- Testing the vector optics sentinel x 10-40x50 rifle scope on both .22lr and sub12 air rifles.
The world of precision bench rest can be an expensive place to be, the sentinel x sets the new standard of affordable optics.
Its not perfect but given the very modest price point its hard to be too fussy, but iam... it does have a few small issues but it can certainly perform and will allow me to venture into precision benchrest with only minimal outlay.
i review the scope after using it outdoors and on the indoor range on custom br targets and standard 25 yard nsra benchrest targets.
it would suit all styles of wrabf bench rest and nsra styles on both air rifles and rim fire .22lr

Excellent and accurate review, thank-you. I'm a pensioner on a budget, building a 25m bench-rest air rifle and have this scope. The image quality doesn't compare well with others I have owned from Leupold, Nikon or Hawke. It is however perfectly useable for bench-rest and is hard to fault at the price. I initially had an issue with parallax. My solution was to fit a deep rubber eye cup which helps align my eye dead-centre on the optical axis.
@@TheRealWindlePoons hi mate, try popping a fishing coaster on the px wheel and give it a real fine tune. On mine it's just past off clear to be perfectly px free .
I reckon it'll work for me for a good while whilst I venture Into the br discipline 😉
About 12 months ago, when I bought two Vector Optics 12-60x60 scopes, one for ISSF/WBSF .22lr @ 100 yards, and the other for WBSF .308 @ 600 yards... They were £400 each, but quickly dropped in price after a while.
I've been using one of these for about a year, I do have to reset the zero regularly, but when it's on its good, I use it at 25mag at 25yds , I'm the current Surrey Open 25yd champ so for the money it's great value 👍
Is that a UK wide series mate or just Surrey county? I'm looking at doing a few comps at the club, we might get to compete against each other 🥳

It ok but I went for the athlon argos at £420 and I have to say there's absolutely no need to buy better it's stunning

Great stuff Mr T. After 50 years of rifle shooting nothing has changed; The right gun for the purpose intended, ammunition that works with that gun and fathom the max accurate range of that ammunition, a reliable/consistent scope and mounts that your brain can cope with, are you safe with your set-up, practice and work on your cardio!
More cardio, more practice, KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) and NEVER EVER GET FRUSTRATED WHEN IT GOES WRONG! It WILL go wrong, walk away, calm down, think and start with the simplest solution. Then cross training to widen your skills. Today my cross training was bench rest with targets at 15m and 25m. A4 white cardboard covered in smelly stuffs (don't ask), wait for a fly to land, focus on that fly, set zoom on that fly and correct for elevation + windage in brain and track the little pests (2 breakaway throw levers were used). Regulated JTS Airacuda Max (£500), Wulf 1/2 mil dot scope (£60), Hawke Weaver mounts (£15), RWS Hobby .22 flatties and the same bipod as you. I got 28 flies from 30 shots. My 9 year old got 31 flies from 30 shots (one was getting a piggyback ride from his friend). Please keep showing how hard this simple sport is and remember, if you aint having fun you're doing it wrong. Oh and work on your cardio

I've set myself some pretty mad challenges to film, I quite fancy competing against the .22lr lr boys at 50 odd metres,with the sub12 🤔😂
It's good that you put the sunglasses on your hat so that the sun doesn't shine in your eyes when you're in the shade.
Where are the high quality optics with low zoom power scopes? Even Hawke are just upping the zoom ranges for buyers that think more zoom is better. For hunting I need a 4-6 power, so a zoom starting at 3 or 4 is a neccesity, and from camera lenses we know that 3 times zoom ratio is best for quality, so a 3-9, or 4-12 power side focus is ideal.
Great stuff Mr T. my opinion on scopes for what it's worth;
1- Cheap, reliable, simple 1/2 mil dot (oh how I would have loved one of those 35 years ago), objective focus with a throw lever(to give a visual for range) and practice, practice practice on a known sized target, learn hold over, hold under for range and elevation of target and burn it into your brain, same for windage. If you are FT shooting the same range or pest control on a single farm it becomes second nature but takes time and limits the range.
2-Mid range side focus, big tube, massive objective lens and range calculator on your phone. But you can get better if you spend a couple of hundred quid on a better scope, then £500 more, then £1000 more (the chasing of the law of diminishing returns).
Neither is a general best way but both rely on practice, learning, understanding, muscle memory and cardio or CARDIO! Something simple like walking the kids to school or pumping up your PCPs with a Hill pump will build cardio (the first time I pumped up 50 bars on a gun I was borderline heart attack, now I can do 2 guns from 100 to 200 bar without breaking into a sweat). Just free standing, picking up and aiming your air rifle counts for cardio.
You commented on my last reply, yes it is hard, if it was simple we would be playing golf. Good luck with your 50 shoot off against .22lr! My Ruger 10/22 competition with CCI subs drop about 1" and dead straight in a breeze @ 50 and a three feet drop at 100. CCI Stingers 3" drop @ 100.
Your 50 challenge, they should be using a batch of .22lr Eley where 0.5 grain difference in bullets makes F all difference @50. For you 0.1 grain or a slight imperfection in the pellet is exponential from 20 onwards.

