Ryan Sperry in the light novel he's also crying while pulling her by the hair because he's scared of being late.
I heard in the light novel that Hilma tries a few different tactics before the leg snapping, too. I'm just now wrapping up the first novel, but looking forward to the others, especially this story arc. Also, I've seen the light novel art for this scene and thought it was tons darker and creepier seeing the trap drag her away.

i get that maybe he had the simplest job such as retrieval and killing blows.
but characters like shaltear, and enotama just take their time enjoying the spare time such as murdering and eatting their victims.

To be fair Mare would rather be back at home probably asleep, so he tries to finish his missions quickly. Think of it as Ainz giving him homework and he just wants to finish and play videogames.
Mare has -100 sense of justice compared to -500 which is what most of the evil npcs have. It's probably the optimal amount because he has no qualms about being brutal to finish a job but won't go off like a loose cannon.
Sebas gets the job done quickly as well even though he's saving people along the way.
In the LN it was explained that Entoma and her underlings were sorting out the treasure Hilma had in her basement, thats why they took long time.

If there’s anyone I’ve witnessed in Nazarick who truly embodies the view of humans being insects, it’s Mare of all people. The other denizens gleefully degrade beings below them to that level for fun or fanaticism. Mare doesn’t act malicious, yet breaks her leg so badly it bends, and acts genuinely casual about it. This woman hardly seems anymore like a person than an domesticated animal to him and the fact that she could even speak is something he acknowledges because it helps complete his mission.

Well it's SOME explanation.
I'd just like to add that what was said above was confirmed in the light novels. She knew it was a boy based on the large amount of experience she has.
Personal rant: I really didn't feel like reading the light novels, but after convincing myself and finally reading the novel ahead of the anime you start to understand how truly underplayed the anime is. Not for lack of quality on the anime's part or anything, there are just some things that cannot be put into animation, such as character monologues, as that would actually decrease quality.
Also some things that are too... mature, for the anime are cut out. For an example, in this scene, she undresses herself to appeal to Mare (it fails ofc). Also she gets tortured by having cockroaches eat her organs over and over again, as she is constantly healed by magic. I expect this lightening of the mood will be a great bane for the next arc to come, as that arc is going to include some truly... unsettling matters. If you haven't read the novels yet, you really should, at least starting from where the anime ended.

honestly, Mare scares me more than the other guardians. hes not the strongest, and isnt very sadistic in the least, but thats what makes fighting him so bad. he still has his loyalty to nazarick, and he fulfills his tasks with ruthless efficiency. your screwed if you face any of the guardians, but with the others you will at least have some moments to fight and prove your worthlessness, while mare wont give you a moment to prepare.

Mare is the THIRD most powerful. First is Rubedo, second is Shalltear then Mare.
However, in terms of AoE spells, Mare is the most powerful. So you could say technically, in crowd control, Mare can't be beat.

Yeah, that was the Dark Elves' "Greater Dark vision". Hilma should of had a daylight spell or even a torch. However, knowing Mare's level, he would of only squinted and been irritated by her "blinding" him. lol
The glowing eyes is due to dark vision, but it would be a cool detail.
Mare is indeed a trap. With an appearance and demeanor of a small child, he gives the impression of harmless, defenceless and approachable.

'Do not judge by appearance' is the saying that personifies Mare. He is one of the most terrifying monsters in the series.
@bacon froyo Mare is a 70 year old elf boy, more than that he is a lvl 100 guardian of Nazarick and an absurdly powerful magic caster. The scariest thing about Mare isn't his power, it's his utter lack of morality. Mare could wipe out millions and think nothing of it, he isn't concerned with good or evil, he is purely focused on being loyal to Ainz. You could say he represents the worst kind of loyalty, that of blind obedience.
Mare is actually the 2nd strongest guardian.

Mare is the perfect example of 'do not judge by appearance'. He appears to be a girl, young, weak, shy and unconfident. Is actually a boy, 70 years old, one of the most powerful characters in the series, and extremely loyal to his master (Mare is actually one of the most loyal to Ainz and that is saying something in Nazarick).

