  • 10 days before delivering his talk at TEDxAuckland 2017, conservationist Captain Pete Bethune was knifed in the chest while chasing wildlife smugglers in the Amazon. In one of most emotional speeches you will hear, Pete argues that we can all lead extraordinary and meaningful lives, but the key is to find and stand for a cause you truly believe in. From serving months in a maximum security prison for fighting Japanese whalers, to saving endangered red monkeys from poachers in the Amazon, Pete Bethune’s story will thrill, move, and inspire you.
    Pete Bethune takes conservation to the extreme. As the founder of Earthrace Conservation, Pete is a world record holder, circling the globe four times on his powerboat Earthrace. His missions have seen him shot at, run over by a Japanese security vessel, incarcerated in Libya and Japan, and held under armed guard in a Guatemalan Military camp.
    As the producer of his show ‘The Operatives’, Pete runs a team of former special forces operatives to combat wildlife poaching, smuggling and illegal fishing in Africa, Asia and Central America. He also works closely with government enforcement units training them in coastal surveillance and hostile vessel takedown. At the heart of it all, Pete is a ship captain with an environmental edge. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    When will they ever learn. Humans don't deserve this planet. Thank you Pete for opening our eyes. I wish those whose eyes should be opened would take notice of what they are doing to their grandchildren's and great grandchildren's world.

    If a cause isn’t worth dying for is it really worth living for. Some things you’d sacrifice even yourself for a bigger purpose.

    Watching Pete Bethune risking his life by whistleblowing against these poachers in the jungles to save these animals is amazing. It reminds of how how Julian Assange and Chelsea Manning had to risk their lives of exposing war crimes on WikiLeaks for the public to see. I hope that Julian Assange will one day be set free.

    • @kuroodo_
      @kuroodo_ Před rokem

      Don't want to discredit you or anything, but you need to be careful here. For all you know the seagull was probably protecting something like its nest. Or perhaps they were both fighting for food. Maybe because of you, the seagull didn't get to eat that day. Best let nature do its own thing, and instead save nature from humans that prevent it from doing its own thing.

    Jesus christ. That was sooo painful to listen to. Just Spare us Pete. Talk about embellishing a whole bunch of stories. First off..You dont mention you were in fact trying to sell your boat (that was in terrible condition) and had been trying to sell it for 18 months prior to Ady gil purchasing it. Hardly someone thinking about going into marine conservation.. And one of the guys said you had to google Sea Shepherd and whaling. And you dont mention the Ady Gil vessel needing a full refit to become sea worthy because it had been left and was in a terrible state. You had no interest in using it for "marine conservation" if you're actively trying to sell it.
    Secondly Australia already had plans in place to take Japan to court well before that campaign and it had nothing to do with you being detained. You're trying to ride those coat tails.
    Thirdly.. Many other people had boarded japanese whaling vessels in the past. It was not "history making". And there was a 99% chance the japanese would just throw you back overboard. So history making? Pfft. You also didnt "expose" the seal clubbing in namibia. There was footage all over youtube and still is from other orgs well before you took similar footage. Its not exposing something when its already been exposed and put out on youtube many times. Your stories are kinda like the bible. Half baked stories that are made up for impact. And the sobbing is a little put on. But Maybe it works for you all this sobbing and nonsense story telling. But jesus man come on. Talk about stretching the truth. I will give you one thing... you are great at pulling the wool over peoples eyes and making up stories.

      Scathing, the guy has PTSD from solitary confinement for 5 months. And gave up everything most people wouldn't even consider. Granted that the guy more than just registers on the selfishness spectrum as a result of his extreme drive but cut the fella a wee bit of slack. He's spreading an epically touching message whether it is downright honest or not. Side note: No other carbon fibre boat has done more than two circumnavigations of the globe and not required some TLC. Far out