With optics, generally you get what you pay for. I have tried several Vector Optics scopes and been dissapointed with everyone. Glass is milky on anything but lowest mags and mechanically they struggled to hold zero. I also found the ocular lens very intolerant to mis alignment, if you move your head slightly the image dissappears or distorts. Sorry but thats my experience and opinion 😞

You're absolutely correct ,in the world of optics especially,you do get what you pay for. This is an entry level scope for a fairly small range of disciplines.
I guess in time we will all see how my experience pans out with the scope as I venture a bit further into br. I kinda miss my usual big scopes optical clarity right now though,but too heavy for weight class and just marginally too thick a reticles for br. 😉

Fair comment. The Vector Optics scopes I have are perfectly sharp but very low contrast compared to costlier competition. My go-to brand is still Hawke, probably twice the cost of Vector but better value than the 4 figure+ brands. The Airmax and Sidewinder ranges work well on my guns.

Iv got one very good for £200 , also I have the vector continental 5x 30 + 56 scopes which is very clear , but just bought a falcon t50i 34 mm tube 5x50 x 60 for £400 which is amazing, thanks for sharing all your videos
Hi mate, that t50i is a very special bit of kit especially at the current price. I'm waiting on the new endura to arrive. Kinda suits my usual shooting a bit better being ffp. I'm kinda tempted by the t50i for a high end br rig🤔
The sentinel should be a great value entry into the discipline though and will be great to add some more affordable stuff onto the channel. Some of the other gear is a bit fancy and I'd like to show you all how well some of the affordable stuff can perform. Cheers for being a part of the channel 😉
Picked a similar scope up. I’m only 2 shoots in and it’s nice to have a ffp for not too much money. Yet to conclude on what I think.
Good review. I don't own this particular scope but have a Vector Optics 6-24 scope and have no issues with it. I've also converted the dovetail rails on my Air Arms S410 and Weirauch HW100 to picatinny rails using Eagle Vision low profile adapter rails. I much prefer picatinny mounts to dovetail mounts and it also means I dont have to buy 2 sets of mounts if I want to use my scopes on my firearm rifles which all have picatinny rails.
Don't get me wrong mate,I much prefer picatinny on the whole and I've also converted the xti over with the eagle Vis adapters. But given 90% of typical br rigs are dovetail and especially given the price point, the additional cost of adapters isnt great for those on a budget. Vector actually make some nice dovetail rings too.. I just thought it a bit of a strange choice. 😉

@@NoirCordis absolutely mate, I think (hope) I can get a card or 2 cleared with the sentinel. Once I can get a dedicated rig set aside,that should also limit the big shifts in the reticle that it struggles with 😉
Vector scopes..really good value for your buck... the orion series r great value....
bang on mate . i have owned this scope for probably 6/8 months and all you have said is dead on . really good scope for the money but there are a couple of small kinks . 35 mag for sure not 40 . and turrets certainly do not track so well . again ok but definitely red to be aware of it . all in all though it’s a great scope for entry level bench that’s for sure
Cheers mate, I'm sure as an entry level br scope the sentinel will get me up to a good standard. The tracking is a bit annoying but when I can build a dedicated br rig ,I won't have to make the big adjustments gone from 22lr to air. So shouldn't be a big issue then 😉

How does yours track mate? Hopefully when I can set it onto it's own br specific rig,it won't be doing the big shifts that I currently have to, between air and .22lr and should be fine I hope.

