  • "We are facing an existential crisis on our blue planet. In only the last 50 years we have lost more than 50% of wildlife in the world. Even the iconic and majestic tiger shark is facing threats from humans. Overfishing, coastal development, pollution and poaching are causing the decline of shark populations, globally. However, there is hope. In The Bahamas and other countries sharks have become one of the most valuable tourist attractions. The charisma of these Striped Hunters draws on the fascination of humans brave enough to leave their misperceptions behind. Every time a diver decides to spend their dollars locally in a jurisdiction where sharks are protected it is a vital contribution of keeping them protected.
The goal of this short film is to highlight the beauty of freediving and respectfully interacting with the enigmatic tiger sharks of Tiger Beach in Grand Bahama. Hopefully we can inspire a few ocean enthusiasts to contribute to the establishment of Shark Sanctuaries and Marine Protected Areas by making motivated and consciouss travel decisions."

    An important Safety Note:
We never touch animals or plants underwater. We are guests in their realm. When diving with sharks I strongly recommend you follow this rule for safety reasons and a matter of respect. There are instances when it’s acceptable for a professional shark diver to guide a shark physically away from yourself or another diver.
Sharks are incredibly curious and intelligent animals. To investigate they may bump a diver in order to get a better sensory understanding of what you are. For this reason we recommend to have a large camera or another object to create space between you and the shark.
At times when working as freedivers we do not carry a large camera. Some sharks are not impressed by a confident energy and determined body posture. If a shark like that approaches me, I may reguide it by reguiding it with a gentle push on the snout. We only do this, if necessary - we do not seek these situations out and try to avoid them as much as we can.
Until a while ago I did not endorse any depiction of reguiding a shark. However, there’s a dynamic in this space that has forced me to change my mind: On the extreme end of the spectrum many depict sharks as maneating monsters, while others exploit their cutification by making them seem like our friends. I don’t condone excessive touching, especially when it’s obvious that it was initiated by a diver without safety necessetating it. I particularly don’t likey putting sharks into tonic immobility for display reasons. However, it’s important to realize that these are powerful predators that demand respect. Respectfully interacting with sharks requires skill, training and experience. We hope that our film depicts a respectful and professional way of shark diving - emphasizing that touching a shark is a last resort.
