    Almost like BMW wants you to loose an engine. It’s convenient to check your oil from inside the car but there should be a dipstick as a backup. Considering most BMW owners can’t even open the hood, they’re definitely not checking there oil. They just bring it in every 10k miles. One thing the sensor doesn’t tell you if you over fill it. You could be a quart over and it just shows full.

    I don't understand the logic of torqueing a bolt, then adding a specific degree of rotation. why not just torque it a little tighter. what is the difference? thanks.

    • @WarrenMillerIII
      @WarrenMillerIII Pƙed 2 lety +3

      In a nutshell, engineers that devise strategies for fasteners have found that you get more consistent results (i.e., clamping force) by first snugging up the parts to ensure that the parts are in firm contact (the torque specification) then use the fastener thread pitch and material (plasticity) to figure out how much rotation is required (the angle specification) to achieve the target clamping force. Torque specification alone can be dicey because it depends strongly on friction (e.g., whether the parts are wet or dry, how clean the mating surfaces are, etc.).

    • @Jonj57
      @Jonj57 Pƙed 2 lety

      Like Warren said toque specs can be really unreliable as the threads could be wet with oil and lower the friction required to tighten the bolt. Or there could be rust on the threads and make it even more difficult.

    • @grantkondourajian6150
      @grantkondourajian6150 Pƙed 2 lety

      Im not an engineer, but from what ive heard, the bolt is elastic and they want you to intentionally stretch the bolt so that when the engine cools down and parts contract, the part stays sealed. But, they are a single use bolt.

    • @nicholasash9389
      @nicholasash9389 Pƙed 2 lety

      The initial torque spec brings the bolt or stud to the start of its stretch. From there the use of degree takes the bolt or stud into its stretch and then the bolt or stud is constantly trying to relax to is original length. It can't relax and therefore maintains a constant tension on itself making it harder to become loose. The BMW engineers would have factored in thermal cycling amongst other things into the spec.

    Whilst I love this channel for its sole focus on BMW cars, how to repair, upgrade, mod them and maintain them.
    I do wish they would stop just focusing on petrol (gasoline for those in the US) cars.
    Yes the N20/B48 and S55 Engine have no dipstick, this has been the case for many years since I think around 2009. Its pretty much the same in the EU
    But @Kies Motorsports, I think has never, ever featured a diesel powered BMW? Whilst i know the US has an aversion for diesel, can someone shed any light if BMW sell diesel cars there? Its pretty much still one of the most popular fuels over in the EU.
    In the UK (where I am from) I would say you are more likely to see a BMW diesel than BMW petrol (gasoline)
    Currently all BMW diesels have a dipstick.
    I had one in my 2007 BMW 320d, 2014 330d GT and 2016 435d
    My BMW 435d X Drive with M Sport trim (for example) has the N57 engine, it does around 40mpg UK (33.3mpg US Gallons), one tank will take me around 480miles from full to empty.

    • @crujones5319
      @crujones5319 Pƙed 2 lety

      In the US, diesel powered passenger cars are almost non-existent. I think you can blame the horribly smoky, noisy and smelly Mercedes Benz diesels from back in the 70's for putting negative connotations about diesels in the minds of the American car-buying public. Either that or there's some insidious political plot behind it. But Kies doesn't cover diesels mainly cuz there just aren't any here.
