  • Hey guys! Welcome back to the channel!
    In this build series we'll be showing you the process of converting the original 2.5 NA Diesel engine to a more modern 300Tdi.
    It was easier to buy a whole vehicle for this swap and i'm sure we'll do something crazy with it in the future!

    @bungfupanda8936 Před rokem +2

    I've done this conversion many times, if you'd have used the R380 out of the disco everything would've lined up in the engine bay, easier exhaust etc, but you would have had to cut the engine mounts off of the chassis & fabricate & weld on new mounts further forward. Some of the last 2.5 NAD Defenders supplied to the MOD had short first motion shaft R380 gearboxes with the shorter LT77 bell housing👍

      I'm wanting to do this conversion to my 1983 County station wagon but am a little confused on the best way to go your comment has helped 👍 isn't the r380 a better gearbox anyway? Would I have room to fit the aircon?... not sure if the rear axle with disc br
      akes would be worth swapping also? 🤯 cheers

      @bungfupanda8936 Před rokem

      @@leeaitken2592 You're better off sourcing a disc braked Salisbury axle from a later Defender, the diff and halfshafts are far stronger than the discovery rear axle full stop and you wouldn't need to source a longer rear propshaft to accommodate the shorter diff. Personally I prefer the R380 gearbox, but for off road use I prefer the engine sitting back in the bay which the LT77 permits, if you switch an LT77 over from ATF to MTF its a good reliable gearbox for most applications, fit a 300Tdi or Td5 clutch pedal which will give you a much lighter operation. The R380 uses a common bellhousing and first motion shaft for Discovery and Defender, which pushes the engine further forward in the 300Tdi defenders, which is why you'd have to do something about repositioning the engine mounts in your year 110 chassis. The 300Tdi timing case has a dedicated position to fit an AC compressor, even the crank & fan pulleys have a set of drive grooves for an AC belt, all you would need is a tensioning & idler pulley & arm, wherever you end up with engine position you will have a sensible place to fit the AC compressor. The beauty of a Defender is that you can make it into whatever you want, before you do anything go out and get good advice from multiple reliable & knowledgeable sources and avoid the cowboy outfits that put big lift kits and even bigger wheels & tyres on Defenders, I don't know of anyone that has been happy going down that path of modifications.

      @@leeaitken2592 No Problem 👍
      A Defender 200Tdi is a straight in swap for your Landy and is a strong & reliable engine, comparable in power and torque to a 300Tdi but a little harsher sounding to drive, only snag being that Defender 200Tdi variant engines are a bit thin on the ground these days and changing a Dicovery 200Tdi variant engine around to fit a Defender can be a pain to get right, especially the exhaust routing if you keep the Discovery turbo. Lots of options out there, one of the most successful non land rover diesel engine swaps I did was fitting an Isuzu 3.1 turbo diesel (with the manual injection pump), absolute peach of an engine that gave good performance and economy in a Defender, it did take a little bit of head scratching to get everything just right though. Good luck with your quest for more power, definitely worth it if you're running any of the naturally asthmatic or the Turbo D motors!👍

    Really great to see the old gal get this refresh...I have a 300Tdi 90 (R reg) and it IS just bullet proof...the Wolf Land Rovers were all 300Tdi even though the Army were asked that td5 was on offer...the 300Tdi can be repaired anywhere and actually by anyone with ANY knowledge. It is a very robust and forgiving engine. Once had an oil leak on a Wolf on the autobahn and engine was virtually DRY on pulling in...we put some cooking oil in (albeit above the normal level to allow for cooking...literally!) and it got us back to Barracks.

    I had my ex military 110 converted by Glencoyne engineering, the 300tdi makes a great difference, added power steering and a Disco transfer box, you'll find the original MOD transfer box will leave it a bit under geared with a 300tdi, especially if you do boost pin and spacer mod to the fuel pump. The Disco transfer box gives a good 60 cruising speed.

    Are the gear ratios same/ similar on them both? A technician from our local LR specialists (you actually featured one of their 90's on you channel!!) said the Disco had a longer geared transfer box giving better top end speed. Or something along those lines at any rate, was a while ago!!

    • @andicog
      @andicog Před rokem

      Yes, the Disco does have different hi range transfer gearing, there are 3 different ratio boxes, military N/A Defender , normal Defender and Disco, the Discovery trans box will give slightly lower revs at cruising speed, most conversions to 2 or 300tdi won't leave the military trans box in as its too low geared for the 300tdi's power and will limit top speed.
      Some military land rover also have a lower 1st and 2nd gear to make towing with the old N/A diesel easier. 👍

      @juicemotors  Před rokem

      LT77 gearbox is the same ratios as the discovery 1 R380 but a few mods to longevity, the discovery transfer box is favourable for lowering revs as it’s geared at 1.2 as opposed to a defenders 1.4. Depends what you use it for though as 1st and 2nd gear will be affected
