Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a Scottish doctor and author, celebrated for his world-famous creation Sherlock Holmes, the consulting detective who set the standard for crime fiction into the 20th century and beyond. In addition to his Holmes stories, Conan Doyle is also remembered for his fantasy and science fiction novels and stories, including 'The Lost World', his historical fiction, and for numerous short stories contributed to magazines over a 40 year period.
'The Story of the Brown Hand' first appeared in the May 1899 issue of The Strand Magazine, as the last instalment of the 'Round the Fire' series*, twelve unconnected stories of mystery and suspense written by Conan Doyle during the period after he had killed off his most famous creation, Sherlock Holmes. The tale has since achieved a status as a classic ghost story, and is frequently anthologised.
*All twelve of the original 'Round the Fire' stories, narrated by Simon Stanhope, are now available on Audible and iTunes.

The poor ghost! And the poor old doctor! So nice that this time, everyone came out happy.
Such beautiful enunciation! One can hear every syllable. Makes such a change from the mumbling performances of some TV and movie actors.
Thanks GradKat, appreciate your kind comments
Perfect for all these stories, afraid I can’t listen to them narrated by anyone from America, though they have many brilliant stories done very well.✊♥️
@@julielevinge266totally agree
❤❤
You're a master of narration that you can read the back of a some washing product and you would mesmerise me and my senses!!!! You truly are a master narrator !!
Extremely kind of you to say so! Thank you!
@@BitesizedAudio oh it's nothing you deserve it!!!!! You're a magician with the words !!!!
What a fabulous story, I guessed that it was the wrong hand, but that made it no less exciting to hear when the conclusion of the story arrived. Beautifully narrated with just the right amount of tension.
Arthur Conan Doyle was a great writer. Well narrated, too.
Thank you. Yes, he was indeed, I concur
We are so grateful for the new upload. Where there is no imagination there is no horror according to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Your narrating gives us the opportunity imagine this story to its full potential. Thank you for your time, passion and skills. Stay safe Sir.
Thanks Roshani Dobson, you too
My fascination is boundless.
At the 6:20 - 8:50 segment, Sir Arthur's masterful description and in-depth translation of physiognomy is uncanny and singularly posh, in my opinion. Alongside Dickens, I consider ACD peerless in this respect.
I may be wrong but I find it irresistible to praise such knack.
These short stories are very revealing about the authors. What an interesting person Conan Doyle must have been. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Thank you.
Yes indeed, a fascinating man and such a wonderful imagination. I always find his works very easy to read aloud (some other authors, less so!), his writing flows so well.
This has to be one of Conan Doyle’s best non Sherlockian tales.
Perfectly narrated by yourself of course.✊♥️
The uncle is such a dramatic character 😂 even for a Victorian ghost story.
Sir Arthur's powers of description defy the conventional and his technical sentience flows elegantly into what I call his eloquent audacity... which is hardly the norm for many writers of crime fiction or mystery (with few notable exceptions).
I have long deified Sherlock Holmes to a demi-god and considered A. C. D. as member of "royalty" in literature and yet, were it not for the net, I would never have discovered his supernatural mysteries which are now seemingly out of print (esp. here in the Philippines). How I wish British society never frowned upon ACD's career shift and involvement with the Society for Psychical Research... I admire him more for such openness despite being a physician and man of science. Perhaps, this is why he wrote "The Brown Hand".
Hats off to Sir Arthur... and a reverential Salaam to Mr. Simon Stanhope for his giftedness.
Cheers 😉🍸
Love... Thank you!
I have lost count of how many times I have listened to your wonderful recording of this story Simon. I never get bored of it. Gives me a feel good vibe, very uplifting. Sooooo happy that CZcams Land has sorted out it's priorities. You do a truly fantastic job. Thank You So Much. 😊
Hello. We are going to listen this one today.
Enjoy your weekend.
Well told! One just has to wonder if a completely handless Lasker is haunting the other doctors now!
So beautifully written and narrated. Such an entertainment, such a pleasure.
Another brilliant one Simom. Thanks. Such an intriguing story.
My favorite so far...thank you.
A fascinating tale and classic, perfect narration. Though really, it is more than reading and narration; it is actual acting and performance!
What a wonderful story. So marvellous to have a satisfactory ending for once, peculiar though it might be. Many thanks Simon.
Loved this story!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for listening
Interesting tale...had to re~listen😲👍👍👍👍👍
Another perfectly narrated thrilling story! Thank you!
Used to ride on barrow downs in Berkshire when was a child, only realised what the barrows were filled with when I began listening to this genre’, love this story superbly narrated as always✊♥️
WHAT A TERRIFIC STORY, ,AND WELL-READ. THANK YOU.
Thanks for listening
Wonderful! Thanks for this! :)
Such a brilliant story. I agree with your other listeners, in that your superb reading and the rich timbre of your voice and fabulous pronunciation/accent that you use only serves to enhance Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's wonderfully eldritch tale. Thank you so much. ;-)
Thank you for your kind comments Lisa
Very good, thank you for sharing.
Superbly read, Simon! You’re a treasure!
Very kind of you to say so, thank you!
Another brilliant reading of a brilliant story! Thank you very much.
This is such a delightful story. I know James though ghosts should be malevolent but I love the stories where the ghost just needs a helping hand (in this case literally) to rest in peace. Another I like is Bone to His Bone by E. G. Swain, which I read aloud to the cats each Christmas Eve. I think you would be just right to do a reading of it.
