If you are a returning creative friend - thank you so much for your unending support; it really does mean a lot.
Today’s piece is inspired by: I wanted to try something I found on TikTok and Create a Community Inspired Piece.
Technique used: A squeegee over some paint dots
What I learnt: Sometimes the most simplest technique can create some fun results
Canvas: I use canvases from Loxley Arts: either the Gold or Ashgate brands.
Pouring Medium: I use a ready mixed pouring medium here in the UK and this was made and produced by a fellow fluid artist. You can get that from her here: madebymelovedbyu.co.uk/produc...
Hair/Blow Dryer: I currently use the Remington D3010 and always use the cool setting unless I specify otherwise. This works for me due to the slim nozzle at the end. There are also other great alternatives and each artist has a dryer they find most comfortable with using.
I have a video that shows you how I mix my paints for various techniques: • Fluid Acrylic Pouring ...

Thanks Mark, that's very kind, I'll screenshot the code, it sounds great. ☺️
Love it! I had a stroke and couldn't tell you how important your community is when you have a life changing experience. My neurologist says to listen to music and to paint. So I found you on CZcams and your calm manner is like a symphony in my head. I am in LOVE with Arteza products and their company is very friendly and customer support rocks! So I paint and watch and listen to you as you explain art. Many blessings to you and your family. Stay safe!
Lisa, thank you so much for such a thoughtful and kind comment. This one really means a lot and I’m so happy you found my channel. Thanks so much for your support and encouragement 💜😊
Wishing you continued healing & blessings from Florida.
Really like this! I'm amazed how it really does look like a community!! Well done! ❤
Thank you so much!
Hello 👋, how are you doing?
I first saw this technique done by an artist Jaleh Lozano "The Art of Jaleh" she does it so fast I could not figure out how to put the dots down. Thank you so much for slowing down the process. I am going to try it. You have inspired me so much.
Hi Lillie! Thank you so much- so happy this has helped and I hope you have as much fun as I did. 😊
What a straight forward swipe. Love how it looks like buildings or people. Very colorful.😊
Thank you 😊
Very nice ! A crowd of people

Hello 👋, how are you doing?
Love the colour choice love the blue background
Thank you 🙏
I love what this piece represents Mark! Not only the aspect of a community coming together but the theory that it’s ok, not to be ok.
As a long time sufferer of mental illness, it’s great to hear someone tell you that this is ok.
Thanks for sharing your talent and your compassion. ♥️
Thank you Natalie, really happy you like it and it’s always the rule in my opinion and to never put so much pressure on yourself. It’s ok to not be ok 👍🏻
What a great idea!!
Looks like a fun thing to do. I think I might do one representing our family. There are 32 of us now, so that should pretty much fill up a small canvas on its own!
Wow that’s amazing!! Go for it! Happy creating 🙏😊
Hello 👋, how are you doing?
I don’t think there’s any thing simple about it. I love how strong and expressive it is, thank you and God bless.

Another amazing piece. I love how you showed each step and explained the need to let the base dry before going to the next one. If you hadn’t told us, I’m one of those who would have learned the lesson by first making a mess! 😎 Please keep sharing your insights. 🙏
Thank you so much Mary! Thank you for your kind comments and encouragement 😊

Very COOL 😎!!! I LOVE ❤️ IT!!!
Thank you Joanne! And thank you for your lovely feedback 😊😊
i didn't expect this to turn out as well as it did! Like fun!
Thank you 😊
i cant wait to try this!
Yay! Have fun 🤩
Lovely and simple Mark. It does matter where the dots go doesn’t it? Whatever, I would imagine that practice will improve technique. Thank you.
Thank you. Yes you have to think what dots will run into each other. I’m thinking of doing another…
So effective, you certainly have a steady hand, I fear I would have very wobbly lines were I to try that technique. I really like this piece.
Thank you 😊
And it would still look nice!
I love it Mark!!
Thank you 😊
Hello 👋, how are you doing?
I love how you did this. It's like a dry swipe. Have you tried doing it with fluid paints and swiping them? Bet it would come out amazing.
Wow yea what a great idea, maybe I will try that. Thank you so much and Happy New Year to you 🥳
Love it!!😍😍
Thank you so much Bonnie 💜💜💜
Love it!
