- Over 2.5" of rain fell in less than 1 hour in the neighborhood, causing Nancy Creek to overflow it's banks and rise to about 1.5' high on Ensign Drive. One car was caught in the flood and Dekalb Fire Rescue came to assist.

We have in our state a "Stupid Motorist Law". You pay for the first responders who have to rescue and recover you if you intentionally drive into a flooded area or other hazardeous environment.

Se tuvo que aprobar esta ley, porque cuando aún no existía esa ley, mucha gente estupida salía a la montaña cuando precisamente, se pronosticaba, frío y copiosas nevadas, y en una de esas ocasiones, el rescate de esas personas estupida, le costó la vida a tres rescatistas, que precisamente fueron a sacar a un grupo de personas, perdidos por la montaña, en pleno Pirineo Catalán Desde entonces, todos los rescates por imprudencia de las personas, van a cuenta del rescatado. Ha sido la única solución, para poner un poco de cordura en personas que solo, miran por pasarlo bien al límite y no piensan en que si las cosas van mal, no es solo su vida la que está en peligro, es también la de las personas que van a rescatarlas. No es broma cada rescate de esta clase le cuesta al rescatado de 8000 a 15000 €. Y parece que tocando el bolsillo de estas personas, se ha podido poner freno a tanta estupidez humana...!!!

All my life I have heard about Nancy Creek flooding. But I have never been able to witness it like this. Thank you for showing this video.
Where are the ditches? I don't one on either side of the road. This is just asking for street flooding.

Years ago working for Burbank, prior to the pump upgrades, Hollywood Way would frequently flood out under Vanowen/Empire. I was part of the emergency crew barricading the street while watching the cops arguing with idiots that insisted they could drive thru. Despite the dude wading down the sidewalk in chest deep water. It's amazing how dense people can be.

Lived on Vanowen in the 90’s. A year or two before the 94 quake, balboa park flooded so bad and so fast that I think someone lost their life there. Sad.
I used to keep my horse at a barn that had Nancy Creek running through the property. Flooding was a regular occurrence. I can’t say I miss it at all!

@@magesalmanac6424 the state it's located in is semi-coastal and gets sudden, heavy rainfall often.
That was like that in Cartersville, GA... I would drive across a small bridge, and I would see horses in the flooded farm field..

After about the 1:20 mark in the video I'd have gone into "turn around, don't drown" mode, like (supposedly) a normal person would do.

Yes. This video illustrated one reason why this might actually be more tricky than I'd have guessed, presumably when the road runs roughly parallel with the creek or waterway. The flood waters first appeared to rise from the left side of the camera view, but shortly afterward the creek apparently overtopped its banks somewhere off-screen to the right. This was when the largest amount of water appeared.
So, that road is IN the creek. Nice plan.

Doesn't look like a proper creek flood. Just, a road flood. Runoff. Take a close look at that drain, bottom left of screen. It's non-operational. When it fills up, you can't see any suction towards it. Stagnant water, like a clogged toilet. Post10's videos have never been so relevant. (He unclogs drains with rakes.)
Slowed down to 0.25 you can see that car had a serious bow wake. It was moving when it hit that water. I think that is what did it in. I don't think the water was deep enough to smother that car going slow.

Most new cars the air intake is in the front fender and is fairly low.
Distributor cap got wet. Happen to me the spark plugs won't spark.

Wow. Really reminds me of the carpenteria California mud slides that dislodged thousands of tons of boulders and killed a bunch of people on the hillsides a few years back. All the rain during that storm also happened in about ten minutes as well. Difference was that b/c of previous fires burning the vegetation on the hillside, there was nothing left to hold the boulders to the mountain. So in that few minutes everything came flooding down.
That was a tragedy, so sad for those families. My husband had a 24-hour tire service truck and was doing some service calls to Ventura, Santa Clarita, and Antelope Valley. Driving through the canyons wasn't easy.

If you look at the timestamp, it was literally about 30 minutes from the car driving into the flooded street to the time they got out and most water already gone.

In Australia we have the saying 'If its flooded forget about it' they use it to warn motorists not to drive through flood waters even if it looks safe.
Most every district has that saying and warning.
In this very state there are several roads next to creeks and rivers. Those prone to flooding often have folding signage that warn high water ahead/ water over road and not to drive. One near me has permanent non folding signs as it happens so often and the road is quite remote.
No matter how many signs, warnings, laws etc.. There's always folks who's cornbread just ain't done in the middle!

I'm from Tahlequah and the Illinois River and Baron Fork overflowing their banks from flash flooding is quite a sight to see, and yeah, flash floods in Oklahoma are definitely something that happen often.

In Austin we have multiple low water crossings and warnings not to drive into those crossings during heavy storms but motorists do it all the time, drive around the barricades and get washed downstream. It puts the first responders lives in danger just saving those idiots who don't listen.
Well that street flooded crazy! A few years ago we too had a huge flood that even flooded the basement. I had to install a sump pump with the new renovation, including a check valve on the main sewer line. I hope I never have water in the basement again. 73

When Nancy Creek floods, it doesn't mess around. Been that way as long as I can remember it, and I'm one of those very rare people who's an Atlanta native.

