- Legendary singer-songwriter Jessi Colter, sits down with music journalist, Rachel Winston for an intimate discussion of life, the music business, and her love Waylon Jennings. Read more here:
Jessi Colter is wise, spiritual, classy, smart, and could give any girl lessons on how to be a woman every man wants. She was the one woman who hung in there with the men during the outlaw movement and was able to stay a lady. When I came to Nashville, I surrounded myself with the same type of musicians and have always looked to her for inspiration.
Jessi and I had known each other for a few years before we sat down at the historic RCA on Music Row. This famed studio once occupied by Chet Atkins brought back memories for her. Chet played a defining role in Jessi's career, taking her first 5 songs and getting hits with them. He also impacted the career of her late husband, Waylon Jennings. A black and white photo of Waylon and Chet hangs on a nearby wall, giving physical evidence of yesteryear. Waylon was one of the original outlaws who made an imprint on country music and many people's lives. He was definite, trailblazing a path in a "creative vortex" so powerful it shaped an entire movement. He called Jessi his leaning post and she was with him every step of the way.
Before meeting Waylon, Jessi was a successful singer-songwriter with a budding career. She first met Waylon at a writing session and the rest of it unfolds like a story that was meant to be told. The daughter of a Pentecostal preacher found herself falling for a man with a righteous calling to music, but demons followed closely along the way. She explained, "What he was doing was right in pursuing the music and the passion he had for it and the songs, all that made it easier. It was like Waylon was working all the time, so yes, at first he got into diet pills and then into some other things, nothing like what they call today hard drugs. I think he just wanted to stay up." Jessi said the years just flowed, and if it had just been some guy getting high and doing drugs, she wouldn't have been there. She saw early on that this was a man who had something to offer the world with a heart bigger than his home state of Texas.
Dealing with sharing Waylon with the world became the next challenge after making the journey to the top in music during that time. "As Waylon approached such great success album after album I thought oh gosh, I've dealt with all of the hard times we had when there's no money, we really weren't getting paid and everyone was shafting us. Can I deal with this?" Fame came after time, but in those days there were years of playing clubs for no money and gaining lots of real-life writing material along the way. "It was the man and the music or the woman and the music, it's their life," she described. Times have changed and picking up a guitar and taking the fast lane to stardom has become common place. Jessi explained that she has no way to equate how it would be to handle this, noting that the sudden echoing of your name is a swim. Swimming in this unknown place has proven to be too much for so many artists experiencing this kind of rise to fame. Keeping your roots solid and having great people around you is the only way Jessi sees a successful ending with this scenario.
Her smile lights up every room and her angelically startling voice is a cornerstone in country music history. Songs like "Im Not Lisa" and "Storms Never Last" could only be written by a woman and have the depth and emotion to stop you in your tracks. If you are looking to go into music, or are in love with an outlaw, this interview is your guide to handle both with grace. - Hudba
She loved him enough to stay and give him all the help he needed, but he loved Jessi just as much.
How many women say their husband was a genius? Not many. Jessi colter, your an amazing woman and waylon was a lucky man to have a genuine Lady like you.
Tja, so etwas nennt man wahre Liebe ❤️❤️❤️ die Beiden waren so ein tolles Paar ❤️❤️❤️ es ist traurig, dass sie nicht zusammen alt werden durften 😢😢😢

Yes we do
I've seen it mentioned that they've talked about it several times but it just never materialized for whatever reason. It is definitely a project worth doing.

