  • Although both Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy (frequently referred to as simply "cognitive rehabilitation") and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) both focus on cognitive health, they are unique treatment modalities that target distinct cognitive concerns.
Cognitive rehabilitation is a set of interventions designed to treat and mitigate cognitive deficits in the areas of memory, attention, language, executive functioning, and visuospatial skills. It is built on the idea of neuroplasticity and the ability of the brain to adapt with practice and treatment. Exercises include both restorative activities and compensatory strategy training. Patients receive cognitive rehabilitation from a licensed practitioner, typically a speech-language pathologist (SLP) or occupational therapist. CBT is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on challenging unproductive core beliefs (e.g., I am defective, I am useless), identifying negative self-talk, and re-framing one's mentality with more helpful thoughts (e.g., I’m a normal person, with both strengths and weaknesses), as well as identifying potential triggers to problematic thinking. CBT can be used to treat a variety of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, eating disorders, and serious mental illness (SMI). Practitioners who can provide CBT are licensed mental health professionals and may include psychologists, licensed clinical social workers (LCSW), and licensed mental health counselors (LMHC). CBT is just one of many forms of psychotherapy. If you are interested in receiving this type of service, you can call or look up through your insurance company to find mental health providers that are in-network!
