What Bernie accomplished during these 3 years including the year the Flyers lost to the Canadiens is stuff of legends. To this day I'm wondering how things would have played out in 76 if Rick McLeish one of the most talented players in the league at the time and Bernard Parent the leagues primary goalie if they would have been healthy 🤔🤔🤔

The family missed this game because it was on a Sunday, and nobody wanted to drive to Philly from Boston, and then drive back to Beantown. Always enjoyed the Dave Schultz/Terry O'Reilly spats. This game was a little bit different, I would gauge it as the best hockey playoff game of all time, even though the Bruins lost. I am still haunted by the announcer, "Save! Parent!....Save! Yet after seeing a few of these cup final games between them and the Bruins after 47 years, I can clearly see how good of an overall team they were. Classic bump-and-grind game from the era. The reason we did not see more of a very good Maple Leafs team was these Bruins, Flyers and of course the Habs who were even better and needed to be as the Leafs were stacked with guys like Sittler, McDonald, Salming, Turnbull, and Mike Palmateer in goal. They had a formidable enforcer-type player of their own, too, in Dave "Tiger" Williams.

      Arthur Rousakos wow. Even though they were "an up and coming team" for the Flyers an expansion team just 7 years earlier to beat one arguably one of the great teams in NHL history shocked the hockey and sports world alike. Looking back it amazing that the Big Bad Bruins of Orr and Espo only won 2 cups. That combo should have another title or two. Again it sad Orr brilliant career was cut short by injuries.
      And the Flyers were so underrated as a great team. The Broad Street Bullies personality overshadowed a great player like Bobby Clarke, Parent etc.

      AmericanGiant100 B's didn't win more cups because of their two superstars, Espo and Orr, it was only Orr who shined in the playoffs. Espo generally was a big choke especially in the finals. Orr's two Conn Smythe Trophies attest to this.

      Freddie Last although Parent probably stole the Cup for the Flyers in 1974, I think 1971 was a different story. Dryden played very well but the Bruins lost primarily for two reasons, 1) they were so focused on winning the division, the only thing they failed to do the previous season, and broke so many league records and won the division so early, T. Johnson rested many of the players the last two weeks of the season that they lost their edge going into the playoffs, 2) they blew a 5-1 lead in game 2 after winning game 1. Really if they won game 2 they probably win the series in 5. Although there would have been a lot more work to do the rest of the way vs NYR and Chicago I feel confident they would have beaten these opponents as they did throughout that period. Really the inability to beat Canadiens during this period of the jinx in '69, when they were already better, and in '71 denied the B's of 4 straight Cups.

    I vividly remember watching, as a ten year old, my Bruins lose this game in spring 1974. Even remember the time on the clock when Orr was penalized on Clarke. Orr messed up playing Clarke...had the speed and angle, should have stayed on Clarke's left and rode him off the puck. As great as he was, I remember watching Orr make basic defensive mistakes, which were forgiven, because he was so great offensively. MacLeish should have won an award for that dive...Bucyk was going for the puck, and you can see him turning to avoid dumping MacLeish. Shit call. Orr was dumped from behind in the Flyers end later...no call. The amount of hooking, holding and interference in the league in these days was infuriating.

We hear about how vicious the Flyers were but nobody really hit that much in those days. It was just a lot of stick work.

  • @jaykendall7557
    @jaykendall7557 Před 9 lety +1

    Let me say this. The rivalry between the Bruins and the Flyers in the 70's was NHL Hockey at it's best. We will never see it again, and it was a lot of fun..Lets' look at these four playoff series.
    In 1974 we had a 2-1 lead in game 2 with a minute left. If we win, we go up 2-0 in the series and that would be very tough for Philly. Our "all world good offense average defenseman " Bobby Orr had the puck behind our net.. Rick Macliesh took it away from Bobby, passed it to the Moose who shot it into the net to force OT.
    We lost in OT because somebody left Bobby Clarke alone in front of our net.
    SO now it's 1-1. Gilles Gilbert was no match for Bernie. Gilbert allowed 8 goals in games 3 nd 4 while all we could get in two games were 3 scores on Bernie. We rebounded with a solid win in game 5 in Boston. We lost game six 1-0 as Bernie shut the door. ALWAYS REMEMBER in playoffs GOALTENDING RULES
    In that series the better goalie won. One note.Bobby Orr and ART SKOV had a running fued for years. Skov whistled Bobby off for a minor hold on CLARKE.This took Bobby off the ice for 2 of the last 3 minutes of game six.
    Harry Sinden ws so outraged he was almost arrested for pounding on the door of the refs locker room trying to get a punch on Skov.. ART Skov ws a moron.
    In 1976, we had just finished up a grinding series with the LA Kings . You think Bernie was good, you should have seen Rogie VACHON . We finally beat them at home
    in a thrilling 7th game. But we lost to injury Schmautz,Ratelle, Park and Cashman. The rest of the team was so weary from that LA series. Worst blow of all Gerry Cheevers
    tearing a muscle in game 6 in LA. We had to go again with GILBERT and he was horrible. You rolled right over us in 5 games.
    In 1977 this time we had a healthy Gerry Cheevers and new weapons, Rick Middleton, Peter McNAB, Stan Jonathan Rick Smith returned from the WHA. anf the team was healthy. We won game 1 in OT against BERNIE Philly came back with Stephenson
    for game two..
    It went into OT and Gerry Cheevers was sensational making 49 saves as Terry Oreilly ended it in double OT.. In game three I was there and even took a home movie. I'll burn you a DVD if you give me your mailing address My e-mail (cargabma@aol.com)
    In game 4 Cheevers shut you out 3-0 to complete the sweep. FRED SHERO SAID CHEEVERS WAS INCREDIBLE THE WHOLE SERIES. BEST OPPOSING GOALIE
    HE EVER FACED. Are you going to contradict Fred Shero?
    In 1978 CHEEVERS HANDILY outplayed Bernie.as we won in 5 games. IMHO Cheevers was a better goalie and there is no way Bernie comes out on top. In head to
    head play Gerry was 7-0 against Bernie. Still put your money on Bernie over Cheevers?