Waylon’s sound is insanity... it’s mind blowing, second to none .... legendary sound , as good as it gets ... the sound of Texas , Texas is home made for many of the best musicians ever to exist , Lightning Hopkins, Albert King , Johnny Winter, Billy Gibbons, Janis Joplin , Dimebag Darrel , Willie Nelson, Stevie Ray Vanghn ... just a few names... not forget to mention Waylon Jennings and Jess they both were gorgeous looking people with gifted talent .... two amazing beings putting together, man she is gorgeous looking lady and Waylon was a handsome and tall son-of-a-gun that played mean country chicken picking licks
ZZ & Waylon,in my opinion are the greatest two musical acts to ever come out of the Lone Star State ... can't leave out th" greatest guitar player...Stevie Ray.
"Miss Jesse," I fell in love with your singing at your first note of "I'm not Lisa." How I love that one and all your following productions. You are so great! As a Vietnam vet and an avid lover of your and Wayon's music, I sing a lot of Wayon's music today. I know that you and Waylon were so very much in love and it's obvious that you were his greatest inspiration. I sure appreciate you and enjoy the gift our Lord has given to you in music. God bless you, lady!
I can see why Waylon fell in love with Jesse. Her personality and smarts bring out her inner beauty.
Boy, you have that so right!
Jessi and Waylon--two beautiful people who made such beautiful music together.

Waylon will always be the greatest country and western music singer ever!! I was born in 1974. My parents had a 1962 Chevy Impala. My Dad installed an eight track tape player in it. All we use to listen to was Waylon! I always thought he was the greatest!! His music always told a story I could relate to!! Even as kid! Waylon will always be my favorite!! RIP!!
She is still a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice. God Bless you Jessi!
I didn't really discover Waylon's music until after his death. I wish I had seen him live. Jessi is a remarkable lady and musician. Big fan of Shooter too.
Waylon has got what No other person has, The voice that can draw a crowd like any other. The saying "you don't know how good you have it until it's gone" Waylon knew how good he had it and never left.. R.I.P friend R.I.P
Two great artists. They were just made for each other. I miss Waylon. Have always loved Jessi's singing. A true love story, for sure.
Jessi and Waylon: They were the perfect male/female duet that ever set foot on this earth. In a single word, perfect and you will never improve on perfection.

I was listening to 'oldies' when i went trucking in the mid 70s (back when it was FUN). Heard Waylon and his Outlaw Sound and stuck with it. Jessi is a wonderful powerful religious woman who is a great writer, singer and mother. I love her then and still.

God bless ya jessie.waylon has kept me alive more than once in my life.
My dad listened to country while I grew up in the 60s and 70s. Of course I didn’t like it then but then... I began listening and enjoying. I shared “Wrong” with a buddy and then another 😂. It’s a pleasure seeing someone talk about the ones they love... Jessi went to another place when talking about Waylon. Searching for truth is an awesome message.
She's definitely a very spiritual, beautiful, great lady who has had an adventurous life, especially with Waylon.
Jessi is a classic singer. Love her singing... especially "I m not Lisa" which I had her CD many many moons ago.
Great job Rachel! You can tell how much Jessi loved Waylon. She seemed so comfortable and relaxed with you.

