This is the single wisest reaction to this film I've ever seen.
Totally, very thoughtful 👍🏼
NOT FIRST TIME HE SAW IT
“his hand AND his dick gon be raw” - Gandhi
"Get busy living... or get busy dying."
One of the best lines ever written.
Your god damn right
My personal words to live by.
Ultimate truth.
"Geology is the study of pressure and time. That's all it takes, really. Pressure and time."
@Helix Nebula True dat! But I think metaphorically, the slow pacing of the film also emphasizes the pressure and time of imprisonment.
"He may believe in the Bible, but he doesn't think it applies to them. He's a scumbag." One of the best insights I've heard on Shawshank.
Those last two lines bring me to tears every time
"I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams....
... I hope"
The two most powerful words, words that Red never dared to let himself think about for most of his life. "Dream" and "Hope"
I really never picked that up till now and Ive seen this movie like a hundred times. Wow.
That's where the book ended, so it had to be a powerful moment. I'd have been fine with the movie ending there, too. But you know once he gets that far, he's going to find Andy, so they might as well reward the viewer by showing it. Maybe it would have been better as a post credits scene
@@ashscott6068 They we’re going to end it like the book, but the studio demanded the Andy and Red reunion. It’s the rare example of the studio knowing better than the director/writer.
@@ashscott6068 It would have been ideal as a post-credit scene today, but back then they didn't do that as much. It does make perfect sense though.
Either way, I guarantee there wasn't a dry eye in the theater.
It is unfortunate that this movie did not win Best Picture for 1994, because it just happened to come out the same year as Forrest Gump.
@@prettyteeth Ditto
The 3 words that will make even the toughest man cry: "Brooks was here".
Great reaction. The thing many people seem to miss about this movie on first viewing is who the story is actually about. The one who is redeemed in the "Shawshank Redemption" is Red, not Andy. Andy was innocent all along. It's Red who was guilty and had to come to terms with what he had done before he could have hope for a new future.
Amazing, so true 👍🏼
EXACTLY. 👏👏👏❤️
This is a classic. I think it’s such a beautiful movie.
I think this is the best Shawshank reaction I've ever seen.
Totally, not just a reaction but break down in ways I've never thought about before. When I watch the movie I feel all these emotions, but then he just put it all into words, epic 👍🏼
When the movie first came out back in 1994 it was overlooked by movies that came out that same year like The Lion King and Forrest Gump, it wasn't until the movie came out on video tape months later and and DVD years later that it gained a huge audience and a huge positive response, personally it's the greatest film drama of the 20th Century.
Unfortunately that's the way things work in Hollywood. Amazing works of art get overlooked simply for being released in the wrong year, when everyone's attention is on something else.
@@Justin.Franks it’s true. There can only be one Best Picture each year and Gump and Pulp Fiction were everyone’s favorite horses in 1994.
this has been my absolute favorite movie for 20+ years. i have no idea how many times i've seen it. and every single youtube reaction to it i see, i watch, because i will never forget the first time i saw it and being able to share other people's first time experiences is so wonderful to me. freeman and robbins and the director and tons of critics over the years have been like "we cannot figure out why people love this movie so much, we just don't get it," and i can't pinpoint it either, but it is 100% a gem, a treasure, a MUST-SEE. thank you for posting this, and for giving us such a lovely analysis after watching the movie! thank you, really.
I randomly came across a reaction to this yesterday and this is probably my fourth one in a row and well, now I know what I'll be doing all weekend off and on.
I stumbled upon this movie when I was about 13 just chilling in my basement with nothing else to do. It's my favorite movie. Not gonna lie I still tear up when I watch Brooks final days and when Red talks about missing his friend and travels to met him. Masterpiece.
"I take glee in his demise" Superb line.
After I saw it in the early 90’s, I immediately said, “That’s the best movie I ever saw!” Not many films have come close to this level!
Please watch, “The Green Mile” next!
Thanks for the suggestion. Seen that one already.
@Hawk170122 I first watched this movie in 2016. I immediately watched it again.. greatest movie ever made imo.
I did the same thing. Only to do it one other time later. Interstellar!
"I take glee at his demise!" the movie has some good quotes, but you sure bring some yourself :D
"It was just this tug of war where the hope was in the middle... every once in a while it would be taken from you, and every once in awhile you'd receive it back..."
I originally saw this film in theaters. In all the time since, THIS is the single best description of it I've ever heard.