Yay! So happy you do, thank you 😊
I tried several other videos and they were not as informative as your video. Just did my first go and it turned out fantastic! I am using the canvas as a birthday card for a friend who is soon to celebrate her 90th birthday! For me, the "Community" represents all those who she has loved and who love her.
Thank you so much for your lovely wishes and encouragement 😊🙏
Love it !
Happy New Year 💕
Thank you Karen! Happy New Year to you x
Great! Thanks 😊
Thank you Susan 💜
Love it 😄
Thank you Sherill 💜
This is stunning Mark, the simplicity but the complexity of it as well
People/Diversity 🤩🤩🤩🤗🤗🤗
Happy Holidays ♥️💚♥️💚♥️💚♥️💚♥️
Wow thank you so much Stacey. Really appreciate you - happy new year to you 😊😊😊
Beautiful. It is a really cool concept. I would like to try this. I have some ideas how to add to it to kind of make it my own. So will be another step let it dry and then do the dry swipe like you did. Thank you so much for sharing this idea. Love it. Happy New Year. ❤😊
Oh wow I’m so happy thank you Joalla, I hope you have fun and your idea turns out well. Happy New Year 🥳
@@MarkJRatcliffeArt I am going to try to add some trees at part of the top and bushes on the sides, like they are in a park. 😊
❤️❤️❤️
OMG Mark Now I want to try this .🤣🤣Simple but beautiful thanks for sharing . As you can see I have a lot of catching up to do on watching videos 🤣🤣 Have a great day my friend 😍😍😘😘💕💕
Yes yes yes!! Try it and give it a go. So simple but so much fun!! Thank you Manon xx
Thank you I was so inspired by this video, and ran to my studio to do it ! My squeegee was a hard plastic and when i ran it over the piece it just collected the paint in an instant and it became a sludgey blur with no separation between colours. Is there a technique or a way of keeping those colours from not backing up with the pulling down?
Thanks I'd love to be able to master this!
Hi Dianne. So much fun! Glad you’re trying this. I would say that when you press down your squeegee over the paint don’t press too hard. Gently allow the squeegee to glide over the surface. Don’t press down with force. Make sure the paint isn’t fluid either. The squeegee will drag and gather up the paint but you can minimise that by allowing it to glide with less pressure. I really hope that helps 😊
Hello 👋, how are you doing?
Love this, are you able to tell me whether you pre primed the canvas? If so how/what product do you use?
Thanks Michelle, I always buy my canvases that are triple primed so are all primed when purchased and ready to be used
Sue from fl…love this--
🙏💜
Lovely 😊
Thank you 😊
Hey Mark, this is an interesting technique. Your piece of art looks good. I probably would have added some more paint in the lower part of the right side, just the way it is on the left side.
I love the meaning you gave it 💖🖒
Thank you so much Michaela, yes I agree and next time I will re-look at the balance. Thank you so much for all your encouragement and support it really does mean a lot that you’re on this journey with me - Happy New Year 🥳
@@MarkJRatcliffeArt thank you! Have a happy new year, too. It's a pleasure to watch you do your beautiful artwork
So pretty. Thanks for the clear tutorial. Why don’t you paint the edges of the canvas?
Thank you. I would do now 👍🏻
Excellent
Thank you so much 😀
Very nice
Thank you so much 😊
Hello 👋, how are you doing?
I love the concept very much!. Having just gone through the family gathering, I am considering doing this and calling it “Extended Family”. Thank you for the wonderful idea!!.🙏🏼🎄🎁
Thank you so much Consuelo I’m so happy you’re considering doing this. Please share your results with me as I’d love to see them. Happy New Year 🥳
I love this idea... I have a fairly large extended family. I might ask everyone what their favourite colour is and do their favourite coloured dot to represent each member. Thanks for your idea :)
Thanks for the tutorial, it's a beautiful piece of work. I've tried this method a few times and most of the paint ends up on the back of the squeegee and the canvas doesn't look so nice. It looks like maybe you're not using much pressure at all when you drag it down the canvas? Maybe that's what I'm doing wrong?
Thank you. Yea don’t press too hard, just allow the tool to glide 👍🏻🤩
What kind of squeegee did you used? It s a simple domestic squeegee for glasses, etc?
