    Been using a DCT for like 10 years. I just keep going back. I break 1 hinge, and it just fits that break in the best. I like the fact that it has the laces on the fingers that let you curl the fingers. It makes the pocket deeper. Rawlings makes a budget dt too i think for the gg elite. Its just the pattern that works time in and time out.

    Great video. Thanks for doing one about 1B mitts {my favorite 😃}. The Wilson 1620 is just an awkward looking and feeling mitt. I've tried it at Dick's and there is just nothing about it that I like. The Marucci being too small is consistent with my experience with Marucci 1B mitts. I sold a Marucci that was labeled as 13" but was really 12.5" tops. The Rawlings PRO DCT pattern has been around for decades. Whereas it might not be the best mitt for everybody, it is pretty much the standard 1B mitt among pro first basemen. It checks most of the boxes and gets the job done. The Wilson 2820 is a really cool mitt (I own a Rawlings FM20XL, which is the closest Rawlings equivalent). Unlike my Rawlings, the Wilson 2820 has an open back (in contrast to most other two-hinge patterns, which are closed back). The two hinges give a wider, deeper pocket than you would expect. The 12.25" on mitts like this is really laughable, as they are at least 12.5" and really play up to about 12.75" or 13" in terms of feel. Compared to mitts like the Marucci, they feel huge.

    As someone who played first, and then became a dad and a coach, the first base mitt is the move for dads/coaches. Break it in two in the pink and you have a perfect "do it all mitt". It can catch bullpens for your kid up until they're in their early teens. You can play catch with players who want to "show coach how hard I can throw" but you can also demonstrate ground balls, and other fielding drills without switching gloves. Rawlings Pro broken in 2 in the pinky is the way.

    The 13" Mizuno Pro H web made from Kip leather is the best 1st Basemen's mitt ever made! Once broken in the H web stretched a little and molded to ball, it creates the best pocket ever, almost like a lacrosse stick. It makes turning dps easy because the ball is in the exact same spot every time, it is also one of the bigger 13" models so it increases your range.

    Something that i think should also be brought up is the actual design of the gloves. On the Rawlings and Marucci gloves, the top of the fingers is sort of separated, which helps create sort of a bowl-effect, while on the Wilsons, its more of a solid plate it bounces down.

  • @Dr.MalcomsBrokenLeg

    Back in the day, I was the super utility player. I could play anywhere at good to great level. Going into new teams, we always had players who only played one or two positions. I always could play anywhere, literally. Went into first base during some high school years because apparently people are afraid of the ball even at that level and make terrible throws 🤣 So, I stepped up and took the reigns. I used a TPX from Louisville and omgsh, It was THE. BEST. I believe it was a 12.75. More of a 1 hinge break in and that makes sense looking back on it. Picking you want to use that pinky side hinge to trap the ball into the pocket behind the thumb. The thumb side you want to be strong so you don't break your thumb and lose the ball or accidentally be too pushy with it and block the ball out. I wore it traditional. That glove helped me thrive there even though it was not my main position. It helped me gain a lot of confidence at the position knowing the glove was doing its job and it was all up to me now. No clue what model type it was or anything else. But, it swallowed the ball no matter what.

    for what it’s worth, wilsons use narrower lace in the web than every other brand, so not surprising to see a popped lace from the used one. for example a rawlings 1st base mitt (and all their gloves for that matter, same with every other brand i know of) will have 3/16” lace for pretty much the whole glove, but the actual lace that runs through the web and web spiral (and what runs across the top of the fingers on gloves) and holds the web to the body of the glove is 1/4”, but on a wilson it’s 3/16” throughout. they do the same thing with all their gloves as well, which i don’t think is a huge deal cause that doesn’t take the same impact as a 1st base mitt.