Thank you for the suggestion Angela. I've had E. G. Swain on my list for a while but wasn't sure which particular story to go with first... I need to refresh my memory of that one, but I'll do my best to get round to it before too long!
@@BitesizedAudio It's fairly short. Also it happens at Christmas time so that gives you a while. I'm already hearing it in your voice.
Thank you for another excellent ghost story...
You're most welcome, thanks Bourne Dandy!
Beautifully read! Thank you for this wonderful story.
Thanks David! Also, I think this is my first opportunity to say thank you for joining as a channel member, I really appreciate your support.
loved this thank you - I hope the other man did not have the same belief
I thought the same!!
Thank you for this!
You're welcome!
What a variety of delightful and fascinating stories Arthur Conan Doyle wrote - and a fine start, with this, to the selection of unfamiliar ones you have narrated, here, with characteristic skill and charm. Nice absent-minded scientist detail (for a teaser rather than a spoiler)! But I wonder just how things 'worked' "aboard ship"? - perhaps my imagination of state-room splendor on long voyages is just too limited...
Fantastic narration. Thank you so much! Enjoyed the story immensely.
Glad to know that, thank you for your kind feedback!
Thank you. 👌💕
Great story - easy to listen to and calms the frustrations of trying to reassemble a garden table.
Mind you it is not always just the story, but the crafted use of the English language by the writer and the gift box wrapped delivery by the narrator.
Thank you
Glad to know you enjoyed it - I hope the table came together in the end!
@@BitesizedAudio Thank you, yes, and added a parasol 😁 (stories and calming voice helped)
Please continue with your readings of these amazing works of art. Job well done Sir!
Addicted to these ! Need more :) I tend to binge watch ❤
I just start at the beginning & go through them again ( & again & again)😁
Wonderful as always. Really enjoyed it.
Thanks Jamie
Of course in private life, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was much interested in psychic research. We know him as the creator of the world's most famous consulting detective - Sherlock Holmes....but his stories about the 'eerie' are equally engaging. I have never had the pleasure of hearing this one, and enjoyed it very much.
Wonderful
Very good story and narration 😊
Thank you! 🙂
Thank you 😄
Bloody awesome, I'm off to sleep by story's end! Thanks: Zzzzzzz
Sleep well!
@@BitesizedAudio I've been listening to your channel for a while now and it's bloody awesome thanks for the Bite-Sized uploads my friend cheers from Australia.
You and Greg together compliment the Doyle story book👍
Very kind of you to say so, thank you Ian!
@@BitesizedAudio l note there are two Sir AC stories also available on BBC Sounds...
How it happened & One Crowded Hour
I am fascinated by tales of Europeans that comingled cultures and the occult with Indian and Arabic peoples.
LoL.....The mistake of Igor....in selecting the 'WRONG BRAIN' for Frankenstein's experiment----the 'wrong hand', LoL.....LoL....
Had I been able to speak like you ..!!
Alternate narrative plot: after the failure of the wrong hand to satisfy the ghost, the narrator implores the uncle to let him amputate his hand to satisfy the ghost. It works.
Now what about Alaska? Will he be looking for his hands?
👍👍👍
British pragmatism as its best!
Indeed it is!
maybe he needs to wipe carefully!!
Not a very clever doctor. Would have thought it was the first thing he had made sure of. Haha!!
I wonder if Mulder has a X-File on this one? 📁 Very good strange story. 👻👻👻
Please , sort out the editing, The glitch s. Spoil the story as , cant get the full story.
@Tanith Day There are no glitches that I'm aware of in this story, the original edit was done very carefully. Maybe something went wrong during the uploading - but no-one else has pointed it out. Can you give a time stamp to indicate where the problem(s) occur so I can take a look. Or could it be a temporary problem at your end e.g. with internet connection? I hope you're able to re-listen successfully.
@@BitesizedAudio [This feedback has been removed by the sender.]
@G Vivo Thank you for alerting me. However it's a bit of a mystery... I've re-listened myself and have also asked a friend to do so separately, and we cannot hear any glitches or missing sections. It would seem it may be a problem at the "receiver" end, perhaps a browser or app fault, or something to do with the local internet connection at the time. The only way I can think to test this theory, if you should wish to listen again, please can you note the times/sections affected and let me know.... Then if you listen again and see if the glitch happens at the same point. If it doesn't, or if it happens in different places on re-listening, that may help to diagnose what the cause is. Appreciate your comments as ever
@@BitesizedAudioSadly, I am a total idiot when it comes to these technicalities as I belong to the old world. I consulted my much younger acquaintances to resolve the dilemma. Bingo!! It is established that the real culprit is very POOR internet connectivity. The Philippines ranks high among the Top 10 Countries with SLOW INTERNET. I acquired a downloaded MP3 format via a colleagues desktop PC... It was IMMACULATE beyond all telling. Problem solved! I 🌟☺
Very relieved to know that G Vivo, thank you - glad you can listen without interruption now
Excellent reading of an ultimately silly story. One cavil re the otherwise superb enunciation - drawing room - not draw-r-ing.
Very nice - but 'demurred' is not 'demured' :-)
Quite right, certainly nowadays there's a much clearer distinction in sound - I was doing a "liquid u" for that character's heightened RP and perhaps let it run too far in this case... A little late to change it now unfortunately!
