All the space you should ever need.
Thank you Mr. Shane!!
If it looks like an Oppo, performs like an Oppo, is packed like an Oppo...is it safe to assume that "Magnatar" is just a fancy rebrand to get a buzz going again???
Probably
I was thinking the same !
The Oppo has sub out and also DSP
And if I'm not mistaken can be used as a pre amp
Exactly what I was thinking.
The "800" in the name sounds like a Sony to me.
Great video Shane, and like some of your other comments have never heard of this brand. I own the oppo UDP-203 and the menu and display functions are identical, is there any links between the two companies? I love the oppo, itâs nice and quick, quiet and never has any problems. Although if someone wants to pay lots of money for my oppo, I might sell it and purchase the Magnetar.
I got the reavon x200 player which is similar to this player itâs a pain in the butt to update the player when thereâs one and you get noice from the player playing back certain disks be interesting to know if this player does the same
He Shane, nice review but you didn't show the info at the front when you play a disc? I would like to see which info is provided when you play a 4K disc. Is it playing time, remaining time, name of the disc etc etc? Thanks from The Netherlands âđ»
Thanks Shane for this vers interesting test and as well for you voice dĂ©bit, making the video clear without subs for the French that I am đ
Looks like an awesome player. But my ub820 is looking like a bargain at this point. I run a Parasound Halo integrated powering my LR in HT bypass mode for movies and just the Halo for 2 channel. It has a balanced input so this unit would be cool to plug into that for cds.
So glad i held out. This is exactly what i was looking for since no none used oppo is no longer available. I bet those used prices start coming down now. **purchase made
Wow!! Really does look like an Oppo bd 203âŠ
Would love a direct showdown!âïžđ€đ
I think nobody is going to showdown against any Oppo since it's been dead for like 7/8 years. Was the best of the best at the time but come on.
Nice video thank you ! Mine arrives tomorrow :) quick question about audio through HDMI. Would you select Bitstream for the sound system to decode or due to the high level of audio hardware from the player let him do it ? I use a Bose soundbar 900 with surround add on etcâŠ. Thanks
Great job and still waiting on the PSA S2112 subwoofer review? đđ
Looks good. Would love to get one. It would be nice to just have one player to play my media collection on instead of the three players I currently use. đđŒ
Actually, it's better because you won't be stressing just one player for all disc playback. It will last longer.
@@dan_hitchman007 yeah, that a good way of looking at things but Iâm just always interested in new players.
Nice video Shane! Do you plan on doing a video on the new Zidoo UHD5000? I would love to know how the 2 players compare especially when it comes to the sound!
Share how does the zoom work when you are viewing a 4k Blu ray or a regular Blu ray?
High Shane
Thanks for your review. It seems to me that the Magnetar supports only samba 1.1. Do you have tried to access network storage with DLNA or UPnP and if so, can you play the same files as on SMB?
MAGNETAR North America is offically established!đđđ
Does this have 2D to 3D conversion like the Oppo 203?
Great review by the way.
Interesting demonstration of Magentar. I have a question. Is it possible to read ISO files from the LAN? If so, which media server did you use? Thank you very much.
Would love to hear the feedback on this player when compared to the Pioneer UDP-LX500 or even the UDP-LX800
Shane, have you tested an mkv container that has Dolby Vision yet? Did it playback with Dolby Vision Enabled on the UHDTV? What exactly do you get for that $99 file support playback? Is it another firmware or something that unlocks it? Thanks.
WOW! I missed out on the Oppos when new. Got the Reavon X200 and I really like it and does everything I wanted it to do but that interface for media files is painfully slow. I ended up getting a Zappiti because of that. This seems to be what I was hoping for. Oh well. I will live with what I have for a while.
I really like my Panasonic 9000u I purchased from Value Electronics out East. It is over 90% of what I was expecting.
I ended up buying a Magnetar UDP800 based on this review
How are you liking it? Is there anything about it you dislike?
@@altodomino7859 Other than the high cost i have nothing bad to say about it its a much better player than my old Oppo BDP-103 from 2014
Very nice but it comes with a hefty price. I guess I will stick with my Panasonic 820 which is an awesome blu Ray player.
I have just bought one of these. I agree with your review. The only issue I have noticed so far is that the volume output when playing CD's, SACD, etc is lower than I am used to. This means cranking up the volume on my AV receiver. When switching to TV, DVD etc, I have to remember to reduce the volume on my receiver otherwise it comes blasting out. I wonder why there is this discrepancy? Any ideas?
Oppo seems to have weaker volume on lower frequencies (those that go into subwoofer). I wonder is that the case here, tooâŠ
This is quite detailed. Thanks for this introduction.
I own a 2K Oppo 103 that works great as a SACD/DVD-Audio playback device, and 2K content off it still looks great. All my audio decoding is done through HDMI out, so never needed the 205. I can also buy a very capable 4K UHD disc player for $600 CAD. This new do-it-all player costs $2,000 CAD in Canada, plus tax. So for existing Oppo owners, I can't see anyone buying this.. just get an additional 4K player for the video. I guess if I had money to burn and wanted a single solution, this would make sense. Maybe when Magnetar lowers their player to $1,500 CAD will it be a viable option.
Didn't see DVD AUDIO listed in the Magnetar website!
So is this your new favorite player of price isn't an object? Also thanks for the video!
I have the Cambridge player, which Iâve used maybe three times, and this is almost identical to it.
Still have my Oppo 203 that I purchased when it 1st came out. Wish you had the 203 there for a direct comparison. I wonder if the audio section of the Magnetar on par with the Oppo 203 or 205?
Keep it, valuable
@@user-mp5xk46zq1j-io5- Definitely! I sold my 103 to buy the 203. If I had known Oppo was getting out the business I would have kept the 103.
Overpaid for my Oppo 203, but I have no complaints