    • @DonQwantsyou
      @DonQwantsyou Před 8 lety

      JAY DAVIDSON One note on your comment about goaltending in the playoffs Certainly it's very important to have a very good goalie to win the Stanley Cup. But unless you have a Dryden, Parent, or more recently a Griguere or Thomas you're not going to steal one with just a goalie. Cheevers was at times a good money goalie in his career, but he won 2 Cups with the Bruins when Orr twice won the Smythe trophy, whereas Dryden, Parent, and Thomas won the Smythe trophy when their teams won. Dryden, Parent, and Thomas were the DECISIVE factors why their teams won, Cheevers was never. I liked Cheevers and I know he is a Hall of Famer, and he was probably the most effective at coming out of his net and handling the puck. That being said, please don't blame poor Gillie for the loss to the Flyers when he only lost decisive game 2 in overtime after making several great saves before the Flyers won, and only losing 1-0 in game 6. In addition the Bruins very not as strong that year as they were in !970 and '72 when they had Cheevers in goal.

However Leach was a damn good goalscorer as well, didn't he set a record for goals in playoffs in 1976, and he scored a few vs Dryden, I wish the B's had kept him. Well Cherry had a change of heart in 1979 and gave Gillie his chance vs C's in 1979, which turned out to be the best playoff of his career. I'll check out the George Stombo Espo interview.

    • @DonQwantsyou
      @DonQwantsyou Před 8 lety

      JAY DAVIDSON Ok, I looked at the interview, a lot of stuff there, are you a writer or something? Very thorough account of Espo's career which I generally agree with. You received some hostile comments for it, I didn't look at all of it yet, which is understandable, Espo was a hero to many fans at the time and also for me being an Italian-American growing up in inner city Boston. However he wasn't at his best in playoffs save for 1970, did not do much against Rangers or Canadiens in finals or playoffs which you document very clearly, and as I've learned over the years, has a rather cocky and arrogant attitude. I didn't like what he said about the Russian players, that they were ugly or that the summit series was a war and he would have killed them. Doesn't seem sportsmanlike. He must have applauded when Clarke broke Kharlamov's ankle which was decisive in the series. Espo often said his B's teams should have won 5 Cups but didn't because they liked to party and have fun. looks like Espo was probably one of the biggest party animals during the playoffs. It's interesting what you relate about Espo negotiating with WHA during '74 Finals as I know Espo and Guidolin didn't like each other. When Guidolin left he said the "Godfather" Espo was running the team.

Won game 7 vs LA with 2 goals. NEVER SAW ESPO do anything like that. In the summer of 76 Harry got us Middleton for Ken Hodge, Peter McNab for Andre Savard , Stan Jonathan, from the minors, sent Joe Zanuasi to Oakland for Rick Smith. Now along with Sheppard, O'Reilly, Marcotte, , Schmautz, we had a great team. Only the fans didn' think so and only 9200 poeple showed up for the home opener on Oct 8, 1976. Still upset over Orr leaving for Chicago.and he did leave on his own, the fans stayed away in droves..
      But who would have thought the next three seasons would bring the Bruins within inches of the CUP? All I cared about was REVENGE against the Flyers AND Blackhawks.....................and they delivered in spades

    a 3-0 victory over the Kings.
    When Cheevers revealed he was hurt and we had to again gor with Gilles" JEKYL AND HYDE" "Gilbert I knew we had no chance. AAAH but With a healthy Cheevers, and new weapons,
    Peter McNAB, Stan Jonathan, and Rick Middeton we took care of the Flyes in 77 AND 78

      JAY DAVIDSON yeah Espo I think was leading scorer in 1970 playoffs, but than as you say he did little in playoffs especially in the Finals. Gillie though I think generally played well in playoffs, you can't blame him for loss in this series and remember how well he played vs Canadiens in1979, 50 saves in game 7, a series the B's deserved to win but for stupid too many men on ice penalty. Cheevers got better as he got older although he was always a money goalie. I wonder if sanderson could have made a difference vs Flyers in '74???
