I just spent 2 months in the wilderness in a treatment program. It was hardcore camping; no electronics, no tents, weren't aloud to know the time, no light after dark except for the moon, etc. It was the single hardest experience I've ever gone through. I'd just like to share that the first thing I did when I got my phone back for my flight home is listen to my Beatles music. And I have never got a feeling like that when I listened to music, ever. We are so blessed to have music and people with such passion like them. The Beatles are literally my heroes, for without them I wouldn't realize the impact music has on me.

So , apparently when the Beatles moved to America , the civil rights were going on and a slang term for woman is bird so technically , this song is about a black woman . John Lennon himself said that that was the inspiration for this song . Totally changed this song for me .

This song is about being black in America during the Civil Rights movement, however if I remember correctly they said it wasn't quite that literal, not necessarily about a black chick (as we would say it in America). Just about a black person. Because women don't have wings.

Well, I've looked it up on Wikipedia (smh i know) and it cites an interview in which Paul McCartney (not John Lennon) said it was about a black woman specifically (even though the idea he was putting across of fighting for civil rights applied to black men as well). I can't remember exactly where it was that I read it wasn't specifically about a black "bird". Who knows? Good song.

You know, Lynzee, that's not really fair, singers/songwriters of this quality are as rare as honest politicians. That said, there are lots wonderful, hooky, thoughtful, singable songs coming out all the time. Nothing wrong with Coldplay's Viva La Vida, Vanessa Carlton's A Thousand Miles is lively and lovely, Gaga's Alejandro is fine. Are they Lennon/McCartney or Harrison? Of course not, but there are good songs every year.

I had been doing poetry readings. I had been doing some in the last year or so because I've got a poetry book out called Blackbird Singing, and when I would read "Blackbird", I would always try and think of some explanation to tell the people, 'cause there's not a lot you can do except just read the poem, you know, you read 10 poems that takes about 10 minutes, almost. It's like, you've got to, just, do a bit more than that. So, I was doing explanations, and I actually just remembered why I'd written "Blackbird", you know, that I'd been, I was in Scotland playing on my guitar, and I remembered this whole idea of "you were only waiting for this moment to arise" was about, you know, the black people's struggle in the southern states, and I was using the symbolism of a blackbird. It's not really about a blackbird whose wings are broken, you know, it's a bit more symbolic.
    - Paul McCartney, Interview with KCRW's Chris Douridas, May 25, 2002 episode of New Ground (17:50-19:00)

True difference between literally and figuratively or metaphorically. The word literally is so overused today and often erroneously used. Poetry equals songs without audible music.

So...let me just say a few things.
I didn't really know her. I saw her in the halls at school, said hi. We had both complimented on eachother's clothes or hair or something. We weren't friends, but I honestly really liked her. When I first heard about what happened to her, I couldn't think of her face, I tried to think it up so that I could...remember...and then they had her picture at the vigil..and I recognized her face...and everyone else was in tears because they could remember her...and so could I. I just didn't know. I felt really bad because I didn't know her name until it was too late. I didn't even notice she wasn't in the halls lately. Not until I thought about it that night and realized that yes, it was who I thought it was because she wasn't there anymore. Do I feel like a bad person?...No. Not really. It's just that I realize now that we have to go ahead and make friends with those people that you always say, "Hey, maybe they'd be a good friend." Because you never know when it's going to be too late. I didn't know her all that well, but her death has taught me to get out of my comfort zone and just...do it before it's too late. Because truly, you really never know.
It's crazy, right? Me crying over the death of someone I never knew. And at the vigil, I'm sure everyone felt it, but she was there. I could, but it was just a faint feeling...a brush. More of like when someone walks in the room and you see them come in. She was there with her friends who were shedding more tears than I ever could for a stranger. And I saw the impact she has on so many people. And then I realized...yeah. She was a good friend. And maybe, I'll see her one of these days in Heaven, and we'll actually be able to be friends this time.
R.I.P. Brianna Cox. I'm sorry I never took the time to know you.

lurpinator Google the story of Paul killed in a car accident in 1966 and replaced by a look alike. John Lennon gave him the name Faul ( fake Paul). Look at all the evidence and you decide.

***** I understand what you're saying friend. It seems very ridiculous. It's funny but I missed the story back in 1966 when it was first talked about. I was a teenage Beatle fan back then. (I'm an oldie. lol) It caught my interest on utube. It doesn't matter now. On to the next thing.......... :))

My school's varsity choir sang this song at their Spring Concert (which I attended because my best friend is in the junior varsity choir) and when I heard this song I was instantly moved. They only said the title of the song, "Blackbird," and not the people who sang it, but I made a note of the title in my phone to listen to the song later. Now, MONTHS after I made that note, I'm looking through my phone and I remember "Blackbird," so I searched it up and I listened to it at 2 in the morning.