The anime didnt show what happened to her, so to the ones who are wondering what happened to Hilma: Ainz let their peons torture her while healing her, filling the inside of her body with cockroachs (kyouhukou's family). Maybe they ate her alive from the inside and outside. After that, all the eight fingers became loyal to lord ainz. Now they secretly works for Ainz, working among the humans and being very useful in Re-Estize kingdom. They know that theyre gonna suffer the same torture as before if they dont obey bone daddy. They live thinking about what happened in that moment, and it will never be vanished from their minds, making them feel fear for their entire lifes.

Actually out of the known npcs stats Mare hs the 2nd or 3rd's highest stats since he is tied with Albedo both at 690 i believe and shaltear's at 734 i think. But We do not know Rubedo's stats yet so she may be higher
@@homunculus7 Rubedo's stats are almost certainly higher. She's strong enough that if she were to rebel, even Ainz would have a "low chance" of winning, and Rubedo would flatten pretty much anyone else including Shalltear or Mare. Keep in mind, Rubedo was created using a *World Item* of all things.

The author said in an interview that Ainz is the strongest in nazarick still.....strength is measured in experience,intelligence and ability, not in raw power alone.
The point of why she goes "No-er, Yes I am." Is that in the light novel she is head of the house and one of the fingers but not many know that so at first she was going to say No but in that moment felt a feeling of dread and changed to the truth. She did not know at the time but if she had lied she would be dead very fast. But i have to admit she would later wish for death.
Everyone in nazerik is either a natural disaster, or a Armageddon event, they all are so ridiculously powerful that they could litterally extinct the world and still have power left.

I think that as a caster no matter how strong he is, he still has every caster's weaknesses, like Ains. He'd have a lot of trouble in 1v1 w someone w his same level who specializes in melee combat, like Albedo or Shalltear, or Sebas, etc...
@@MrXav94 No... Mare is surprisingly strong in 1v1. We found out in the later chapter, Mare's melee is stupidly strong in close combat, because the weapon his is holding. He is designed to trick people into meleeing him, because a lot of people believe in the stereotype where the magic caster is weak in Melee.

@@napalm777 Technically they didnt leave it out, just simply omitted a lot of the details and instead just allude to it later after her mind's already been broken. I'm pretty sure I remember in the scene where she brings Mare into the meeting he brings up something along the lines of how she's been wonderfully responsive ever since her insides were eaten out.
Barring entire minor characters being omitted and explanations for why people like Khajit were doing what they were doing before being killed most of the stuff that's simplified at least stays in the story itself albeit in a more implicit form.
Kind of like how a lot of Ainz's more humane moments in horrible circumstances (being actually fairly bothered by Ninya being tortured to death, being jealous that Nferia found it easier to chat with the swords of darkness than he did, seeming to entertain the thought of actually letting the workers he was facing go before their leader angered him by bringing up his friends) are kind of just glossed over with the only display of it being his body language half the time since most of it is described through narration/description and not Ainz's inner thoughts in the books.
I'm pretty sure a certain pancake eating _"Queen of the castle"_ in RWBY would be happy that there's someone who likes to break some legs like her.

At one point she even used it to send the current "MacGuffin" flying straight in the Big Bad's face (with lethal force!)....and then mocked the big Bad about it afterward. :P Was also funny since the party would act shocked any time she *didn't* cast Catapult, sometimes even teasing her by remarking that they thought Catapult was the *only* spell she knew.
And another time she used Catapult to send a drunkard's mini Keg of Ale flying into his face in an effort to make him "sober up". That spell can be really fun(ny) to use. :P

I think the most jarring moments of this anime are when Mare does casual acts of violence without any type of reaction. It is those moments that you realize they really are the bad guys.
Good and bad in this world don't matter. Only strong vs weak.

Thats actually not the case, its just that a level 100 caster is going to of course have stronger strength than anyone below level 50, even if said weakings are complete warriors. Its that way in most RPG's.
But Mare's a druid and his stats are stupidly high. His highest stat is his MP nearly filling the bar, but all of his stats are equally almost there as well.

Sure, but when you've got a character this well rounded who's got that kind of stength? Ainz stength was enough to crush someone so badly they burst their guts out. Mare's stength is at least double that.

Mare is not a full mage. He has only 85 magic attack (lower than Ainz who is said to be a weak offensive caster) but he has 75 physical attack so he can still dish out some pain even if he runs out of mana.