I remember mom and dad talking about Nancy Creek from when I was younger....they lived near it in the early 60's... It was flooding back then.. they moved to Jonesboro, Ga to get away from the flooding

You can stop the video and see who was on the stretcher. It appears to be one of the first responders, who might have gotten hurt.

There’s a storm drain opposite the camera’s property at the left of this picture that appears to be about 1’x3’, probably large enough for average rainfall but this rain was intense! Either enlarge the drain or install more drainage in that particular area.

My niece lives in an area of Clinton TN that has the same problem. Too little drainage causes flooding there pretty often.
Design worked exactly the way it should. In cases of heavy rainfall past the “100 year storm” roads stop becoming conduits for vehicles and become reservoirs for storm water. Otherwise “enlarging the drain” creates even more dangerous flash flood flood risk downstream.
Sometimes the flood waters come up through those drains...

I’m just wondering what medical emergency occurred to warrant having to get on a gurney and take a trip in an ambulance. That’s a lot of first responders helping when all the person could have done was to wade a few feet out of the slow moving water and been on the grass.
Someone else commented that the first responder had broken his leg while stepping off a retaining wall, presumably in an area where the flood waters obscured his view of the ground.

This video appears to show just a street flood! You can still see a lot of grass behind the street (between the street and the creek) This video shows more about horrible street / sewer maintenance than anything else. In the beginning of this video you can see a drain just to the left of the mailbox - this drain hardly does a thing with the water. The city / county needs to go in and check / clear all these streets / sewer drains.

My family been in Atlanta area since 1700's. I'm 75 & Nancy Creek has been flooding as long as I can remember. Drainage system fills with debris!

It rained a bit, the road got a bit of water on it, a ems vehicle stopped for some reason, the water quickly drained away, and the traffic was back zooming through at 75 to 80 miles an hour in a residential area.

In my town (in Canada, mind you) neighbours or people watching a problem like this happening would just wade in and assist the person, wether it be as simple as pushing the car to lower water or getting them out entirely. It would have never gotten to the point of calling for aid. How many people watched or just walked by before emergency crews showed up?
Not sure. I didn't help because I was out of town that day and found out from the neighbors after.
Flood waters are more dangerous than they appear. It doesn’t take much to sweep a person off their feet.

I had the same question. I was thinking maybe they panicked but it seems odd that they sat in the car even as the water recedes.

The way the road flooded so fast with a simply rain storm appears to indicate another Darwin Award of poor design and run off. Both sides are hills forcing water down to the road and likely the drains underneath were never sufficiently wide enough to cope with the run off for the terrain.
All of those emergency responders who, during a widespread crisis are tied up rescuing someone stupid enough to drive into water with a car that rides low. What a shame.
They were mostly rescuing the first responder who had just suffered a broken leg.
Oh no, not AMR ambulance aka American Medical Response. If they take her to the hospital 3 miles down the road she'll get a transportation bill of like $1,800. My mother got one for 7-8 miles. One of the biggest ripoff health companies in America.
One of my relatives was sick and called me to let me know she was getting an ambulance to take her to the hospital. She wasn't in an emergency state but was on dialysis and needed to go get checked out because of complications. I called Uber who was there in 5 min, took her to the hospital 15 minutes away and cost $10 at most. Her previous bill was about $1500 for an ambulance. It would have taken me over 30 minutes to get to her to drive me herself so this worked well for her.
I'm in socal and it was $1400 for a 1.5 mi to the hospital! Insane.

in driving rain I did not see a river washing over a road a 1000cm deep caused by a new school car park were idiots did the flood and hydraulics calculations. You get a lot of this in Australia
it was deep enough to wash me away and strong enough. I was in a JZA80 supra in a suburb of Brisbane and it was 11:30 pm pitch black with head lights coming towards me so why think I'm driving into my death? The head lights were of a person who had just pulled off a U-turn and do you think they flashed or stuck around? A holes! I cam to a stop 50 m into a 100m flow, I lowered my drivers side window to be met by splashing water into my face, at the same time the water pressure was turning my car to face its flow. I had driven this road home a thousand time and never ever seen water even over the road but I knew this was as real as its ever going to get. Water was racing up and over my windscreen and roof at speeds that escape out the window was futile. Like in the movies I thought "Game over" But to this day I do not understand the 2 j engine was still running . I dropped the clutch and gave her every thing and she tried to go into the torrent and I felt her being pushed down from the flood water, then like the shark out of Jaws she launched up out of the waters into the air landing on the centre Island and I floored it to high ground. If I can tell you one thing its that I am alive because of Toyota . Thank you.

In this video they show how to hydro lock your motor. Lol once water makes it to the air intake the filter isn't stopping it the water goes thur the intake pipe past the filter right into the intake manifold to the top of the piston. Then the pistons that can't take the pressure from all the water being forced in break and get jammed in a way that the motor locks up. Which could have been avoided by not driving thur high water in a little car.

I live in the desert & we're not built for rain. Every few years we flood pretty bad in the lower sections of town. It's not unusual to see a section of road with a dozen vehicles, cars trucks & motorcycles. We don't bother with the vehicles, just pull the people out & let 'em walk home
Drives into flooded roadway like they are certain it is only 3” deep, hauls butt, soaks airfilter with wake and stalls car. Proceeds to sit in stalled car for long time as 3” of water only gets deeper. But i guess we had the luxury of knowing it wasnt very deep as we watched it flood.