Will it play region A PAL discs?
If i am running a NZ7 and strictly using a player for physical media would u guys recommend this or the panasonic ub9000? Does this have all the hdr frame adapt stuff the ub9000 does? Thxs for vid!
You wouldnât use the hdr features in the Panasonic if you have an NZ7. It uses its own frame adapt.
Nice - OPPO lives! Pity it doesnât support 3d and there is no multichannel out, but everything else more than compensate for that. When you opened the box it really felt like opening an OPPO box⊠then the menus - 100% the same. Thanks for great and informative review!
3D is supported, it has the Blu-ray 3D logo on the box (see at 00:20) and there is a 3D menu 3:32 and 3D ISO playback 6:12, but he has no 3DTV.
@@car103d Wow, thatâs great. I misunderstood, sorry.
@@66brave no problem! Anyway a standard 3d Blu-ray player FHD is cheap (or a 4K digital player supporting 3d iso and frame packing), or even less expensive if used.
@@car103d I thought it must have 3D. Seems there are now some new theatre releases in 3d so it is not completely dead. I would of opted for a Epson new short throw, but no 3d support (bummer). It can't cost that much more for that chip per unit, maybe $50.00 COME ON EPSON!!!
@@Mr.HotRod for Epson I would consider a long throw, HC2250. (TW5820 in EU)

Can this do subtitle shift? I run a CIH setup and use my oppo to push the subtitles up out of the black bars and into the picture
Shane, I'm very curious about the Magnetar brand. My search results for the company name didn't return much meaningful information. I want to know more about the company before I give them $1600. Have they ever made any other performance oriented A/V products? Will they be around in 5 years to provide customer support? Software updates? Parts for repair?
Get a Panasonic UB9000 player instead, if you want a well build player, that will last a long time. These chinese knockoffs, are way to overpriced. Your just paying for a fancy looking heavy chassis.
does it support NFS Manager (MAC) for file sharing?
How does the PQ compare to Zappiti?
Shane how is the tone mapping with this Magnetar. Unit Iâm using it with a short throw projector and sometimes the tone mapping was not very good except on my Panasonic player.
Panasonic is the only one that offers tone mapping.
But it doesn't play multi region blu rays right?
Wish you showed us the inside. If it's like the Reavon, with barely anything in there, or if it's like the Panasonic 9000 and Oppo, which actually got some proper hardware inside.
There are videos showing the inside. It looks like an Oppo, for the most part.
Lmao seeing the internals of a Reavon is like eating a filet mignon and then being it was rat meat.
Shane, is this player DEAD silent during 4k disc playback like the Panasonic 9000?
Hey man ! Huge fan. I bought this on your recommendation, curious though I donât think Iâm getting Dolby atmos. Even in the video when you say youâre getting it, it just says Dolby audio. I donât think itâs the same. Please let me know if Iâm mistaken. I have it set to bitstream and I have the correct components. All my other gear gets Dolby atmos.

Does it playback True HD and dts-ma on the network playback?
Yes. If it reads and bitstreams DTS: X and Dolby Atmos tracks it has to. They are contained in those lossless shells.
Wow! I MIGHT just be looking at my next 4K Blu ray player. Great review Shane. I wonder if this is Oppo re-Branded? Hmmm
Looks that way.
How would you compare the sound between the ub9000 and the magnetar please
If you are bitstreaming to a surround processor... the same. It either works or it doesn't. Maybe if there is a jitter clock added, but you would barely notice the difference.
So this Magnetar seems to be a more refined and improved OPPO UDP-205 clone with a better GUI than the Reavon model you reviewed several months ago. I Wish it had been available on the market 6 months ago when I had to buy a new UHD BR player then. But both this Magnetar and the Reavon cost more than ANY of the Oppos ever did! So i kind of resent the price they expect us to pay to get their OPPO version, especially with the newly announced downloadable extra feature option. That Should be a free firmware update.
Nice premium finish. Wish it had rack ears.
Just get a vented shelf, so there is support all around the chassis.
I respect the value of physical media, no doubt. However what is the difference between the cheapest and most expensive Blu-ray player? They both play the disc and it's digital so it simply works or doesn't... Right?
Build quality is the major difference.
Does this detect the dolby vision flag and auto engage it when you stream from a NAS? (M2TS/ISO files)
I canât why it wouldnât.
@@David25522 it doesn't on the reavon