    I agree on the Rawlings . I just got my 12 year old son a similar glove to that PRO DCT , the R2G 12.25 Contour and he loves it . He's been using Rawlings Encores the past few years and while those have been great gloves and can take a pretty good beating I felt like we needed to take a step up to the heart of the hides . The only issue I have experienced with it thus far is the heel is very stiff which is to be expected on higher quality gloves and I've put a ton of mallet work into it and it's still pretty stiff . Feel like breaking in another 1st base glove lol ?
    I was kind of hoping Rawling would come out with a beefy Gamer XLE 1st base glove . He uses a Gamer XLE on the mound or in the infield and I don't feel like in that price range there's any other glove that can compete with it , but I can understand Rawlings not going that route as they already have the R9 and Encores .

    It's not the difference between the A2000 and the A2K that is making the difference, it's the difference between the Wilson 1620 vs the 2820 pattern. Both the A2000 and A2K each come in either pattern, but the 2820 has the dual hinge design. That said, I have a 1620, and you REALLY have to work in the pocket. Like get a mallet and STRETCH the base of the web/pocket area. It took a lot of time, but it got there. Probably wished I got the 2820, but the 1620 is, as you mentioned, incredibly comfortable.

Anyways, 2 hours before the game, omw home, I stopped at Play it Again, picked out the most affordable, but also the best quality glove and found the Rawlings Player Preferred 12.5 inch, and that was about two years ago. 2-3 seasons later, and it's still my gamer. (yes I still play first base.) About $90

    something i will say that i’ve found after playing first base is not pressing the finger part of the glove. keep it as straight as possible to keep as much surface area open as possible. im a huuuuuuge flair guy, there isn’t a glove i own that doesnt have a flaired thumb or pinky but i’ve stuck to leaving the fingers flat. i have the same 44 glove that was in the video and i can positively say that it is by far and away the best 1st base glove i’ve had from how well it broke in, how it almost molded to my hand, how deep the pocket is and overall comfort of the glove. overall, whoever sees this doesn’t have to listen but i just wanted to give my two cents. hope this finds anyone that reads or tries it well

    44's RB5 is my favorite mitt I've ever found as a lifelong first baseman. Wilson makes trash mitts honestly at this point, look at what keeps happening to their MLB guys like Vladdy jr, balls love going through their mitts more than any other brand.

    Pro DCT has been around a long time and is the gold standard for 1B mitts. You can find it for $250 most of the time the Wilson A2K is $400.

    • @ballgloveking
      @ballgloveking  Před 4 měsíci

      Yes that’s true but you can also consistently find A2Ks for the similar prices so it goes both ways

      @@ballgloveking unfortunately, nobody we know likes the non leather backing. It makes the glove a little lighter, but two other 1st basemen we know said the same thing. It just throw the balance and feel of the glove off. Wilson ONLY has SS backed mitts in A2K and A2000. My son uses a 15 year old Wilson A2800 that is better than what they make today. He has switched to 3rd/Short this year, but still may play some first. We have three 1B mitts. The A2800, a slightly beat up 2012 PRODCT Horween and a new not fully broken in PRODCT. The Horween glove is just heavy as heck. He still uses the Wilson A2800, but it is near the end of its life. He won’t play much first if at all this high school season. The Horween DCT weighs 2.5 OZ more than the the new one.

    (good budget option) I would actually recommend my first base mitt Rawlings sand lot first base it’s not the current one it’s the one with the brown and black web but it’s the same thing you can get it for 90 on Rawlings website I believe rn I bought it because a phew years back my cheap Rawlings first base mit ripped on the web I believe it was called the Rawlings select but the sand lot for about a season of use has been way better and was pretty much the same price I bought the other one for and the sand lot has a nice pattern I would say the pocket is good in between mid and big but 2 in the pink is probably out of 10 around a 9.8 (I wear it 2 in the pink finger kind of hanging near the spot you would put your finger on using it straight up) btw a kid probably threw 70 on what would be a close play and it went right threw the pocket and it wasent quite ripped on all of the web but it would easily go thew the web
