  • Electronic warfare is essential on the modern battlefield.
    This is (hopefully) the first video in a long series dedicated to electronic warfare.
    In this video we focus on SIGINT, COMINT and ELINT.

    As someone who’s always struggled to understand this stuff, one way of describing antennaes that helped me understand their passive nature was hearing them described as to a signal what a lens is to a light source

  • @TheRealBanana
    @TheRealBanana Před 4 měsíci +12

    An easy way to think about antenna gain is to compare it to an antenna that radiates in all directions. If you have 1 watt of energy going into that specific antenna, that 1 watt gets sent in all directions at once. If you put that 1 watt into a directional antenna, all that energy goes just in one direction and the receiver sees a higher signal level. Its like cupping your hands over your mouth to shout. You aren't amplifying your voice, you are just making it all go in one direction instead of everywhere.

    The first 20 minutes of your presentation reminded me of a course I had at university, EE 342 or 344 -- Digital Data Communications I, that I did very well in, having had interests in Control Theory and a great class/teacher of analysis in the frequency domain.
    My grade-point average climbed dramatically over the final two years of undergraduate engineering courses, much to my surprise and to my advisor's amazement. I struggled through the mathematics and physics during those first two years, but once I began to study practical EE, everything began to make sense
    It was the year 1980 (+- a year or two), when I finally got to those upper division electrical engineering courses. I traveled the long road to get there. Live and learn.
    I do hope youll have a follow-up to this introduction. Antenna length and structure is essential to maximizing S/N whether receiving or sending a signal. I'd be interested in learning how the integrated computing power of the F-35 and the hive manages signal ID. Much can be done between pulses. Also, how does the AESA act in the system, can the "sensors" be optimized to improve signal quality via clever engineering/software tricks that tune these components to discriminate between the many hopping radar techniques used by the bad guys.
    Many more questions. i hope to learn more... Merci, Monsieur.

      @@Millennium7HistoryTech I've seen the most of them. I don't catch everything, but many. What I enjoyed here was, well, constructed more like the EE courses I studied years ago, and it appeared that you beginning to describe a systems model of the system, beginning with this introduction to signal processing.
      Perhaps it's my own bias, but for me, the pieces began to connect when beginning from this perspective.
      Anyway, I'll be looking forward to the next piece, and thank you.

      I was also looking at the time count of the video and roughly 3/5 of the video dealt with basic physics until we actually started with EW.

  • @alanwilson175
    @alanwilson175 Před 4 měsíci +1

    Nice explanation. Mostly correct. I think one item that is neglected is the directional parameter for the receiver antenna. One receiver and one antenna may "stare" in one direction continuously, and cover a lot of spectrum all the time. That comes to 2 dimensions, one for frequency and one for time. But then in an environment like the Black Sea, it may be important to also "stare" in all the directions over the surface of the sea - 360 degrees. So we add a 3rd dimension for azimuth direction. If we also want to cover airborne signals, we might also need to cover elevations too - another dimension gets added and we are up to 4 dimensions. But it does not end there. We might also want to include polarization. This would be an additional dimension. When you think about the problem of signal detection, it gets quite complex. We did not even consider various spread spectrum technologies that distribute signals across time, frequency, space, and polarization, in order to avoid hostile detection, or jamming.

    I agree completely when you mention other CZcams videos. They always delve into the topic through a historical lens and the analysis is narrow and shallow. They neglect to tell how, why and most importantly nitty gritty math and science behind the technology, even when talking about modern systems in which the science is THE most important thing to talk about. When looking for well made military oriented video with a high production value from the biggest channels on CZcams, you are more likely to find a video that is, in all intents and purposes, a history lecture rather than a science video. Don't get me wrong, I do not dislike those videos but most videos I have seen, with a few exceptions, is at least 60% historical exposition. But alas, those are the videos that get all of the reaction videos because history is more easy to digest and understand in a short video than science. I've been trying to recommend your channel for reaction videos from other people on CZcams because this is the information we need to better understand the MODERN battlefield which has evolved since the romanticized battlefields of WW2 and even Desert Storm which happened before I was even born over 30 years ago.

  • @everTriumph
    @everTriumph Před 3 měsíci

    In WW2 and ongoing, the signal intelligence took mainly two forms. The first was an intercept of a message which could possibly be decoded. The second was just monitoring the origin and volume of traffic in an area. A lot can be learned just from considering this traffic data. It was one of the reasons a dummy army was set up prior to D-day with a very active radio scheme. The convenience of radio communications was a big window into enemy operations. Phone lines were more problematic.

    I have a friend now who did this for a while in the air force and other civilian government rolls, it amazing seeing his man cave and some of the toy projects he is getting up to, its amazing to see what a $10 Arduino board and the right radio gear can do, he has set up a system that's 100mw, gps, powered by RF if its near something like wifi or just a small battery that's meshed and can transmit and receive over 10,000 KM if on 4meg or vhf over about 5/ 10 km.
    its can RT/TX small text messages with time stamps and gps location, very handy for locating that lost puppy or something lol
    Similar gear when you know the someone has arrived because basic signal tracking/ detection that's received from their phone.
    so for example in a large crowd at a political event these things would be scattered everywhere could locate and ID a person/ device and map and triangulate its location using their phone / watch / car with sim card wifi Bluetooth etc