Where this one made China.
I'm still rocking the Sony 800m2 and it plays all disk formats as well and was cheap for everything it can do. It looks and sounds excellent too. If this isn't completely stupid priced would probably make a great upgrade or replacement if the Sony ever dies.
Hi Dartman, I have the same Sony as you have and I'm very happy with is. But i can't understand that Sony has that horrible looking interface. That's the only thing that bothers me a lot when I turn on the Sony. Why don't they fix that...
I have the Sony and it does anything I need it to. Only annoying thing is the damn Dolby Vision switching not being automatic!!!!
Sony does not support HDR 10+ so not all disc formats are supported. Also the 800m2 has auto Dolby Vision it is the 700 model that you have to turn it on and off.
@@gijsbulthuis4656 I doubt they will bother fixing the interface. The player was dirt cheap and works well so doubt they care. I guess they still make new ones but with everything going digital and streaming who knows how much longer. I do have both sacd and DVD audio here so needed a universal player and when I got a TV that supported Dolby Vision I upgraded to the M2 and gave my original X800 to a buddy that got a Samsung 4k TV. HDR 10 plus isn't on my radar as like said my Sony Z9K doesn't support it but it supports the other formats and who knows if they can or will add it later.
@@lanceheaps581 good point if you have the Samsung. I have the 800M2 you definitely have to turn DV on and off manually otherwise it just outputs DV all the time.

Does this player offer any such feature in regards to tone mapping. ? The 9000 has recently been discounted here in the UK and I was just about to buy when I seen this.
Stick with the ub9000 !! The hdr optimizer alone is unmatched compared to all these so called new 4k players that want you to pay the price of a kidney for them. I dont know what all these unheard of brand makers are smoking!

@@rindershow212 I went with the Panasonic 9000
So, what does it really add to a Panasonic 9000 series? I got a separate high-end SACD player already so excluding that format?
Nothing
It adds playback of copied files with lossless audio. The Panasonic, Sony's, and LG's would not allow access to lossless audio on copied file formats due to copy protection restrictions.
@@dan_hitchman007 Do we have to order the product already Region Free modified ?
If I remember well on Oppo it is accessible via a remote control code, so I can't see myself paying an extra $99.
Already the retail price is very high for a UHD player already amortized since not much of fundamental new characteristics...
For just raw 4K UHD Disc playback I don't think its going to beat the Panasonic UB9000. Also, every mediatek chipset 4K Player has lipsync drift issues, so it would be interesting if these guys are able to tackle that issue or not. All Mediatek chips players also have a buffering issue that at some point in a disc can cause movies to lock up for a few seconds. This happened on the Oppo and always happens on the Reavon. Again, is this brand able to fine tune the software to overcome some of these playback and usability issues? Ive been through 3 Reavon players and all have stuttering and lockup issues, so...I'm glad new players are coming out, but to actually beat the video processor that's in the Panasonc Player I just cant see that being done with a mediatek chip that's years old at this point.
Which Oppo player did those issues happen on??
I've had lip sync issue with my Panasonic 9000, so.....
Thankfully, the Panasonic has an option to adjust the lip sync delay manually. 80 to 100ms delay always fixes it
@Federico Giuliano Yes, it's 1.69. Other Panasonic owners have reported the same issue on the 4kbluray subreddit
@@PSYCHOV3N0M 203.
@@altodomino7859 I overcome it by setting the delay on my receiver. I send one HDMI to my TV and one to my receiver. Audio arrives faster than the image due to processing, so some delay will always be needed. On an LGC9 OLED, it's 11ms to 12ms and that fixes lipsync entirely for me.
What about against the Sony x800m2 for 4k disc detail and color?
Panasonic is the best, followed by the Magnetar.
Wow this is the closest yet to the Oppo. Right down to the menu and even font is exactly the same! Too bad no one's figured out the best feature of the oppo...THE FREAKING HDMI INPUTS. For someone like me who has an all analog system that is an absolute godsend. Plus this has no analog audio outs like the 205 does.
Very impressive it plays ISO files without the simple hack you have to do on the Oppo now... and is definitely the best bet in a post-Oppo world. Keep in mind, you can find the similarly equipped 203 for a lot less than the 205 and probably even than this... and it's still a potent choice.
No mention of the all-inportant DAC they use?
I would suggest getting this now before some moron on Amazon blabs about its ISO ability and they kill it like they did with Oppo.
I'm sure those who own an Oppo feel the same as me. Seeing what looks like an updated Oppo setup screen just makes me very sad they got out of the business because they were the Masters at it.
@Scott Muhlbaier - I agree; OPPO was the Master! I have an Oppo BDP-93, the model that does NOT block ISO files or my copied backups..... and it STILL works great and is my go-to blu ray player!
Does it play different reigions like the reavon?
Apparently not, unless there is a hack available. Many Chinese players have one, you just have to discover it.
Are there any 4k players that just adjust automatically for best picture and sound so you don't have to remember all the different settings?
Panasonic dp-ub820 automatically switches to Dolby Vision when the Blu-ray disc with Dolby Vision plays. For sound, Iâm not aware of anything that can do that, however if youâre going to listen to an audio format like Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD, then set it to Bitstream in the audio settings, otherwise just choose PCM.
@@davidbenning10 Thankyou I will check it out iam looking for a new 4k player.
@@h.jjimenez700 Nice. Panasonic 4K Blu-ray players are considered to be some of the best at playing 4K and making the picture look as good as possible, it also has a button on the remote called HDR Optimizer which can make the HDR picture pop out even more. Also, if you donât need Dolby Vision, then the Panasonic dp-ub420 player is the exact same 4K player with the same processor inside, except that no Dolby Vision and you can save $250. Itâs ultimately up to you what you want. Good luck finding a good 4K player!
@@davidbenning10 Thankyou David you have been really helpful.
I currently have the ub820 and itâs dead. Time for a new player. Would recommend this or the Reavon 100? Iâm only playing back discs. Nothing on file and soley movies