On the pro version you have an illuminated reticle for dark targets. Tbh ive not had the issues that you have on full mag. Its a great budget scope that plenty of people at my club use.
Got the sentinel x pro on my Styer lg110 and can't fault it at 35 mag paid £180 for it with mounts, sunshade and caps .
I have two of these. One is the Pro that comes with an illuminated red dot reticule and sunshade. The ret is very fine and takes a lot of practice to fully get used to it, but after a few months I'm starting to hit some good scores. Much better outside as you said. For sub £200 it's great vfm, if you do your bit!
I've been lucky so far mate and taken to the sentinel quickly. It helps that I use so many different scopes when working so i sort of get used to being able to chop and change. Ill be super happy if I can clear a card with it 😉
A few months ago I bought the westhunter WH-1 6-24x50 scope. Though I haven't had any issues personally with it and have found that for the price it is an excellent option though I would appreciate your thoughts on it
I've got two continentals, great scopes but not suited for Hft. Bought an Optisan Cp, compared to the Continental the image quality is piss poor but for some reason I shoot better with the CP? Cracking video as always mate
Funny little scopes the CP... I have one too. Purpose built to compete at hft,reduced eye relief , anti glare coatings inside the tube, increased dof and low parralax error. I shoot hft better with the CP than my old nightforce Nxs compact. Just does the job with no fuss. 😉

Did you buy it blind mate? Prob not the best term actually 🫣 without looking through it first...? Always risky with scopes as some we just can't get along with. A bit like my sightron hft scopes☹️

Great Scopes. Very popular brand here in South Africa due to our horrible exchange rate making imported kit very expensive. Excellent value for the price. I tried the GECO brand 7gr pellets out the other day. Saw a real improvement in accuracy over the JSB Target and Simply ranges. How about a review on Wadcutter brands. Nothing out there on the Tube. Great channel.

I've had a play with the h&n Econ 11s they are really well made and great for shorter ranges. I don't know what they cost there but here they are under £4 a tin 🫣

Had one a few months now, and if im honest im struggling to get on with it.
Overall, it was a good scope, but my eyes don't really like it compared to my Hawke compact that it replaced which i found less sensitive.
Yeah mate it's so important that we find a scope that suits our eyesight, even if it's one that doesn't really suit the discipline,if it works and your eye likes it,that's half the battle won 😉

@@Qwcgvv I'm not quite 40 yet but I'm already noticing quite a deteriation in my eye sight the last 10 years or so. It makes finding the right scope a challenge for sure. Maybe one day I'll find a scope that I can use for 90% of my shooting. That would be great instead of having a bunch of different scopes on different rigs 🤔

Morning TG, I have a few of the lower mag Vector scopes and have found them to be quite good value for money and certainly worth it if you are on a budget. 24 mag is the highest I have, would certainly be interesting to get a higher mag scope to see what it would be like shooting with one. Morning mate, the sentinel x is pretty good at it's lower mag range, certainly considering the modest price. It's fairly typical of entry level higher mag scopes though in the light gathering and image quality washes out in the top 3rd of its mag range. It's still plenty useable though. The super fine br ret is great for the discipline it was built for but will be hard going for much else.
The one that really puts a spanner in the works is the new t50i. It's double the price though and quite a lot bigger but optically ,it's alot better than many at its price.that will double duty as a br scope and incredibly capable ft scope. I'll try and borrow one off my mate and give it a test.
I have the Vector Veyron 6-24 x 44 on my TX200 springer. The image is sharp but low contrast (other posters find them "milky"). As an OAP, in future I would spend double and get higher contrast optics from someone like Hawke.

This is the thing with optics eh... Some we get on with great, some we struggle with.. good news you have the hawke that suits your eye though 😉
I have one of these specifically for 25m bench-rest and would not consider using it for anything else. For multiple distances 10-50 yds I'll stick with my 6-24 x 56 Hawke Sidewinder. Not FFP but once you learn how the SR Pro II Reticle works with your gun, its hard to beat.
I would fully expect a £320 Hawke to be better than a £160 Vector Optics, scopes definitely improve with cost IMO.

@@RenegadeAL at this rate I might well look at having my own ones printed mate, it's definitely been enlightening trying loads of different types. Some I find are way better to be more precise aiming on. The 9xbr targets are also great for a bit of practice on🤔
It's probably worth making them with 16 or even 25 targets on each card. After all, you don't need all of the scoring rings for practicing.

@@Sae-fu5ch it's pretty good at 20mag tbh, I don't think at this point it'll be holding me back, time will tell and it'll all go on film as I progress in a bit of sideline br.

I’m not a fan of vector scopes. All the ones I’ve looked through the glass is not great I’ve seen free no brand scopes with better glass. Save up and buy a better brand.
