  • The Cost Of Living tells the story of volunteers in food banks and community centres across Rother Valley, England. Feeling neglected and left behind by the government and facing enormous energy bills, more and more people rely on their community to help put food on their table and provide a warm refuge. Food banks, social cafes and community centres are being stretched to the limit as winter looms large. As the women of Rother Valley try to keep their communities afloat, the government’s inaction stands in stark contrast.

The tax evasion bill is greater than the benefits bill but you choose to adopt the attitude that anyone on benefits is a drain on society. I think you need to stop watching "benefits street" where these TV execs (cunts) want to make an entertainment show that is divisive and meant to cause outrage amongst people like you who don't stop to think that people on benefits might just be there through no fault of their own.       I don't pretend to have all the answers, but my original post, about the water system gets my goat. That money should be reinvested in the infrastructure of this country, oh I don't know, cheap to attend sports centres to keep the nation healthier. Perhaps then our hospitals would be more efficient/cheaper to run.

    It's a disgrace that our government continues to allow energy companies to price gouge in a time of crisis, or at any time. You cannot claim a shortage and energy crisis when making record profits. Rather than using tax payers money to supplement the bills, they should be passing legislation to forbid and fine price gouging. But enough of them have vested interests in those companies so will never pull the trigger. People are going to die, and many more will continue to suffer for their greed and indifference.

    This is the product of 40 years of neoliberalism and "shareholder primacy." Thatcher started the neoliberal ball rolling by slashing taxes on the richest and "shrinking the state" by cutting budgets and stopping social house building, Blair just watched the ball roll and Cameron/Johnson/Truss/Sunak have all sped it up. Shareholder primacy is how every major corporation now functions, meaning that CEOs are doing everything they can to spend as little as possible on staff's wages while buying back their own shares to increase their value and sending as much as possible in dividends to shareholders. It's these ideas that have done the damage to this country (and others) and if they're not rejected and discarded things will continue to get worse.

    I know the whole world is experiencing difficult times, but I cannot believe how bad it is in the great nation of the UK. Average citizens are in the impossible situation of having to chose housing, heating or food.       The elderly and disabled have had to do this for over twenty years, nobody spoke up for them, but people can't believe it that's it's happening on mass now. If a government doesn't care about its elderly, I can assure you it doesn't care about its citizens, and yet, for some reason, people seem to think the same government is going to help them.     Amazing, inspirational volunteers ❤ thank you for all that you do 🙏🙏✅✅👏👏 - you’ve inspired me to give more to food banks although as a donor, I’ve struggled with the high cost of energy bills in the last 6 months - but you’ve inspired me to work harder and have enough to contribute again - so many vulnerable people and families are struggling

    Ban the super rich. Force them to share their money and resources for the good. A handful of these Individuals and corporations are running most of the show. We have to start somewhere, even if it won't be easy. Personal responsibility is of course still essential, too.

    What's weird to me is these Brits don't put plastic on thier windows and hay bails around the Northside of thier homes. Rural America has the same conditions. But we can't count or compete aginst the city's or the federal government. We are a small town. However we did establish a food pantry and our senior center is still good. All self funded.     I fully empathise with the heat or eat statement. However it is very political.
    1. Central gov programs to insulate homes have been available for years. Why haven't the councils done something about it? Why are local councils not getting more flask here?
    Central gov cannot be blamed here, HAs or council housing departments are squarely to blame here.
    Councils have funding pots for capital works (ie. Insulating homes, low energy/carbon heating, even community energy storage )
    This problem is local!
    Get onto your local council, make local changes.
    Educate your neighbours.
    Support local councillors that want to change.
    This message is directed at the a part of the system that has changed, and do support insulation, green homes grants, higher windfall taxes.
    This video should aim at locals, counties, not central!

    We're facing a similar fate here in America. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING has gone up. At very least I have state run programs in place that keep me & my hub fed and help with the gas & electric, but who's to say how much longer that will be able to last?

    Changing workforce due to technology: top paid technical jobs,doesn't benefit human beings, mentally stressful, physically non movement, meaningless to human life, leading many to ill health. work culture is 24/7, reducing hours will enable humans to re-energise with their families, life is dull due to government policy and food marketing adverts. A balance is what is needed. maintaining a family home whilst absent is impossible, maintaining the costs of working is expensive. We've only got so much energy in a day, and we cannot keep it up for the policy makers and businesses who want coverage of 24/7, and yet they no longer plough their profits back into the local communities to benefit all age ranges.
    Technological changes to entertainment: Expensive screen based subscriptions, technology uses more energy, more phsically inactive human engagement", the decline of physical opportunities, to have fun as a human beings free in our local communities, to rewind, relax, re-energise with human to human contact, purely to enjoy life, dancing, acting, music, without an "economic" cost factor built in at every turn, is driving addiction to our screens. We are humans, not statistics, not machines. Lets devolve humans and businesses back to families and community, where more face to face human jobs be encouraged.

    Instead of cooking daily cook every other day and keep a meal for the next day. Heat one room only and stay in that, use electric blankets, wear extra clothes, stay out all day in the warmth like the library.

      If one must choose between food or heat, how will one have the cash required for insulation? One can say that it will pay for itself in the long run, but is one to go without food for months so as to purchase the insulation? Those who haven’t known want fail to understand the economics of poverty. Furthermore, it is costly to be poor because one can’t take advantage of discounts, etc when they become available. I wonder how the peasants would have fared had the king paid only a tenth of the inheritance tax.

I had to do what you said as a child because my house IN LONDON was freezing cold in winter. Only one coal fire in the living room. Gas lighting, no electricity. An outside toilet.