Fantastic video. Wonderful insight on both Jessi and Waylon. A very nice love story.
I'll Always Love This Woman...
I worked in the entertainment business all of my life. I was also an engineer on a very success full long running live country music radio show that was broadcast every Saturday night for many years. Second only to the opry. I worked with Waylon's bunch many times. It was always a good day and always good music. I loved country music. I understand what they did to it but don't like it. It's hard to find real country music anymore on the big stage anymore. I miss the real stuff.
Monmixer, what was the show? Can I hear the audio recordings? Are they available on CZcams? Surely if you were second only to the Opry there must be Audio?
Monmixer, are the audio recordings available on CZcams or do you have copies? If you were second only to the Opry you must have recordings.
Monmixer please share your experience.
@@jeffbrewer6365 I personally do not have recordings but yes those are saved. We taped every show. Then we slowed to 1 show every Saturday night instead of two and second show was the tape rolling from the first show. There are only a very few artists that would not allow broadcast or recording as it was in the contracts.
@@jeffbrewer6365 Some are on you tube though. From Jamboree In The Hills. We started an outdoor 2 day country festival that grew to almost a full week. Live Nation ended up owning it as Live Nation was spun off from Clear Channel Broadcasting. They bought the radio stations and the country show at that time was owned by WWVA radio that also owned the theatre. Out theatre the Capitol in Wheeling was one of Live Nations early experiments into live entertainment. It was all under Clear Channel Communications at that time. Eventually they bought and built properties that were suited for live entertainment and Live Nation was born. The Evil Empire. the ran the building into the ground. It was shut down. by the Fire Dept for code violations. The kept the radio stations in the front of the building. The actual theatre is where the violations were. IHEART as they are called now I believe still rents the space for the radio stations. They did the last Jamboree In The Hills in 2018. All of those acts were also broadcast but not recorded. Some of the bigger acts even denied broadcast. They were broadcast on FM though. The other Radio show Jamboree USA were broadcast from the theatre by WWVA 1170 AM.
RIP Waylon always a fan
Waylon made a HUGE impact on my husband & his DADDY!
Actually breaks my ♥ some nights...
I laughed at "....I think he just wanted to stay up!" 2:37 hahaha
And speed will definitely take care of that
Always glad to see new video clips to learn more about Jessi's path as a person, singer/songwriter, and in "Waylon's Vortex."
I really enjoyed this interview I'm a Jesse and Waylon fan and I never had heard some of this stuff.. The interviewer in my opinion is quite professional and personable.
Quite a love story. Love their music!!

Great interview!!!! I grew up listening to Waylon and Jessi. Sure miss Waylon and love you Jessi !!! There will never be another creative time in music like the 60's, 70's and early 80's. Stars weren't manufactured back then, they were born! Thanks for the interview. - Ricky :-)

Looks pop
many thanlk for posting, beautiful.
one of my very favorite singers.
Talk about a true love story, there’s no way Jessie and Waylon stayed together for so many years without being madly in love. Their one of country music’s great love stories…
God Bless you Beautiful lady ❤️🙏to you always I grew up listening to you two 🙏❤️🦋😘😇😇🫂❣️💞
She let her man, play the man, and that takes real faith, and the Lord blessed her. Many Christian women, try to [play the man if he is slippling so he feels he is UNDER THE LAW, but as Jessi implied, the secret is to love him MORE if he is struggling.
Great interview!
Great interview. 👍
Such a wonderful
Woman!!
Jessi is a classy woman
JW's BulletsNBlad
JW's BulletsNBlades The classiest woman in music! Their son Shooter is a great talent too, looks just like his old man
Still beautiful!
I love Jessi.
i seen jessie the other night and she rock !Jam the keyboard
Amazing Lady God bless her
There is a lot of people that can walk in his tracks .But no one will ever be good enough to feel his shoes
She was so natural looking for a female country singer at that time ..no big gaudy hair...it seemed they really loved each other...or at least he seemed to love her.. she talks about him in a very unemotional detached way which seems odd to me considering they were supposedly the love of each others life.
Such a beautiful lady.
How many of us singers in country and blues were raised in a Pentecostal family........all we had to do was get rid of the drugs and booze.....the music is the magic
We live in a resonant universe. Good resonates good and bad means more practice!
A great Lady and Amazing Artits, I would Love to meet you again .
God love Waylon Jennings and Jessi ❤❤ God Bless Jessi
Thank you.
Thankyou
Jessi Colter interview at RCA studios in Nashville
Perfect
Still as adorable as she’s always been
Amazing interview
#Hoss
Beautiful Jessi 😘😘
Not that I don`t like Jessie`s singing , she is definitely one of the best singers ever and I got all her CD`s and records of hers. But Waylon deserved a live funeral memorial of live singers and also her singing to him also, like her beautiful song and voice on `you hung the moon didn`t you Waylon`. Also she should talk about his other children more besides Shooter, if she did raise them with Waylon or mostly alone with him gone so much. Love you Jessie.
Marilyn Brown you
Waylon and Jessi that's the girl old hoss wants