Just a regular one that cleans glass 👍🏻
Hermoso maestro gracias vendiciones si pones colores como de Noche una ciudad?
You can use whatever colours you wish 💜🙏😊
thank you for showing this. It looks so good. Inspiring. #sg
You’re very welcome! Thank you 😊
Love it! Like you said, you get one go at it, there’s no fixing and all that. Thanks for sharing🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thank you 😊
I've been wanting to try this technique so I'm really pleased I've found your video :)
Do you think it will be better to use a normal canvas or a board canvas, please? Do you have to press hard with the squeegeee, please?
Thank you so much x
Thank you Alexandra. Have fund doing yours. I used a canvas as I found the little bit of flex in the canvas helps the squeegee glide. Don’t press down too hard, I would say press down with some pressure but not a lot. You want your paint to be picked up by the squeegee and carries across the canvas. Practice on a piece of paper first to get the motion and friction right before doing it on your canvas 😊
Hello 👋, how are you doing?
Hi Mark. That's fantastic. Love the mix of colours.
Also I've tried clicking on the link for the pm mix. But it's saying page not found. Is it no longer available.
Many thanks in advance.
Hey Cerrys! Thank you so much for your lovely feedback. I spoke to the artist, she is still selling it but will release more in the New Year. Thanks for flagging. Happy New Year to you 🎉👏🏻
@@MarkJRatcliffeArt likewise the same to you. And look forward to seeing what your next project will be. 😁
Well, we can turn out 5 or 6 an hour of these without difficulty, but what do you do with them all after that?
Up to you… I donated this piece to a community centre - spreading the pieces you make within the community you live in maybe?
Does look like a crowd of people. I don't have any experience with this but with mine I put too much space between the two groups of people, and it looked like 2 groups of people who were opposedto each other????
Can I do it with cheap gouache? And how to predict the shapes
I don’t know, you could try, I just use acrylic paint. Shapes can be determined but what you put on a canvas. Remember the heap you put on will be stretched with the squeegee - have fun 🤩
Aciu,labai idomu...ir grazu..Saunuolis.
Thank you so much 😊
@Mark J Ratcliffe Art - It turned out gorgeous looking -WOW!! What did you use for the base thats blue some sort of medium a?? Anyways, I tired a Squeegee painting and used a medium base to lay down first and then it dried. I came back like 30 minutes later and I used my Liquitex Acrylic paints but I think i USED TO much since mine smeared all over the canvas on my 3rd swipe... Also, do you have the link to the black one you are talking about at min 6:21?
Thank you so much- I painted the base first (sky blue) and let it dry. I did always wipe mine clean before each swipe. The black one I mention (sorry there is no video) is before I filmed my creations 🙏
@@MarkJRatcliffeArt Many thanks for your speedy response!! Well I am almost completed my first Abstract painting with a Squeegee and it actually is turing out pretty amazing!! I used the Liquitex Acrylic paint which I really like as far as the quality of the paint and the consistency.. The first time I put down way to much paint and and pulled down to hard on my tool and it smeared everywhere...Life and learn..thats the fun part... My 2nd time I did my small dots and lined them up just like you have done in the video and it came out pretty amazing! 🎉🎉!! I only used Candiam Orange, Primary Blue, Hooker Green, Primary Black and Primary red and Yellow and so far so good!! I am going to let it dry and come back with a few more colors since the piece is really turning out special.. Cheers from FL..🤟🤟
@@FLSharkdiver that sounds AMAZING!!! so happy to hear you excited and inspired by this piece. Thank you so much for sharing your journey and process with me - have fun and take care. Happy creating 💙
@@MarkJRatcliffeArt Time to put my Speed boats aside and start creating some amazing pieces...:)
Hi ,
Happy new year !!! I would like to see you varnish.
Thank you Marcy, I’ll defo show how I varnish thank you for the suggestion. Happy New Year 🥳
Hi Mark
I'm creating a design on wood for a friend
It is a close grain well sanded 18-inch by 8 inch bamboo board.
Should I seal it first with Gesso?
Thanks for taking time out of your busy day to read this 😊
Hi Dave, yes defo seal it first because otherwise the paint will still make the piece bow as the moisture will get in