I remember back when Morgan Freeman not only didn't have gray hair, but he was a young co-star on a PBS children's show called "The Electric Company", which also featured Bill Cosby and Rita Moreno. It was sort of an educational sketch comedy show for kids who had outgrown "Sesame Street."
Big shout out to Frank Darabont for his simple and humble directing, letting the story speak for itself.
This is the movie that made Morgan Freeman a well-known voice artist and launched his acting career to the level is now is.
I've seen this film dozens of times but never realized how Dufrene was subtly passing on his belief in hope to the other inmates until you pointed it out. Nice.
This was the best reaction to this movie I have seen yet. “I hope”. So many reactors miss that line, and it is the perfect end to the film.
I love this movie but it wasn't until I saw this reaction that I finally caught that. Such a beautiful/tragic/"hopeful" movie!!
"Get busy living or get busy dying."
It's nice to see an adult with actual life experience react to a movie like this. So many of the reactors are basically still children, so while they may be enthusiastic, they just don't have as much to offer.
I've never put my perspective into words. But the way you just explained it is so true.
Fun fact the guy who plays hadly is also the guy who plays Mr Krabs from Spongebob.
What? That's dope
Hadly (the actor) grew up just a short distance from the old prison where this was filmed.
I like how you focused on Red, as he's really who this story is actually about. He is the narrator, his name is in the word REDemption, and he is the one we the audience can identify with. Andy is too great for most of us to hope to be in such impossible circumstances, but Red grows, pays his price, and with Andy's help is redeemed. Nice analysis, especially on the first watch!
Fun fact: This is Stephen King’s favorite adaptation of his books.
Awesome! I think this is one of his few "short" stories. And Morgan Freeman's character, Red...in the book was an Irishman. However...Morgan Freeman stole the show!
The only part he doesn’t like is the opera part, but he acknowledges that everyone else really likes it. He just says it doesn’t work for him. He says, “Other than that, the movie just shines.” He really liked what they did with Brooks who was just mentioned in passing in the story and that Tommy gets killed in the movie but is just moved to another prison in the story. It’s a great adaptation. Changes things for the medium used, such as having only one warden throughout to be the main antagonist, without losing the theme or changing the characters.
"Hope is a good thing. Maybe the best thing."
This is my fave Stephen King short story!
I don't know if someone has already mentioned it, but the book ends differently.
The book ends with Red on the bus, on the way to Mexico, saying "I hope I make it over the border. I hope to see my friend again. I hope..."
I love that ending because it ends with Red full of hope.
And it leaves the reader also full of hope.
Hoping so hard that Andy and Red are reunited!
But I love seeing them together at the end of the film too.
Just like the book a lil more.
Hollywood gonna Hollywood.
Loved your reaction!
New sub :)
The ending always gets me teary eyed.
When I saw this in the theater when it came out I told everybody I knew, what a great movie this was.
This movie is number one at IMDB - Top 250 movies!
Written by Stephen King. A beautiful movie, a beautiful reaction. New sub.
Most of the credit for writing goes to Frank Darabont who wrote the screenplay and directed the movie. Read the novella by Stephen King and you'll see that it's a shell of the story that Darabont built up into a beautiful movie.
Beautiful film AND King wrote yet another blinder
@@Finians_Mancave There aren't many changes, but they're all good changes. My favourite is keeping the same warden for the entirety of Andy's incarceration
King's non-horror films and writings are really not given enough credit. You have to check some of them out. It'll give you a new appreciation for the guy's immense talents.
I honestly believe King is a modern Shakespeare.
Also, the de-lousing powder burned the eyes and sometimes the skin. It was to make sure prisoners didn't bring in fleas, ticks, and all that because they could have severe infestations.
Plus, buildings back in That day were built to last, for function and effectiveness; not necessarily for comfort and all that. Prison was No joke. You were there to be punished, Hard. Rehabilitation came from not wanting to Ever go back. Criminals before then used to die by cop or suicide rather than go back to prison.
People now sing songs about how they don't care about doing time in prison. I guess the crunchy peanut butter, internet, and cable makes it easier, especially with the Covid payments prisoners were getting while taxpayers and small businesses got the run-around.
Nice review. Thank you for sharing.
@@LA_HA Who doesn't love Stand by Me?
Loved your reaction--thank you so much! I was looking over some of your other reactions and saw you're a vet (thank you for your service!). I'd love it if you'd react to Hacksaw Ridge if you haven't already seen it. Much love!
Damn. Glad this popped up on my feed. Can’t wait to watch your channel grow! You deserve more subs.
The One movie that fundamentally changed me for the better. So Powerful and Beautiful. No movie has ever come close.