@@therealshanelee or the Panasonic 9000?
Looks like my modified Oppo. Also use Panasonic 820. Does this play USB ? My Oppo plays my 4K original Star War downloaded on usb. Hey, Han shot first. Glad new 4K players available
You know what ? Keep your UHD players. They are definitive.
Just a question, why people still compare this an universal player with other non universal player, im just courios to know why
Hi Shane, in my bedroom i have an old Samsung blu-ray player, in the living room i have the UB 9000 Panasonic Region B, i am missing out on quite a lot because of us ecclusives and region coding, Thank god, for Point Break coming july 5, 4k/steelbook with Dolby Atmos.
Is the region free upgrade for DVD only or is it also for Blu-Ray?
Both
@@therealshanelee I am really interested getting one then but i am still very worried about support, Oppo still has support for their players and they stopped making players in 2018
Initial reaction reminds me of my Oppo player
another Oppo "replacement" enters the arena lol
Looks like a nice quality 4k disc player how much is the unit
Around $1,600. An Oppo clone for an extravagant 3x increase in price.
The menu is exactly as my Oppo 203. So this is the "son of Oppo".
I have an âoldâ OPPO BDP-103. This menu does look somewhat similar.
They stole the software. Just like the other overpriced Oppo clones.
@@Svante Either that. Or OPPO sold the software off cheap to pay off debt.
Very nice
Good morning how does it compare to the Reavon
This is better.
I have a Sony 4K player and a Samsung and neither can play some of the newer codecs or audio files it pisses me off and it's impossible to add decent apps to the menu so it's missing a ton of common apps now.
Samsung TV's and players are garbage.
Their phones and tablets are amazing.
Does the UDP-800 play 3D Discs, like the UDP-900?
All Blu-ray players play 3d discs.
@@therealshanelee Are you sure Shane? All 3D Blu-ray discs state on them that you need a player that will play them back to a display that accepts 3D. Panasonic had 3D Blu-ray Players and 3D Plasma TV's. Just Video Walls Panels will play 3D movies with out having to wear 3D Glasses according to them.
Ah! I think weâve found the company that bought whatever Oppo had left when it ceased operation. The playerâs menus - especially the top menu and the settings menu - are exactly those to be found on my Oppo 203.
Nice 4k player is there a region free version?
I don't have any non US discs to try.
Behind the label it says A that it is North American region but it is not multiregion
Can someone please explain who exactly is the target audience for the Oppo 205 4K Blu-ray player??
I want to help my friend build a high end home theater when he moves into his own house later this year. I've been looking at the Oppo 203 or Panasonic UB9000 but I'm trying to better understand if the Oppo 205 is "needed" for enjoying 4K Blu-ray movies with Dolby Atmos ceiling speakers, etc.
The only reason you need the Oppo 205 and the massive price it commands is for Multichannel analog audio out. NOTHING compares even four years later (including this) to its incredibly potent analog board. On the digital side it also has a USB DAC input so you can run DSD for example right off your computer.
If you don't need either of that, the 203 it's just as good on the digital front as the 205. Hope that helps!
