  • Custom Jon Boat 2 Year Update
    In today's video, we're giving you a performance update of our modded Tracker 1236 wide jon boat. It's been 2 years now since we bought the jon boat, and many things have changed since that day. Our goal is to share some of our thoughts about the boat itself, our usage, the modifications, and why you should consider buying one yourself!
    We highly recommend this boat for beginners. As a relatively cheap entry-level boat, you can easily learn your essential boating skills without having to worry about damaging a more expensive boat. Your range is limited with the jon boat, so you can also stay close to shore to practice your navigation skills and learn your local landmarks. The small form factor also makes the jon boat easy to launch and clean, which means you can get out on the water much more often.
    Stability is another great feature on the jon boat. Although we sometimes shift weight on the boat too quickly sometimes, we still consider it to be incredibly stable. It handles boat wake very well and its hardly ever a choppy ride to our destination.
    The best feature about the jon boat is the custom modifications we've installed over the years. Overall, they have performed well, but continue watching the video for more details about each mod we've installed!
    If you have any questions about the jon boat, feel free to leave them in the comments below!

    I have always had a 1232 aluminum jon boat with a 30lb thrust trolling motor for fishing in our local streams, lakes and ponds, both public and private. It fits in the smallest of trucks and vans, and even in some larger SUV's. Two young, strong people can handle it just fine at put-ins and take-outs, and pretty much launch it like a canoe. Last year I bought a new Suzuki 6 HP outboard for it. I'm getting old now, and therefore am shopping for a trailer so I can launch it the easy way. Thanks for the video.

      Lots of people look to bigger boats for fishing and just think bigger is better. I started on a motor canoe, went up to a big fancy center console and came back to a jon boat. If you REALLY need a big boat, that’s cool. But if you want a big boat to have a big boat, then I’d try a jon, even a used one as the all aluminum construction doesn’t really change with age. Feel free to go big or go home but sometimes a small boat gets the job done the best

    Very good advice for anyone who may be thinking of upgrading from a kayak to a jon boat for a little more room and speed. The floor mats make things flatter to stand on and quieter to not scare fish. I have a 15' Mako Pro skiff also. I go through the same cleaning as your big boat although not as long due to smaller boat. So spraying down the jon boat and forgetting about it is really a bunch easier. Good video and good maintenance points for those who are trying to decide what type of boat to buy.

    • @TheReelStrike
      @TheReelStrike  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for watching! Hadn't even thought about the noise dampening properties of the floor mats. As someone who has grown up near the water, I find the jon boat to be that perfect in-between for a kayak and an offshore boat. You get the best of both worlds: mobility/ease of use paired with space/range. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

    You could replace the bottom members only of your casting deckframe with cedar members. Those other framing components will not encounter water very often, so they are not likely to contribute significantly to any corrosion issues. I like this video. Several useful bits of information, particularly the use of commercial kitchen mats.
    PS: if you drop something, i.e. hook, sinker,etc. It will be trapped in the holes of the mat, and thereby making it easier to find and retrieve. Get a small magnet tool to avoid fishing hooks out of these holes with your finger.
    I'll be building a similar plywood version of the 1236 this summer from plans I have, and can incorporate some of your good ideas into it. Thanks for doing the vid?

    • @TheReelStrike
      @TheReelStrike  Před 3 lety +1

      We've never considered removing it all together, but initially we wanted to put a hatch on it and make it storage. Though, we found out that underneath the seat is actually a block of foam that helps with buoyancy so decided against it. I'm sure its definitely something you can do to free up space on the jon boat, I would just keep in mind that by removing some of the foam it might lower the maximum safe weight capacity.

    Great video! I just bought a G3 1232 jon boat, you gave me ideas as well as answered some of my questions.
    Question: Did you exceed the weight rating with gear and passengers? I know weight ratings are always on the conservative side.

    • @TheReelStrike
      @TheReelStrike  Před 3 lety +1

      With 2 people and all of our gear, we get pretty close to the total weight limit but we don't pass it. The boat still travels well when it's at full load and I wouldn't worry about it sinking, but I wouldn't bring on a third boater without removing a good chunk of gear to compensate. Still, it's better to be on the safe side with the weight limit!

    • @TheReelStrike
      @TheReelStrike  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks! We're both about 150 lbs. The boat is pretty stable in our eyes. It can handle wake like a champ and it planes very well. The only bad thing we have noticed is that a sudden shift in weight on the boat will tilt it very harshly and suddenly, causing the other person to lose their balance if not careful.
      One time we were on the boat checking out a crocodile we spotted in the area and Junior grabbed onto the front seat, only for the clamp to lose its grip on the bench. Suddenly he was on the floor of the boat, and I nearly took a dip in with the croc! The small size of the boat just doesn't accommodate for sudden weight shifts. But other than that, it's very solid!

    Question: I’ve got a 12’ Lowe Aluminum boat with a Mod V Hull. I’ve never owned anything more than a electric trolling motor. I recently purchased a 4hp Tohatsu 4 stroke and every forum or group people are telling me I wasted my money and I’ll go maybe 1-2mph faster than the 45lb min kota I usually use. Think that’s a fair assessment?

    • @jasonmmccallister
      @jasonmmccallister Před 3 lety

      Side note. I’m debating doing the 6hp carb swap sense apparently the Tohatsu 4,5,6 are same motors except the propeller and the carb and it seems to be a common mod.

    • @TheReelStrike
      @TheReelStrike  Před 3 lety

      Hey Jason, thanks for reaching out!
      I'm not too familiar with Tohatsu's products, but I wouldn't necessarily call your purchase a waste of money. It really depends on a variety of factors like what waters you boat in (Ocean vs. Lake), what speeds you want to reach, how far you travel, and what mods you have on your boat. I'll give you some insight to how we use our boat:
      We have a 6hp Mercury motor and reach speeds between 13-18 mph. While that wouldn't do much good to get us out on the reefs, it still suits our needs because we fish at nearby docks, canals, and mangrove areas. We plan to install an electric trolling motor in the near future to help us move quieter without spooking the fish. The Mercury motor will handle the traveling, while the electric motor will handle the finesse positioning. This type of division of functionality would help justify your purchase.
      The 6hp gets the job done because we need the power to accommodate the extra weight on the boat (2 people + mods). If you're fishing solo and in calm waters, a 4hp could do the job just fine. If you're boating in a small body of water, an electric motor may be all you need. It's all situational, which is why I would take what the forum commenters said with a grain of salt.

    • @jasonmmccallister
      @jasonmmccallister Před 3 lety

      @@TheReelStrike thanks for your response! Tohatsu makes Mercury outboards. From my research they’re basically the same motor but Tohatsu makes their own branded one then makes them for Mercury with their name.
      I have the ability to purchase a carb/prop kit to basically make the 4hp the same as the 6hp because apparently the only difference is the carb and prop. But I’ll see how the 4hp does first.
      I usually fish medium to larger lakes. 7 miles end to end to 20 miles end to end but never really cover the whole lake.
      My boat is 110lbs, add myself, motor and gear and total weight is about 400lbs (no decks or big heavy mods). I think I’ll be fine solo but may struggle a little if I bring a friend.
      Anyways thanks for your input and love the videos!

      @josecruz-peraza5286 Před 3 lety

      Jason McCallister Jason McCallister You are right on the Mercury and Tohatsu being the exact same motor, and they are both reliable ones at that. I would definitely recommend trying out the 4hp and see how it rolls but the 6hp carb swap would definitely help with covering more of your lake. We actually have a video on this channel showing speed tests with the 6hp Mercury and different weights (not including the boat) if it helps.