Outstanding reaction. Your discussion/analysis was thoughtful and appreciated.
That was absolutely the best part of it.
Excellent & well spoken reaction. This movie by Steven King,is very different from his normal" horror genre" thing/another in this vein is The Green Mile. Both by King& they are set in prison. I think you would like it too.
WELL DONE!!! This was probably the most thoughtful and deep reaction/reviews of this movie I have seen on CZcams. Thank you for that.
This is one of my favorite movies! Awesome reaction ❤️
Listening to your comments about hope here, you might want to know that this story is a novella, one story out of 4, the book it's contained in is called Different Seasons by Stephen King, each story named for a season, this one had the tagline "Hope Springs Eternal"
I didn't know that. But I know the story The Body, which was adapted into Stand By Me was one of the stories in that book. And if I'm not mistaken, The Running Man was also in that book.
@@donaldwestfall1091 The Running Man was originally published under the Richard Bachman pseudonym. Apt Pupil and The Breathing Method are the other 2 stories in Different Seasons.
Stephen King is a brilliant writer. This is his best film by far.
Great reaction and commentary at the end. Such a tragic and hopeful movie, thanks for the video. 🧡
Lol literally finished watching it for the first time an hour ago too.
The Shawshank Redemption is in my top 3 favorite films of all time. I've lost count of how many times I have watched it. I only know that I never, ever grow tired of it. I really appreciate that you recognize why this movie is considered a classic. Shawshank holds the highest rating of any movie ever on IMDb and has done so for over 20 years. It's ranked higher than films like The Godfather, Schindler's List, and The Lord of the Rings. That's one hell of a bragging right.
The best movie ever 😭😀🤯 When you go back and watch it again, it takes on a new meaning e.g. Red says "shitty pipe dreams" and then much later, Andy escapes by ..... crawling through a shit pipe .....
I remember an ESPN commentator (Dan Patrick? Stuart Scott? Kieth Olbermann?) calling an assist from Brian Shaw to Shaquille O'neal as the ShawShaq Redemption around the time this movie came out.
i’ve seen a few reactions to this movie one of my personal fav. and in my opinion form what i get from Reds parole hearing is. that he purposely tried to tank them so that he wouldn’t be let out.just like brooks he felt like an important man in prison and didn’t think he could make it on the out side. that’s how i see it at least
GOAT movie. Great reaction man. Love when people discover this flick. Also Life is criminally underrated. If you want any request you should check out Out Of Sight, such a slick movie and haven't seen anyone react to it on here.
For institutional buildings there is a consistent style during a certain period. Hell for all architecture you will find these styles. I took architectural history and there are some cues in styles you will find, little obscure things that go unnoticed. Up in New England you will find the crooked window 🪟 in a house. In a place where you have a angled roof that buys up against a vertical wall they will take a small 🪟 and put it into that vertical wall tilted so that it’s side edge matches the pitch of that connecting roof. The window can be opened and provide access to the roof section, or simply opened in summer so that heat can escape and thus allow cool ground level air to flow in. Go out into the countryside and you will often see a door with a window above the front covered porch. That’s so that large furniture like mattress can go up into the second floor since often the stairs in those home are narrow, steep and put in odd corners
This movie is a friggin' masterpiece. Great review / analysis. The movie leaves a lasting impression and it tackles so many deep topics. (institutionalization, corruption, the struggle to maintain hope...etc) The friendship between Andy and Red is the the heart of the movie though. CLASSIC
The title was misleading. This movie was about friendship, loyalty, and hope above all. Just happened to take place in a prison. When all was said and done, it was Red who found redemption, as Andy was actually innocent. Very powerful movie.
Liked and subscribed. I watch a lot of YT 'reaction/first-time watch' vids. Your analysis is among the very best! Keep that great content coming!
Great analysis of movie, but you may have missed the best quote/line “get busy living or get busy dying”
This right here is one of the most brilliant reactions I have ever seen. You absorbed the whole movie. Well said my friend!
Best reaction review I've seen of this. You got every beat, love it.
That "I hope" sequence at the end is powerful. Great reaction BTW.
Enjoyed the whole thing. First time viewing. Showed the entire story of the movie in clips then a great analysis. Subbed for more
my first visit to your channel. i really like the introspection you provided. this has been one of my favorite movies for years......and it's so unusual for an American movie to show this kind of emotional depth. i appreciate that you appreciated it. thanks for posting.
you notice at Red's second parole hearing Andy gets him that harmonica, to give him something to hope for. then later when Red's making his way to the dead drop that Andy left for him, the music starts being punctuated by stings of harmonica
Now this is front to back great content. Thanks a ton!
Loving these movie reactions 🔥🤌🏽, keep pumping out the videos bruh💯
I have a huge list of movies that have their importance and position on my list and there are more than a thousand of them, but out of the top 100, this one is definitely in the TOP five. It makes you rethink the human condition and how simple things are so important when everything is taken from you, even your freedom.
Excellent reaction. You just earned a subscriber, well done.
This is the best review of this movie I've ever seen. Great job!
The best reaction and analysis of this movie I've seen. Well done. Subscribed.
Great reaction! Keep up the good work!
Recently found your channel, loving the content my guy. Shawshank is on my top 3 movies, you did it justice.
Just an amazing analysis! You completely got it.
I loved your reaction, and I felt you chocked up at the end. It’s really a well written movie and the ending made it awesome! 👌🏼
In the book, Red was an Irish man. And his last name was Redding. Easy to tell how he got his nickname. Andy wanted the rock hammer to make chess pieces. But when he started carving his name on the wall. That's when he decided he could use it to go through the wall too. Read " The Counte of Monte Christo ". Lot's of inspirations from that book. I have the movie. It's good.
This is my favourite film, and I must have watch it a dozen times. But watching your reaction made me realise things I never did before. Red losing hope first and foremost, you really highlighted that and it'll change the way I watch the movie from now on. Also the poster comment made me laugh out loud, now that was a maverick observation!
Years ago, I used to say to just give it time and this movie will eventually become the number one timeless classic in movie history. Fast forward to today, and it is up there with "The Godfather" and "Citizen Kane". Give it more time and like wine, it will age even better.
Love your analysis afterword. Thank you!
Well done. I like to point out that the redemption is Red's, not Andy's. Andy was innocent and did not need to be redeemed. Red was guilty of murder - he took a life. But through his friendship with Andy, Red was able to give Andy his life back and thus atone for his crime. This balanced the scales, redeeming Red and making him worthy of a return to society.
Best movie ever. "Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies."
I really enjoyed all your commentary at the end of the film. It showed you were really taking everything in.
Your analysis was spot on. Fantastic. Subbed. 👍
What a great movie. I'm completely shocked you havent seen this play on TV on like every channel 500 times a year lol. Odds are you could find a channel thats playing this right now. Subbed.
This & The Green Mile I consider some of the most impactful movies. They belong to my favourites list.
That uppa rooooom
😂😂😂 Oh my god, I LOVE the movie “Life”. It’s such an underrated gem!
This film here is remarkable. Going to shut up and watch your reaction now. Take care!
My guy, you are so on point 😂
A beautiful ending to a beautiful film.
Amazing reaction and more! Just found your channel.
New subscriber for 2 reasons .. 1) This is one of my favorite movies and I enjoyed your reaction very much, 2) I went to your channel while you were talking and saw you reacted to Train To Busan!!! Another favorite that few have seen (some people miss a lot of good stuff cause they don't want to read captions) I knew then you are my kind of people :-) I am watching that video next! I look forward to many more movies with you!
Glad that you enjoy.
Morgan freeman is such a great actor. Cool person too.
This Movie was the "FIRST" time Morgan Freeman became Famous for his "Voiceovers".
Loved your reaction...subscribed!
My favourite movie. Glad so many reactions to this and all love it.
The thing that completely blew my mind was finding out it was written by Stephen King after having watched it. I had no idea of what it was about going into it, and was blown away after I found that out.
It was interesting to hear your take on what was under the volcanic glass and when Andy put it there. In the book, Andy created his fake identity just before going in to prison and hid all his papers in the box: ID, stocks, and bonds etc. I feel like this is the only real shortcoming of the film as it makes the volcanic glass seem like an afterthought, while in the book, Andy's plan hinges on the box remaining undiscovered for nearly 20 years
It's almost like one "lucky" firm got all the contracts to construct those institutional buildings.
Great analysis. Thanks
"We were the Lords of all creation."
I love watching the reactions to the "When do we eat" scene. Everyone is always like, "Man, you fucked up." 😅
This is the first time Morgan freeman ever did narration. It was a perfect move lol
You can't watch this movie enough! Bro you did a great reaction and got the whole meaning!" Hope is a good thing "!
Amazing movie. Thanks for let us watch it with you!
Red tells Andy that hope is just some shitty pipe dream and then Andy never gave up hope and crawls through a shitty pipe to escape
